Mapes, 85, of Eugene, Oregon passed away June 18, 2003 at his home. He was born March 18, 1918 to John and Erma (Clark) Mapes in Mills Township, and worked as an analytical chemist for Dow Chemical in Midland for 37 years until his retirement in 1975. The World War II Army veteran lived in Oregon for two years, having previously resided in Beaverton. He married the former Lucille Stear on Sept. 3, 1943 in Midland; she preceded him in death in 1996. Mr. Mapes was a member of Gideons, Grace Bible Church in Midland, the Farm Bureau, and the Gladwin County Fair Board from 1976-1994. He was a past president of the Beaverton School Board, and a former member of the Tobacco Township Board from 1953-1960 and the Gladwin County Board of Commissioners from 1968-1980, including Board Chairman from 1970-1980. He was on the Central Michigan Health Board from 1972-1980, as well as a member of the Gladwin County Planning Commission, East Central Michigan Advisory Board, the Chippewa Nature Center and V.F.W. Post 7303. He is survived by sons James (Cindy) Mapes of Kalamazoo and Timothy (Diana) Mapes of Big Rapids; daughter Annmarie (Jon) Brittan of Eugene, Oregon; and 11 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by his parents and a son, Dale Mapes. Funeral services were held on Sunday, June 22 at 1 p.m. at Hall Funeral Home in Gladwin with burial in Tobacco Township (Dale) Cemetery in Beaverton. Graveside service included military honors performed by V.F.W. Post 7303. Visitation was held Saturday, June 21. Memorial contributions may be made to Gideons or Dale United Methodist Church.
