Born April 26, 1915, in Detroit, he was the son of Joseph and Margaret (Fox) Wicksall. On Sept. 27, 1947, in Elk Rapids, he married the former Zetta B. Slater. Bill lived in the Traverse City area since 1924. He and his brother Jack established Wicksall Distributing in 1949; Bill retired in 1981. He was a graduate of Traverse City Central High School in 1933. During the '30s and '40s he played hockey and his favorite position was goaltender. During World War II, he served with the U.S. Navy Amphibious forces in the Pacific theater. His wife, family and church were his true passions in life. A member of St. Patrick Catholic Church and formerly St. Francis Catholic Church, he was actively involved with both parishes. He built the Altar, Tables, Lectern and Priest's chair for St. Patrick Church. He enjoyed furniture design and construction, general yard and garden work and trout fishing. He was an avid grouse and woodcock hunter all of his life and breeder of the Wicksall line of English Setters. Bill was a member of the VFW, American Legion, Elks and Eagles. Survivors include his children, Timothy (Marti) Wicksall of Kingsley and children Adam, Nicholas, Ian and great-grand son, Jacob; Suzette (Bob) Hoxie of Traverse City and children Vera, Molly and great-grandson Jacob; Sally (Dave) Downer of Traverse City and children Jud and Abe; Patrick (Jean) Wicksall of Leelanau County and children Michelle and Rachel; Bridget (Frank) Williams of Traverse City and son Kamron; Peter (Cindy) Wicksall of Traverse City and children Hollie, Loren, Kenton; a very special friend June Wright of Harbor Springs; also several special nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Zetta (Slater) Wicksall; and brother, Jack Wicksall. Visitation will be at St. Patrick Catholic Church on Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. and a rosary will be held at 7 p.m. A Mass of Christian burial will be at the church on Monday at 11 a.m. with Rev. Father Gerald Micketti, Rev. Father William Lipscomb, Rev. Father Francis Murphy and Rev. Father Pat Barrett serving as co-celebrants. Burial will be in Barnum Cemetery, Mayfield Township. In remembrance, memorial contributions may be directed to Munson Hospice or Munson Home Care. The family is served by the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home.
