V'S ARCHIBALD VAN DYKE (8 OCT 1870 - 4 MAY 1937) At Northville, near Albany, New York, on October 8, 1870, life began for Archie VanDyke, only child of Joseph and Carrie VanDyke. Three years later his father died, and his mother returned to her former home near Portland, Michigan. There, an dat Muir nearby, they lived together for nearly 10 years. When Archie was about 14 years old, his mother was married to Lyman Moore, of Portland. For the first time he was in a home with brothers and sisters: John, a half brother, and Edith, a step sister. Here he spent his teens and some of the years following, sturing up happy memories which he never forgot. He was 21 years old when he took the first of three trips to Montana, spending in all about five years there. On returning from the west, in the spring of '98, he went at once to meet Mina Crowel, whom he had known since a visit to Woodland years before. A few days later, on April 23, they were married. The next month they set up their first home in Billings, Gladwin county. The years that followed were difficult ones. They had settled in a new country and it was hard to make a living. Three children came, Leland, Ruth and Joseph, who helped to give significance to the struggle. Good neighbors lived near who always helped, and so the years passed. From Billings the family moved to Lansing, where they stayed four years, and then to Beaverton near which they have lived near since. Known familiarly as Archie to friends and neighbors wherever he has lived, he has always valued highly the human relationships of life. His first thoughts were for his family, but his interest never stopped within the small circle of his blood relation. He tried to be a good neighbor, and he appreciated the good neighborliness of others. He was happy to be able to served the community in school and township offices, which he filled continuously for more than 25 years. A member, first of the Baptist church and then of the Church of the Brethren, his ideas in religion were simple and practical. He believed in living, according to the knowledge he had, in loving his fellowmen sincerely, and in doing his share of the world's work. The rest he left to God. He died May 4. The loss of a husband and father and relative is shared by Mina VanDyke, wife, and children, Mr. and Mrs. Leland VanDyke, Mr. and Mrs. Lavon Killian and Joseph VanDyke, all of Beaverton, as well as by four grandchildren and many other relatives. Those attending the funeral from out of town were: Mr. and Mrs. John Moore of Detroit, Mr. an Mrs. Ernest Moore of Eaton Rapids, Mrs. Fred Towner of Portland, Mr. and Mrs. John Crowel of Midland, Mr. and Mrs. Jud Phillips of Vermontville, Mrs. Welcome Snyder of Flint, Mr. and Mrs. Clint Henry of Freeport and Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Winey of Lake Odessa. Whitmer, of Beaverton; two brothers, Edgar and John of Midland; and two sisters, Ethel of Beaverton and Martha Farrell of Woodland; besides other relatives and a host of friends. At the age of 14 he made the great choice of accepting Jesus as his Savior. Although he was in the prime of life and had prospective years before him, the all-wise Father said: "It is enough; you have played your part in the drama of life; come home". He was a kind and loving companion, a patient and youthful father and a careful and frank advisor; to know him was to love him. One less at home! The charmed circle broken; a dear face. Missed day by day from its accustomed place; But, cleansed and saved and perfected by grace, One more in Heaven! One more in Heaven! Another thought to brighten cloudy days; Another theme for thankfulness and praise; Another link on high our souls to raise, To home and Heaven. YAGER (20 DEC 1910 - 11 FEB 1951) BEAVERTON MAN DIED AFTER FRACAS FUNERAL SERVICES WILL BE HELD THURSDAY AFTERNOON Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock for Fay A. Yager, 40, of Beaverton, who died Sunday at the Midland hospital. Yager was admitted to the hospital Saturday afternoon, nearly 18 hours after being involved in an altercation Friday evening on a Beaverton street. Prosecutor Cyrus Y. Atlee said that according to statements made by witnesses, Yager engaged in a prolonged argument at a Beaverton tavern with Archie Fackler, 43, of Gladwin. Fackler, a member of Boman's Tavern shuffle-board team, had gone to Beaverton to play a match with the Beaverton team. Yager was not a member of the Beaverton team but joined the group as an onlooker. Witnesses told officers that during the verbal exchange, about a seat at a table, Yager invited Fackler outside to settle te matter. During the brief fight in which blows were struck, Yager fell and struck his head on the icy sidewalk, losing consciousness. Only a few persons were aware that the argument had been carried on outside the tavern. He was taken to his home Friday night, but was removed to the hospital when he failed to regain his senses. Report of an autopsy conducted by Dr. L. J. Kassa, of Midland, revealed that Yager's death was caused, by intra-cranial hemorrhages on both sides of the head, and a skull fracture on the left side of the head. Mr. AtLee said this morning that any coroner's inquest must be held in Midland county by Midland authorities because the death occurred there. AtLee also stated that Fackler was not being held and that evidence, revealed so far, does not warrant the placing of charges by authorities. Sheriff Arthur Kelly, Mr. AtLee and Coroner A. H. Bradley, of Midland, have been cooperating in the investigation of the matter. Mr. Yager was born in December 20, 1910 in Cadillac, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Yager, and was a resident of Gladwin County about 30 years. On May 6, 1941 he married Miss Helen Ruth Searfoss, of Gladwin. He was a veteran of World War II, serving nearly two years overseas in the European theater, and a member of the VFW post. He was engaged in the contracting business in Beaverton with his father and brothers. Mr. Yager will be at the home of his parents until the time of the service at 2 o'clock on Thursday afternoon.
