The Wentworths had gone away for the evening, leaving Barbara Jean and an infant child in the care of the hired girl. When filling the lamp about 8 o'clock fuel had apparently leaked out and later caused the explosion. When the lamp exploded, spraying the room with burning oil, the girl grabbed the baby and ran out of the house. The six year-old Barbara Jean, she said, was following her. But Barbara Jean either became dazed in the smoke, or else ran back into the house, for her body was found inside when flames had finally consumed the building. Brief services were first held at Ray Wentworth's near Dale, before burial in the Dale cemetery.
