The family soon moved to Poland where Joe attended school. As a young man, Joe returned to America and settled in the Detroit area where he graduated from the Ford Motor Company Trade School for Tool and Die. He specialized in precision grinding and continued to work for Ford until enlisting in the U.S. Army, March 26, 1942. While traveling by bus to Detroit, Joe met Emma Irene Edwards, who was moving from her home in Sylvia, Tenn. to Detroit in search of work. Poor health caused Joe’s military discharge Aug. 8, 1943, and on Oct. 30, 1943, he and Irene were married in Detroit. They established a home in Highland Park and were blessed with six children, Glen who died in infancy, Richard, Fred, Mark, and twin daughters, Arlene and Darlene. Joe eventually left Ford and worked for 22 years at the McPherson Broach & Machine Company in Detroit and later at Warren, retiring in February 1973. Joe and Irene moved to an apartment in Roseville, later to a home in Beaverton, and in 1996 when Irene’s health began to fail, moved back to a Roseville apartment. Joe became seriously ill in August 1999 and in October moved to the Manor of Malvern Care Center in Malvern, Iowa. Joe and Irene had been married for 56 years when Joe died Friday, Nov. 19, 1999 at the Jennie Edmundson Hospital in Council Bluffs, Iowa. He had attained the age of 88 years, 9 months, and 12 days. He was preceded in death by his parents; infant son Glen; and brothers Henry, John, Adolph, and Bernard. Joe is survived by his wife Irene of Malvern, Iowa; sons Richard and wife Virginia, and Mark, all of Ferndale, Rev. Fred and wife Pam of Malvern, Iowa; two daughters, Arlene and husband Ken Willoughby of Holly, and Darlene McClelland of Warren; 16 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and two great- great-grandchildren; one brother, Frank of Florida; and one sister, Stella of Poland. Services will be held at 11 a.m. tomorrow (Wednesday) at the Hall Funeral Home, Gladwin, with Rev. Fred Pilecki officiating. Burial will be in Billings Township cemetery in Beaverton.
