Born in Straznice, Czechosicvakia, Aug. 21, 1914, she came to the United States in 1930. She lived in Dearborn from 1930 to 1989 when she moved to Gladwin County. Mrs. Max was a maid supervisor for the Holiday Inn in Dearborn from 1964 to 1971. She was a member of St. Phillips Catholic Church in Coleman. The former Mary Smazenka, she was married to Sylvester Max on Feb. 16, 1935, in Detroit. Besides her husband, she is survived by 4 sons, Robert and Leonard of Dearborn Heights, Arthur of Porther, Calif, and Richard of Beaverton; one daughter, Mrs. John (Judith) Klimkiewicz of Beaverton; one sister, Rose Wolfe of Utica; 17 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Ronald in 1983 and a daughter, Loretta Max in 1939. Rites were held Monday at 11 a.m. from St. Phillip Neri Catholic Church. The Rev. Father James Heller officiated and burial was in the Beaverton Cemetery. A Christian Wake Service was held Sunday at 7 p.m. at the Hall Funeral Home, Beaverton Chapel. Memorials may be made to the Michigan Chapter of the Arthritis Foundation.
