Reader Sr., 66, well-known Beaverton resident, died Monday, Sept. 1, in the Midland Hospital following a long illness. Born in Scottville on Feb. 16, 1903, he came to Gladwin in 1937 from Detroit and opened a dry goods store. In 1939, Mr. Reader bought a restaurant and gas station in Beaverton which he operated until about 1947, when he purchased a hotel in Gagetown. After operating the hotel for about two years he and his family returned to Beaverton. From about 1952 until he was elected to County Drain Commissioner in 1956, Mr. Reader operated a used furniture store. Mr. Reader held the office of drain commissioner until he retired in January 1965. He also held the post of secretary-treasurer of the Michigan Association of County Drain Commissioners for several years and upon retirement was awarded a life membership in the organization. He was a charter member of the Gladwin Rotary Club and also served as justice of the peace in Beaverton for many years. Mr. Reader and the former Vera Zander were married on Sept. 7, 1937. Besides his wife, he is survived by two sons, Talcott of Gladwin and Robert of Beaverton; and six grandchildren. Services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. from the Hall Funeral Home. The Rev. A. H. Keesler will officiate and burial will be in the Beaverton Cemetery.
