Cowell Lempke, 69, of Auburn, passed away Friday morning, December 10, in the University Hospital, Ann Arbor, following a short illness. Mrs. Lempke, the former Miss Mamie Mercer, was born September 9, 1896, at Clio. She came to Gladwin County with her parents as a child. She was married to Perry Cowell December 22, 1912. They spent most of their married life near Beaverton, moving to Clare in 1956. Mr. Cowell passed away June 7, 1961, and she was married to Ed Lempke of Auburn July 7, 1962. The Lempkes spent their winters at Mt. Dora, Fla. She was a member of the Auburn Baptist Church. Mrs. Lempke wrote the Knoxville items for the Gladwin County Record for many years, and when in Florida she wrote the items about Gladwin County folks who were spending the winter there. She leaves her husband, Ed Lempke; one daughter, Mrs. Charles (Wilma) Schreiber of Freeland; two grandchildren and one great grandchid; two sisters, Mrs. Frank (Jessie) Turner of Midland and Mrs. Robert M. (Isabella) Brown of Beaverton. Funeral services were held Sunday at 3:00 p.m. at the Auburn Baptist Church with the pastor, the Rev. M. D. Wolff, officiating. A memorial service was held Monday at 2:00 p.m. at the Beaverton Church of the Brethren with the Rev. Randall Roose officiating. Burial was made in the Dale cemetery.
