Hoffman, 77, died Saturday at Munson Medical Center. Born Oct. 9, 1921, in Vincennes, Ind., he was the son of Maurice and Marie (Laube) Hoffman. On April 17, 1968, in Detroit, he married Mildred Austin. A resident of the Long Lake Township and Traverse City area for the last one-and-a-half years, he was previously a resident of the Novi area. James had worked at American Natural Gas as an accountant and manager of employee benefits. He enjoyed classical music, gardening, his computer, traveling and spending time with his grandchildren. Survivors include his wife; three children, Joann (Dan) Wendels of Traverse City, Karen (Barry) Casler of Lansing, and Colleen (Kelly) Kroupa of Cedar; eight brothers and sisters, Catherine Stoelting of Vincennes, Robert (Rosamond) Hoffman of Indiana, Donald (Betty) Hoffman of Indiana, Sister Rita of Kentucky, Helen (Clarence) Deem of Indiana, Alfred (Jean) Hoffman of Indiana, Barbara Dodd of Indiana, and Rosemary Wendling of Virginia; and two grandchildren. James was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Maurice and Charles; and a sister, Mildren Williams. Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Immaculate Conception Church in Traverse City; the Rev. Father James Hayden will serve as celebrant. Burial will be in Linwood Cemetery in Long Lake Township. Memorials may be directed to the Interlochen Arts Academy & Music Camp. ---------------------------------------------- Mildred M. Hoffman Died August 4, 2000 TRAVERSE CITY - Mildred M. Hoffman, 71, of Traverse City, died Friday at Bortz Health Care of Traverse City. Born May 3, 1929, in Detroit, she was the daughter of Vern and Helen (Bergin) Austin. On April 17, 1968, in Detroit, she married James E. Hoffman. Mildred had made her home in Novi prior to moving to Traverse City three years ago. She was a member of Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church in Northville, where she also was employed as the religious education secretary prior to her retirement. Survivors include three daughters, Joann (Dan) Wendels of Traverse City, Karen (Barry) Casler of Lansing and Colleen (Kelly) Kroupa of Cedar; seven grandchildren; and her brothers and sister, Ralph Austin of Garden City, Margaret (William) Albrecht of Dearborn and Robert (Nancy) Austin of West Bloomfield. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Bruce Humphrey in 1964 and by her second husband, James, in 1999. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday at Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church, 770 Thayer Blvd., Northville with the Rev. Father Ernest Porcari serving as celebrant. Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Linwood Cemetery in Long Lake Township, Traverse City. Memorial contributions may be directed to Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church.
