Knox, surveyor and engineer who for almost 50 years has been in the county's employ. Rev. Raymond Norton conducted the services at the M.E. church in Beaverton. Burial was in the Dale cemetery. Born in Liverpool, England, on February 2, 1846, Mr. Knox passed his 89th birthday this year. He had been active in the office of county road engineer up until a few weeks ago, and was one of the county's pioneers whose memory will be cherished by hundreds of friends throughout the county. Credited with the surveying of every drain and almost every road in the county, he served as county surveyor for 42 years - from 1889 to 1931. Previous to 1889 he served as deputy surveyor under George W. Doane. When he retired from office in 1931 he was succeeded by his son, V. V. Knox. He cam to this country form England in 1883 and first settled in Detroit. He moved to Gladwin after a few months and here on February 22, 1885, he was married to Mrs. Julia Dow - the couple celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary this year. Acting as pall-bearers at his funeral today were road commissioners and county officers with whom he has worked during his many terms in office: L.M. Barnes, Earl Woodruff, Lyman Kerswill, Reas P. Webb, Walter Thomson and John C. Shaffer. Surviving him are his wife, Mrs. Julia Knox , his son, Vallie Knox, and a daughter, Mrs Ed Ray. Gladwin County Record dated 04-17/1935 Column - 6 Page - 1 JOHN KNOX John Marwood Knox was born in Liverpool, England, February 2, 1846. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Walton college at Liverpool, and also the degree of civil engineer. He then worked in a bank for three years. In the summer of 1881 he sailed for Montreal, Canada, where he lived for one year. In 1882 he came to Detroit and in 1884 he moved to Gladwin county. On February 28, 1885, he was united in marriage to Mrs. Julia Dow. They settled on the farm which is now known as the Knox farm, east of Beaverton. To them was born one sone, Vallie Knox, of Beaverton. There were also three step-children, Mrs. Eliza Dundas, who died six years ago, Mrs. John Rich, of Beaverton, and Jay Dow, of Toledo, Ohio. Two foster children were taken into the home and became as daughters. They are Mrs. Ed Ray of Gladwin and Mrs. Chester Buck of Stanton. There remain 18 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren. Mr. Knox is best known as a pioneer of Gladwin county, where he has used his education and talents freely. During the nineties he worked six years as bookkeeper in the saw mills of Beaverton. He then became county surveyor, which position he has held most of the time since then. Men like him have given to America more than we shall ever know.
