Fred E. Downing, 73, of 311 West Brown St., Beaverton, died Saturday, Sept. 1, 
at his home after a short illness. Born in Sullivan County, Mo., on October 
31, 1905, he came to Gladwin County in 1945 from Lansing. Mr. Downing worked 
for W. H. Hall and Son Lumber Co. in Beaverton and was a member and past 
member of the Beaverton Masonic Lodge No. 453. He was married to Julia 
Hitchcock on July 22, 1929, in Bowlling Green, Ohio.
   Besides his wife, he is survived by one son, Richard of Beaverton; 3 
daughters, Mrs. Maynard (Jean) Hughes of Midland, Mrs. Junior (DeeDee) Grove 
and Mrs. Brian (Debbie) Genaw of Beaverton; 2 brothers, Wayne and Mike Downing 
of Miland, Mo.; 3 sisters, Mrs. Grace Hardinger and Mrs. Hazel Hope of Green 
City, Mo. and Mrs. Lula Cornmesser of Waterloo, Iowa; 17 grandchildren and 3 
great grandchildren.
   Services were held Tuesday at 2 p.m. from the Hall Funeral Home, Beaverton 
Chapel. Burial was in the Dale Cemetery. A Masonic Service was held Monday at 
8 p.m.
