His mother, Mrs. Evelyn McMahon, is in critical condition at the Midland hospital with a fractured skull and serious chest injuries. She has not regained consciousness since the accident. Leo McMahon, 20, driver of the car and a brother of James, suffered a broken left arm and head lacerations. Midland city police, who investigated, said the McMahon car was traveling west on US-10 returning from Bay City. The second car involved, driven by Thomas Conroy, 23, of Mt. Pleasant, was traveling south on Eastman road. The Conroy car ran a red light, officers said, and crashed into the side of the McMahon car. Both cars were demolished. Conroy was not injured, but his companion, William Mullett, 26, of Shepherd, was treated for a lacerated forehead and releashed. Conroy was arrested and was to be arraigned on a negligent homicide charge. James was hurled from the car, in which he was riding, to the pavement and died instantly of a fractured skull, internal injuries and broken limbs. The family was returning from a wedding in Bay City, relatives said. James McMahon was born in San Antonio, Texas, Feb. 8, 1940, and returned to Gladwin county as an infant. His father, George, died in 1941. Survivors are his mother and brother. He was a seventh grade student in the Hay school and his classmates are to act as pallbearers. Services are to be held this afternoon at the Hall Funeral Home at 2 p.m. The officiating clergy-men are Rev. Henry Kreulen, of Bay City, and the Rev. Ernest Jehnsen, of the Beaverton Church of the Brethren. Burial will be made in the Dale cemetery.
