He was born in Beaverton on Aprinl 10, 1916 to Lawrence and Clara (McKimmy) Hughes. He married Edith "Deanie" Thomas on Jan. 26, 1946 in Tobacco Township. They were married 59 years. He retired i n1975 after 36 years as a foreman at Dow Chemical in Midland. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII. He was a lifetime resident of Gladwin County, and a life member of V.F.W. 7303. He was a charter member of American Legion Post 171, and a member of the Coleman-Beaverton Masonic Lodge, serving as Past Worthy Master and Secretary. He helped organize the Gladwin County Veterans Affairs Office and operated it from 1970 to 1991, and enjoyed working with the veterans. Surviving are his wife, Edith Hughes of Beaverton; one daughter, Randa Hughes of East Lansing; one son, Robert Hughes, Jr. and fiancee Lisa Yairger of Beaverton; five brothers, John (Lillian) Hughes of Gaylord, Pete Hughes of Gladwin, Gerald Hughes of Goodrich, Maynard (Alicia) Hughes of Midland, and James (Margaret) Hughes of Lansing; one sister, Harriet (Gus) Thurston-Balluff of Livonia; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by one daughter, Janet Hansen; one grandson, Robert Bodnar; and one brother Lawrence Hughes, Jr. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on April 28 at Hall Funeral Home in Beaverton. Pastor Michael Wise will officiate. Visitation will be April 27 from 2-9 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will take place at Tobacco Townhip (Dale) Cemetery in Beaverton. At 7 p.m. on Wednesday there wil be special service by the Masonic Lodge, Gladwin County V.F.W. Post 7303, and American Legion Post 171. Memorial contributions may be made to Gladwin County V.F.W. 7303, American Cancer, or Seventh Day Adventist Church in Edenville.
