"Sonny" Lardie, 78, of Lady Lake, Fla., and a lifelong resident of Traverse City, died Sunday, March 2, 2003, at home after a courageous battle with cancer. Born Jan. 30, 1925, in Traverse City, he was the son of Roland and Florence (Jensen) Lardie. On June 21, 1973, in Traverse City, he married the former Joan Watson Anderson, who survives. Sonny attended the Traverse City Public School system and served his country honorably with the U.S. Navy Seabees during World War II. He trained in Virginia and went to Iceland, Ireland, England, France, California, Okinawa, Guam from 1943 to 1946. Sonny was a life member of the Cherryland VFW Post 2780, and the Elks Lodge #2793. He had been employed as a truck driver for Chef Pierre, retiring in 1986. He raced stock cars in his early years with his brother, Bob, enjoyed playing basketball and was an avid pool player. Sonny later enjoyed playing golf with his friends and his wife. He and Joan spent many winters in Florida, finally moving there permanently. Sonny was a loving father to all of his seven children and will be greatly missed. Along with his wife, Joan, Sonny is also survived by his two sons, Larry Lardie of California and Lorin (Cathy) Lardie of Marquette; two daughters, Lynda (John) Walker of Idaho and Lucinda Lardie of Traverse City; their mother, Dorothy Lundberg Lardie of Traverse City; one brother, Robert Lardie of Wisconsin; three stepchildren, Andrea Anderson of Traverse City, David Anderson of Florida and Carol (Andy) Hufnagel of Massachusetts; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Shirley Lardie Attebury; and a granddaughter. Cremation has taken place and services will be announced at a later date. Memorial contributions may be directed to Munson Hospice or the American Cancer Society, 525 W. 14th St., Traverse City, MI 49684.
