      JACK E. HAMMOND, 72, of Traverse City, died Thursday morning at his home.
      Arrangements are pending and will be announced by the Traverse City 
Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes.

      TRAVERSE CITY - Jack Elery Hammond, 72, died Sept. 27, 2001, at home, in 
the house that his great-grandfather, Nelson Hammond, built in 1859. Jack had 
been a resident of Traverse City for the past 54 years.
      Jack was born on June 17, 1929, in Flint, the son of Floyd Elery and 
Revella M. (Campbell) Hammond. On Nov. 24, 1949, in Long Lake Township, he 
married the former Janette Marie Ritola.
      Jack worked as a salesman for various automotive warehouses. He enjoyed 
hunting, NASCAR racing, golfing, traveling, and camping with his family. He was 
a member of Eagles Aerie # 3701 of Newberry.
      Jack is survived by his wife, Janette Hammond of Traverse City; two 
daughters, Lynn Marie (Jeff Ameluxen) Larson, and Susan Revella Hammond; two 
sons, Chris Elery (Judy) Hammond, and Michael William (Vicki) Hammond, all of 
Traverse City; six grandchildren, Melissa Hammond, Rebecca Hammond, Keith 
Hammond, Krista Hammond, Jill (Robert) Daly, and Larry Larson; five great-
grandchildren, Addison Hammond, Sierra Daly, Liam Daly, Brenna Daly, and Peyton 
Daly; one brother, Finley G. Hammond of Arizona; mother-in-law, Marie Ritola, 
two sisters-in-law, Joyce Pickard and Ricarda (John) Flees, all of Traverse 
City; three brothers-in-law, Terry (Gert) Ritola of Traverse City, John 
(Maureen) Ritola of California, and Jack (Arlene) Hahnenberg of Traverse City; 
two cousins, Joan (Earl) Moss of Marion, and Richard (Lila) Campbell of 
Traverse City; and one aunt, Dorothy Cooper of Traverse City.
      Jack was preceded in death by his infant son, Gregg Allen Hammond; 
mother, father; father-in-law, William Ritola; sister-in-law, Barbara 
Hahnenberg; and aunt, Mildreth Hammond.
      A Memorial Celebration of Life service will take place at 1:30 p.m. on 
Saturday, Oct. 6, at the Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes, with 
visitation one hour prior to the service. Rev. Louis Grettenberger will 
officiate. Interment will be in Linwood Cemetery, Long Lake Township.
      Memorial Contributions may be directed to Family Intentions. 
      Arrangements have been entrusted to the Traverse City Chapel of Covell 
Funeral Homes.
