Maxwell had died the night before at a hotel in that city through an overdose of morphine. The man was registered at the Inter-Ocean Hotel as George R. Maxwell, of Mexico, and from papers found in his satchel it seemed he was a civil engineer. There was an envelope post-marked Washington, and addressed to George R. Maxwell, No. 143 East Eighteenth street, New York. On the bottom of the valise was a fresh custom-house label from the custom-house at Suspension bridge, N.Y. No papers, letters, or other means of identification were found among his belongings. He wore a Knights Templar button and on his finger was a Masonic ring. A dispatch from Mr. Maxwell's father who lives in Ishpeming confirmed the belief that the dead man was "our George" and many expressions of regret were heard from those who knew him during his residence in Bessemer. From the wording of the dispatches from the west it was at first believed that Mr. Maxwell had committed suicide, but it transpires that he was in the habit at times of using morphine to ? relief from cramps to which he was subject. The fact that the means of identifications were so limited lends some show of closing suicide. Mr. Maxwell was a resident of Bessemer for several years and was during a portion of that time one of the publishers of the Gogebic Iron Spirit. "The remains have been sent from the west to Ishpeming for burial.
