Comrade David Sherman Fairchild was born at Greenfield Center, Huron county, Ohio, Jan. 8, 1844. He enlisted in the Civil war, in Co. K., Thirty-eight, Ohio Volunteer Infantry, Sept. 10, 1861, at the age of 17 years and 8 months, and was honorably discharged May 9, 1862, by reason of a surgeon's certificate of disability. Prompted by patriotism and devotion to his country he re-enlisted in 1863 and served his county as a faithful soldier until the close of the war, having given his services and offered his life to his country for two years and eight months. He was a member of athe Baxter G.A.R. post at Lyons, Ohio, until 1884, and after coming to Gladwin he joined Noble post G.A.R. There Comrade Fairchild was a long sufferer from rheumatism caused by exposure while in the service. He went with his family to Charlevoix several years ago and made his home there until July 8 when he answered the last roll call, at the age of 72 years, six months. He was brought to Beaverton for burial at his former home.
