JOHN LAKE PASSES AWAY - MUCH LOVED PETOSKEY WOMAN SUCCUMBS LATE ON WEDNESDAY P.M. Was Active In Church And Lodge Circles, Clubs and Social Life of City - Mrs. John A, Lake, one of Petoskey's best known and best liked women, died at about 5:30 o'clock last evening, following several years' illness from heart trouble. Mrs. Lake last winter had a long, serious illness, but recovered sufficiently to be up and about and less than a week ago was able to be down town and visit with friends. Last Friday she developed an attack of sore throat and was taken to Lockwood hospital. She became noticeably worse yesterday and passed peacefully away. Members of the family surviving are the husband, one of the city's well known businessmen; three sons, Kenneth E. Lake, in business here with his father; Raymond J. Lake, student at Ferris Institute; Gordon Lake, student at the local high school; and two daughters, Gladys B. Lake, teacher in the schools at Muskegon Heights, and Mrs. Margurite Howell, of Petoskey. Mrs. Lake was active for many years in church and lodge circles, in the Forthrightly club and in all charity work about the city and region. She made a great host or friend, for to know her was to love her. She was a life member of the Methodist church, first becoming affiliated with that church at St. Johns and later transferring her membership to Petoskey. She was worthy high priestess of Queen Esther Shrine, W. S. of J., of this city, two terms, and member and held several offices in Beulah Chapter, Order Eastern Star, resigning her post because of continued ill health. She filled every office in the Fortnightly club of this city and was a member of and active worker in the Co-Workers Class of the Methodist Sunday-school. Mrs. Lake was born September 17, 1876, at St. Johns, Michigan, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Miles Boardman. She was educated in the schools of that city and for one year taught school in that section. She was married to John Lake, October 3, 1900, at St. Johns. From there they moved to Cheboygan county where Mrs. Lake taught school. They moved to Petoskey in the spring of 1901 when Mr. Lake entered business. The funeral service is to be held at 10 o'clock Saturday morning, from the First Methodist church, with the pastor, Rev. A. H. Pellowe, in charge. Burial will be in Greenwood. The bearers will be Alden J. Faunce and Eder C. Matthews of Harbor Springs; and Lewis A. Smith, Ralph Stormer, William E. Ellis, and Norman W. Wells of Petoskey."
