He was born March 6, 1920 in Beaverton, MI the son of Ora and Marie (Andrist) Cochrane. Vernon entered the U.S. Naval Reserve in 1942 and earned his commission in 1944. He served as a pilot and navigator flying B-24 bombers in the American and Asiatic-Pacific theaters until his discharge in 1946. On June 1, 1946 he married Donna Marie Fox of Flint, MI and they resided in the Flint area until their move to Saline in 1965. He was a life long self employed residential contractor in the Flint and Ann Arbor areas. He was also an active member of York Baptist Church of Milan. He was a member of the Saline American Legion Post #422. Survivors in addition to his wife of 55 years, Donna, include two sons, Dale (Susan) and Derek (Elizabeth) Cochrane all of Tecumseh; daughter Jan (Gerald) Austin of Saline and daughter-in-law, Connie Greene of Pinckney. Dear to his heart are ten grandchildren, Sheila (Mike) Frasier, James (Esther) Austin, Timothy (Renee) Austin, Steven (Shannon) Cochrane, Kristen (Douglas) Cundiff, Kari Austin, Stephanie, Jacquie, John and David Cochrane; two great- grandchildren, Jonah Austin and Madison Frasier. Also surviving are, one brother, Dean (Wanetta) Cochrane of Beaverton, MI; brother-in-law, Adam Dziadosz of Midland, MI and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Waldo; two sisters, Nola Dow and Imogene Dziadosz. Funeral services were held Thursday, May 2, 2002 at 11 a.m. at the Robison- Bahnmiller Funeral Home in Saline with Rev. David J. Grinnell officiating. In order to invest in youth, memorial contributions may be made to the AWANA Clubs of York Baptist Church of Milan or Bethel Baptists Church of Britton. Envelopes are available at the funeral home. Military graveside services were held in Beaverton Cemetery, Beaverton, MI on Friday, May 3, under the direction of the Gladwin County VFW Post #7303.
