DeLorme b. 1 Sept. 1943 or 1944 d. 20 Apr. 1953 ------------------------------------------------- TRAVERSE CITY RECORD EAGLE - 21 Apr. 1953 - Page 1 Railroad Crossing Claims Another Life - Karlin Boy the Victim - A grade crossing accident, the third to be recorded in this vicinity in less than a month took the life of nine year old Charles Raymond DeLorme of Karlin Monday evening when the car in which he was riding with his parents and brother was struck by a southbound Chesapeake and Ohio passenger train at Interlochen, 14 miles south west of this city. His death brought to four the number of lives lost in train car crashes in the region since March 31. The youngster, who received multiple skull fractures when he was thrown from the car to the road was dead on arrival at Munson hospital. His parents, Joseph A. and Ella A. DeLorme and brother Robert were bruised and shaken up. State Police who investigated stated that the DeLorme family was traveling north on M-137 at the Interlochen crossing. The father saw the train approaching and applied his brakes officers said and then at the last minute attempted to cross ahead of the diesel locomotive. The engine struck the car at the right rear wheel and spun it around the right rear door flying open and throwing Charles to the road. Homer VenHuizen of Grand Rapids was the engineer and Leon Wilsey also of Grand Rapids was the conductor. Dr. Richard L. Thirlby coroner was called to the scene. Charles was born in Detroit on September 1, 1944. He resided in Karlin with his parents and brother and was a fourth grade pupil at Interlochen school. He is survived by his parents and brother, his maternal grand parents, Mr. and Mrs. Perry Ramsay, his paternal grandparents Mr. and Mrs. Joseph L. DeLorme, and aunts and uncles, Mr. and Mrs. Ivan Schworm, Mr. and Mrs. Albert DeLorme, Mr. and Mrs. Charles DeLorme, Mr. and Mrs. William DeLorme, Mr. and Mrs. Julius DeLorme and Mr. and Mrs. George DeLorme. Funeral services will be held Thursday morning at 9:00 o’clock from St. Joseph Catholic church in Karlin with Rev. Dunphy officiating and burial will be made in the family lot in Karlin cemetery. The Rosary will be recited Wednesday at 8:00 p.m. At the Martinson funeral home in this city with Rev.
