Dale, Dec. 2.---Another pioneer has passed away. Mrs. Mary Freeman (nee Smith) 
died Nov. 22, 1912, at her home near Dale. She was born in Canada in 1844, was 
united in marriage to George Freeman and with him in the year 1878 moved to 
Tobacco township, Gladwin county, where she since resided until death called 
her. At the time they came here there were only two families in this part of 
the county, they being James Dow's and Charles Robinson's. 
   This country was a dense forest with no roads nor bridges, only trails. 
After about eight years her husband died, and she was left with a family of 
small children to support. She never became discouraged but braved the 
hardships of a life in a rew country, and made a home for her dear ones. 
   She had always experienced unusual good health until about two years ago 
when she became afflicated with cancer of the breast. Everything was done to 
effect a cure but this seemed impossible. She suffered untold agony for a long 
while before her death, but bore it all so patiently, always being so kind, 
and trying to avoid being any burden to those caring for her. 
   She leaves to mourn the loss, an aged mother, Mrs. Smith of Genesee, a 
brother, Peter Smith of Genesee, one daughter, Mrs. Jane Wagoner of Dale, five 
sons, George, Eugene, and Garfield of Dale and Lee and Solon of Strong, Mich., 
and a host of friends. The funeral was held at Dale hall Sunday, Nov. 24, Rev. 
Turner officiaiting. Interment in Dale cemetery.
