KENNEDY DIES AT HOME Former City Manage Succumbs Today After Long Illness J. S. Kennedy, 74 died this morning at 9:45 at his home, 110 West Gogebic street. Mr. Kennedy has been in poor health in recent years and had been critically ill during the last year. Funeral arrangements have not been completed. Mr. Kennedy was born on June 21, 1867 in Nebraska City, Neb., and came to Ironwood in the spring of 1894 to become manager of the water works here. He acquired ownership of the water system and sold out late in the 1890’s, returning to Nebraska City about 1898. He was in the Klondike during the gold rush and came back to Ironwood in the early 1900’s. Mr. Kennedy became interested in mining and was made manager of the Plummer mine, located between Pence and Montreal, a position which he held for six or seven years. During the World War he was named food administrator for the Upper Peninsula and following the war he became deputy collector of internal revenue for the Upper Peninsula. After leaving that position he became connected with the Detroit Trust Co., an investment house, where he remained for several years. He then became poor commissioner for the city of Ironwood and on February 2, 1936, he was named city manager. He was succeeded by W. W. Woodward in December, 1936. Since that time Mr. Kennedy has been retired. The deceased is survived by his wife, Julia; three sons, Karstens of Bismarck, Neb., Robert D. of Superior and James S. Jr. of Duluth; and two sisters, Mrs. George O. Mayer and Neil Kennedy, both of Nebraska City.
