Rau, 71, of Wooden Shoe Village, died suddenly Friday, Dec. 22, in the Gladwin Area Hospital. Born in Continental, Ohio, on March 23, 1901, he came to Gladwin County in 1912. Mr. Rau farmed in Tobacco and Buckeye Townships until retiring in 1963. He was re-elected as county commissioner from District 1 in the November election. Mr. Rau served as a Federal Land Bank director from 1946 to 1968 and was a member of the Farm Bureau and was first Farm Bureau insurance representive for Gladwin County. He was also a member of the Hay Senior Citizens Club and the Beaverton Church of The Brethren. Mr. Rau and the former Nellie Rupp were married on Oct. 11, 1930, in Beaverton. Besides his wife, he is survived by one son, Jerry of Sanford; one daughter, Mrs. Winifred Dugan of Beaverton; five sisters, Mrs. Grace Ward and Miss Elma Rau of Beaverton, Mrs. Vida Arnold of Lakeland, Fla., Mrs. Faye Landphierd of Midladn, and Mrs. Pearl Ward of Coleman; one brother, George of Gladwin; and six grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, James, on Sept. 8, 1969, and a sister, Mrs. Mary Carpenter in 1968. Services were held Sunday, Dec. 24, at 2 p.m. from the Beaverton Church of The Brethren. the Rev. Henry List officiated and burial was in the Dale Cemetery.
