CLIFFORD PAYNE

   Clifford C. Payne, 73, of 4765 Beaverton Rd., Beaverton, died suddenly 
Friday, Dec. 23, in the Gladwin Area Hospital. Born in Lenawee County, Aug. 3, 
1915, he moved to Gladwin County in 1948 from Sand Lake. Mr. Payne was a lab 
technician for Dow Chemical Co. for 26 years and retired in 1979. He was a 
graduate of Deerfield High School and Michigan State University. Mr. Payne 
served in the Army during World War II and was a veterinary technician in the 
Asiatic-Pacific Theater. He was a member of the Beaverton United Methodist 
Church, a past member of the Beaverton School Board and was on the planning 
committee for Mid-Michigan Community College. Mr. Payne and the former Eunice 
(Winn) McLaren were married Nov. 7, 1953, in Beaverton.
   Besides his wife, he is survived by 2 daughters, Mrs. Bryan (Cheryl) Hamel 
of Fairbault, Minn. and Mrs. David (Pamela) Nix of Beaverton; 4 step-sons, 
John McLaren of Orchard Lake, James McLaren of Beaverton, Dan McLaren of 
Nevada and Bill McLaren of Kansas; one brother, Arlo of Marion; 2 sisters, 
Mrs. Bernice DeWitt of Delta, Ohio and Mrs. Leoma Rickord of Farmington Hills; 
and 10 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Carol Ann, Dec. 
8, 1955 and a brother, Elmer.
   Services were held Monday at 1 p.m. from the Beaverton United Methodist 
Church. The Rev. Janet Larner officiated and burial was in the Beaverton 
Cemetery. Arrangements were in charge of the Hall Funeral Home.
