Downing, 85, of Beaverton, died Friday, Jan. 26, 1996 at home following a long illness. Born March 2, 1910 in Gratiot County, she resided in Beaverton for the past 40 years. Mrs. Downing was a member of the Beaverton Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star No. 386 and the Grace Bible Church in Beaverton. The former Julia Hitchcock married Fred E. Downing July 22, 1929 in Bowling Green, Ohio. He preceded her in death Sept. 1, 1979. Surviving are 3 daughters, Nora Jean Hughes, Bonita and husband William Gedney, and Debra and husband Brian Genaw, all of Beaverton; one son, Richard and wife Bonnetta of Beaverton; 2 brothers, Carl and Mike Hitchcock, both of Beaverton; 2 sisters, Clara Lane and Velma Hall, both of St. Louis; 19 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Rites were held at 1 p.m. Monday from the Hall Funeral Home, Beaverton chapel. Pastor Jim Walters officiated and burial was in the Dale Cemetery, Tobacco Township. A special memorial service by the Order of the Eastern Star was held Sunday evening. Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorials to Grace Bible Church in Beaverton.
