Richard Joseph Engle, son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Doyle, of 2674 Parkway, Gladwin, had been throwing stones out onto the ice when he apparently slipped off the bank into about four or five feet of open water, investigating sheriff's officers said. He was visiting his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Gaines, caretaker of Chappel Dam, at the time of the mishap. Gaines recovered Richard's body and gave artifical respiration. Two Gladwin firemen, Jack Mawhorter and Henry Ziemer, were summoned with a resusitator, but efforts to revive the youngster failed. Richard was born in Wayne on Dec. 31, 1962. He had lived in Gladwin with his parents for three months. Besides his parents and grandparents, he is survived by a brother, Thomas III, at home. Services were held Tuesday at 2 p.m. from the Hall Funeral Home. The Rev. Randall Roose officiated and burial was in Dale Cemetery.
