Visitation will be 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 10, at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City. Services will be held Monday afternoon. A full obituary will appear in Sunday's Record-Eagle. --------------------------------------------- Harry Porter Knowles Died September 8, 2000 TRAVERSE CITY - Harry Porter Knowles, 89, of Traverse City, died Friday at the French Manor. Born Sept. 4, 1911, in Huntsville, Kan., he was the son of Harry Piddock and Eleanor Malinda (Porter) Knowles. Porter was a sergeant in the U.S. Army during World War II serving in the Pacific Theatre. He was a member of the Traverse City VFW Post No. 2780, a charter member of the BPO Elks No. 2672 in Florida, Traverse City Chamber of Commerce, Kiwanis and Masons. He enjoyed fishing, and in his childhood hunting. Mr Knowles is survived by his wife, Gladys Johnson of Traverse City; daughter, Margaret Anne "Sue" Chapman of Charlevoix; sons, David George (Wendy Jo) Knowles of Denver and Jon Blair (Deb) Knowles of Traverse City; grandchildren, Amy Sattory, Eric Peplinski and Blaire Knowles; two sisters, Martha Currey of Missouri and Harriet Gaeddert of Kansas; stepchildren, Beverly (Ed) Merchant of Traverse City, Faye (Bernie) Johnson of Florida and Clayton (Ginny) Johnson of Traverse City; and many step-grandchildren and step-great- grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Margaret Louise Grieshaber; brother, James W. Knowles; grandson, Spencer Knowles; and son-in-law, Lou Chapman. Visitation will be 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. today at Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City. Services will be held at noon Monday at the funeral home with the Rev. C. Jay Koehler officiating. Burial will be at Linwood Cemetery in Long Lake Township. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Cancer Society or the Diabetes Association.
