Canfield b. 20 Jan. 1932 d. 5 Sep. 2003 SGT US ARMY KOREA Married May 1967 ELLIE (ELEANOR TILTON) CANFIELD b. 1938 --------------------------------------- TRAVERSE CITY - Jack James Canfield, 71, of Traverse City, died Friday evening, Sept. 5, 2003, at Munson Medical Center following a long and courageous battle with cancer. Born Jan. 20, 1932, in Flint, he was the son of the late Fred and Rosaline (Schmuckal) Canfield. On May 26, 1967, in Traverse City, he married Eleanor J. "Ellie" Tilton. He served with the United States Army as a paratrooper during the Korean conflict. Jack was the elected sheriff of Grand Traverse County for 12 years and employed by the Grand Traverse County Sheriff's Office for 35 years before his retirement. He was a member of the Grand Traverse Lake Sports Fishing Association, American Military League, Sheriff's Association, Fraternal Order of Police, and a life member of Cherryland VFW Post 2780 and the American Legion. Jack enjoyed hunting and fishing and excelled as a wild game chef. He cherished the time he spent with his family. In his retirement years, Jack loved fishing trips with his grandchildren, traveling and entertaining family and friends in Bokeelia, Fla. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Sept. 10, at St. Francis Catholic Church, with the Rev. James Gardiner serving as celebrant. Visitation will be at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home on Tuesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m., with a scripture service at 7:30 p.m. Burial will be in Linwood Cemetery, Long Lake Township, with full military honors under the auspices of Cherryland VFW Post 2780. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the Boys & Girls Club of Grand Traverse, 517 Wellington, Traverse City, MI 49686.
