James Wade Bergman apparently was instantly killed when he was hit by the car driven by Richard G. Grams, 75, of Saginaw, Sheriff Victor Edick said. Young Bergman is the son of Mrs. Belva Bergman, of Beaverton. He was on his way to his home south of town on the bike borrowed from a neighborhood chum. Grams told the sheriff that the boy veered towards the middle of the highway into the car's path as he prepared to pass the bicycle. Both vehicles were traveling southward. Although Grams pulled to the left in an effort to avoid the collision, the right front fender of his car struck the bicycle and the boy was thrown into the windshield. The bicycle was in the center of the west lane when it was struck, Sheriff Edick said. James Wade was born on May 20, 1948, in Gladwin, and had lived his lifetime in Gladwin County. Survivors include his mother, Mrs. Belva Bergman; a brother, Peter William, at home; his grandfather, Lawrence Bergman, of Beaverton; and grandmother, Mrs. Violet Hammerbacker, of Saginaw. His father, David, preceded him in death in 1956. Funeral services were held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the Dale Methodist Church. The Rev. Gordon Showers officiated and burial was in the Dale Cemetery.
