He graduated from Beaverton High School in 1941, and has been in service for the past three years, he went overseas last fall. His wife and daughter make their home in Flint. Gladwin County Record dated 04-18/1945 Col-6 Page-1 KILLED IN ACTION Mr. and Mrs. James Winn, 2nd, of Beaverton township, received word Tuesday, April 17, that their only son, Pfc. James S. Winn, 3rd, had been killed Saturday, April 7, in action in Germany. He was born October 10, 1921, in Billings township. He moved with his parents to Beaverton township and attended the Beaverton schools, graduating in 1941. Jime tried to enlist in the Air Corps soon after graduating but did not pass the physical examination. While employed in Flint, he was drafted and entered service August 16, 1942. He was placed in the Infantry and trainde at Ft. F. E. Warren, Wyoming; Ft. Crook, Nebraska; and Camp Perry, Ohio. He had been promoted to a Corporal when he became ill and was sent to Percy Jones Hospital in Battle Creek where he was a patient for about seven months. His company was sent to Fort Chaffee, Arkansas while he was transferred to the Air Corps and sent to Golfport Field., Arkansas, where he again became a Private. From her he went to Moore Field, Mission, Texas and later to Xavier Universit in Cincinnati, Ohio. While he was here the Government closed the University and he was moved to Camp Breckenridge., Kentucky from where he went overseas about October 15, 1944. He married Miss Rheta North, of Flint, July 2, 1944, who lives at 621, West Court, Flint. Surviving him besides his wife and parents, are four sisters, Mrs. Eunice Winn McLarin, of Beaverton, Stella Jane, Donnabelle and Hazelann, all at home and one nephew, Johnnie McLarin. His grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. James Winn and Mr. and Mrs. Aaron Graves, live near Beaverton. The Winn's have a son-in-law, Pfc. John McLarin, who is stationed in Germany. Gladwin County Record dated 04-25/1945 Column - 8 Page - 1 RITES SUNDAY FOR PFC. WINN Reburial services for Pfc. James S. Winn III, son of Mrs. Hazel Winn and the late James Winn, II, of Beaverton, will be held at the Beaverton Methodist church on Sunday afternoon, April 24, at 2 o'clock. The Rev. Roy Munger and Rev. Charles Kleinhardt will officiate. Burial services in the Beaverton cemetery will be under the auspices of the American Legion Manley Morris Post. Pfc. Winn was born in Billings township on October 10, 1921, moving with his parents to Beaverton township as a child. He attended the Beaverton schools and graduated with the class of 1941. He went overseas in October, 1944, after seven months illness and a transfer to the Air Corps. He was killed in action in Germany on April 7, 1945. Surviving are his mother, Mrs. Hazel Winn, of Beaverton; four sisters, Mrs. Eunice McLaren, Mrs. Stella Jane Munger, both of Beaverton, and Donnabelle and Hazelann at home; also both of his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Aaron Graves and Mr. and Mrs. James M. Winn, all residing in Beaverton. His father passed away on December 19, 1946.
