Born in Beaverton, Jan. 20, 1912, she had spent her lifetime in the county. Mrs. Fortner was a graduate of Central Michigan University. She retired after teaching 32 years in the Gladwin, Beaverton, Farwell and Sanford-Meridan schools. She was a member of the Gladwin United Methodist Church. The former Mary Paxton, she was married to Joseph Fortner, Aug. 10, 1940, in Gladwin. Besides her husband, she is survived by one son, Dennis of Flint; one daughter, Jane Baumann of Remus; 3 brothers, Doyle of Gladwin, C.D. (Dee) and C.W. (Dub) of Denver, Colo.; 4 sisters, Doris Kigar and Viola Lennon of Gladwin, Zella Alerander of Davison and Mildred Knight of Flint; 6 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by 4 brothers and 2 sisters. Services were held today, Wednesday, at 11 a.m. from the Hall Funeral Home, Gladwin Chapel. The Rev. Joel Hurley officiated and burial was in the Beaverton Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the United Methodist Church.
