She was the Daughter of Arthur and Clara Paul Rock. She was the youngest of 10 children. Her six older sisters were Clara Mae Anti of Tucson, Arizona, Gladys Woodcock of Boynton Beach, Florida, Doris Grace Weddle of Craning, Arkansas, Anna Cass of Binghamton, New York, Olive Fiddler of Southwick, Massachusetts, and Grace Rush of Sedalia, Missouri . She had three brothers: Charles Rock of Port Chester, New York, Edmond Rock of Rye, New York, and George Rock of Buzzards Bay, Massachusetts. In 1952 she married John W. Fleming a navy veteran aboard the USS Johnston D.D. 821 and lived for awhile near Columbus, Ohio. After several years in Ohio she filed for divorce and returned to Fall River, Massachusetts. The marriage produced two children: Kathleen F. Fleming (husband Kelly Wernette) and Wayne Fleming (wife Cindy). She has several grandchildren. Her grandchildren are Laura Wernette and Shawn Wernette of Jackson, Michigan, and Jennifer Fleming of Fall River, Massachusetts. Her youngest great grandchild is Kasey Ann Chambers of Jackson County Michigan (Age 5), Daughter of and Laura Warren of Jackson Michigan. Josephine was a nurse’s aide for Charlton Memorial Hospital and then a hospital transporter; where she was well known as the” singing transporter”. Previously, she had worked for Chase Curtain for about 14 years. While at Chase she was a member of the bowling team. She was remarkably good dancer who loved to go out and kick up her heals. Roller skating was one of her hobbies and she continued to skate well into her sixties. She was a member of the North Main Senior Center and the Woman’s Guild for St. Mathews Church. She loved visiting the Cape Cod and the rocky shore line of New Port Rhode Island. She took several trips to Michigan to visit her daughter Kathy Wernette, her husband Kelly, and grand children Shawn and Laura Wernette. While in Michigan she enjoyed the scenic wonders of Lake Michigan, Huron, and Erie. She delivered loads of fun in the summers of 1990 when she visited Michigan and inherited the nick name “Josephine the jellybean” by her grandkids. She was a well known walker and it was sometimes very difficult to maintain her pace as she speed around the sidewalks of Fall River, Newport, or Cape Cod. She walked to work almost every day for years just for the exercise. She loved to visit her sister Olive who lived in the mountains near Southwick, Massachusetts. Olive and Norm Fiddler visited the Fleming family in Fall River and were very close to Josephine. Josephine spent many of her senior years living with her son Wayne Fleming and family in Fall River. She will be dearly missed by her family and special friends Jacqueline Goyette, Ethel Charente, Lana Moniz, and Theresa Moniz. Additional Comments: May 12, 2003 (Letter received from Josephine Fleming regarding family history) “Kelly, I was the baby of a large family so I only know so much. I should have done this when Gladys and others were still alive.” Josephine Fleming Dear Kelly and Kathy Glad to hear from you and get the pictures of Laura and family—She sure looks happy and they seem to be enjoying their lives. I see Shawn is doing well and enjoying his music. This is all I know about John’s (former husband) father was Charles Fleming or Ours?? Charles Fleming’s wife Minnie Ours Fleming divorced Charles and remarried a man named James Trader. Their daughters names are Kathleen Coursing who is married to Leonard Coursing and they lived in East Liverpool, Ohio, and had 3 children: 1 boy and 2 girls. Another daughter named Josephine married and lives in Columbus, Ohio. His third daughter Wanda Hendrix (married name) and lived in Racine, Ohio. Last I heard from her was about 1978-1980. My husband John W. Fleming was in the Navy and in 1952 was on the USS Johnston D.D 821. When I was there we rarely talked about family and I was only there one and one half years. Don’t have much more news and I am so glad you are all doing so good---I hope you all enjoy yourselves. Write soon. P.S. I have enclosed some other information about the Rock Family….my side. Love Mom Arthur Rock was my father. Clara Paul Rock was my mother. Arthur had three sons: Charles, Edmond, and George. He had 7 daughters: Clara Mae, Gladys, Grace, Olive, Anna, Doris, and Josie. Arthur Rock had a brother who lived in Rhode Island named George. He only came to our house a couple of times when I was young. Clara Paul Rock had a sister Lena Mozilla. Lena had a daughter named Jenny Sears who lives in the Plymouth, Massachusetts area. Look her up. She also had a brother Billy??and another sister Anna Oldham. Anna had three girls: Dorothy, Anna, and Beryl. I think all 3 girls have died. Gladys Rock married Henry Woodcock and both lived in Fall River until they moved to Boynton Beach, Florida when he retired. They had 3 children: Irene, Shirley and Bud. Irene lives in Rhode Island somewhere. I think her last name was Sears. Shirley married Robert Haworth—he lived in Fall River and after they were married they moved to Portsmouth, Rhode Island. Bud moved to Arizona and was a Policeman there until he died. Kelly….I was the baby of a large family. So I only know so much. I should have done this years ago when Gladys and others were still alive. Clara Mae rock married Roldo Anti. His parents came from Italy. They now live in Arizona for about the last 20 years. Daughters: Margaret married Leo McLaughlin. They had daughters Irene…still lives in Plymouth. Also a son Bud who died on Nov 25 2002. Wife Jean died June 15, 2001. They had two sons: Bud and Wayne. Charles Rock married girl named Josephine. She live in Port Chester, New York, so you can find her name there—they had two sons but I don’t know their names or much about them. I only remember seeing them as a child. Edmond Rock married Antoinette Lalla and they lived in Rye, New York until they retired and moved to Florida. They had two daughters: Clara and Patty Lalla. The Lalla family lived in Porchester all their lives…so family census will be there. She had one sister Gertrude and 3 brothers and the only one I knew was her brother Peter. George Rock married and moved to Buzzards Bay, Massachusetts where he died. Grace Rock married John Rush and moved to Sedalia, Missouri. They had two children: Lena Mae and Kenneth. Lena Mae still lives in Missouri and married a man named Jackson. Don’t know about children?? Kenneth moved away but should be in the census for Missouri. Doris Rock married Dean Weddle from Craning, Arkansas. They had two sons and one daughter. Dean was one of the sons and they had a daughter named Audrey. Both sons became doctors. Her daughter lives near her know in Lompoc, California. Her daughter has three children but I do not know there names. Anna Rock married Raymond Cass and got a divorce. She had a son and a daughter and lived in Binghamton, New York. I think she moved but I am not aware of her new residence. All this folks should appear in the Plymouth, Massachusetts census. I hope this help a bit on your genealogy search. Love Joe. The following is a transcription of a hand written letter sent to me by Josephine Fleming to help with some genealogical work I was doing. I have left it pretty much the way she wrote it except for spelling changes and grammar. I thought this information might be useful for future generations of genealogists.
