TRAVERSE CITY — Ford Freeman Meteer, 91, of Traverse City, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 20, 2006, at Cherry Hill Haven. He was born on Oct. 12, 1914, in Maple City, to Ralph and Myrtle (Freeman) Meteer. Some of his favorite memories from his childhood were of riding horses and helping his father train horses on the family farm. After graduating from high school, Ford served for two years in the CCC at Camp Cusino in the Upper Peninsula, building roads and driving trucks and machinery. He also worked at the State Hospital Barns, milking cows three times per day. He married Alma (Whitehill) on April 27, 1940, who preceded him in death on July 12, 2001, after 61 years of marriage. Ford served in the Army in World War II from March 1944 through February 1946. He served with the Armored Infantry Battalion (Hell on Wheels) and the Victory Division. He earned three Bronze Stars, a Victory Medal, Combat Infantryman Badge, Good Conduct Medal and the Rifle Sharpshooter Medal. After returning from the Army in 1946, Ford and Alma farmed in Benzie County for many years; much of the time using his dearly loved work horses, Duke and Dan, to do the farm work. During this time he also worked with the Conservation Department building fishing sites at lakes such as Davis, Armstrong and Herendene, and planting pine tree plantations. He also delivered bread for Michigan Bakery, worked at Matelski's Sawmill and Red Mill Lumber Company. In 1965 they moved to the Traverse City area, where Ford was a mail carrier until his retirement in 1982. Ford had a wonderful sense of humor, and on all of his routes he always had a smile and a joke, or a story to tell along the way. After retirement, he continued to enjoy taking care of his cows and his farm. During his illness, he kept that wonderful ability to tell a story or crack a joke and make people laugh to the very end. He is survived by his sons, Neil Meteer of Lake Ann and Scott (Kim) Meteer of Traverse City; sister, Vera Jordan of Traverse City; brother, Glenn (Shirley) Meteer of Maple City; niece, Joanie (Art) Hansen of Traverse City; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and many nephews and nieces. Besides his wife, Alma, he was preceded in death by an infant brother, Eugene Meteer; his parents; two infant daughters and one infant son; daughter, Anita Meteer; brother, Vern Meteer; sisters, Reva Kologe and Gayle Chrestensen. Funeral services will be held Saturday, Sept. 23, at 3 p.m., at the Reynolds- Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City, where visitation will take place one hour prior to the service. Memorials may be contributed to the charity of your choice. The family is being served by the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home; www.reynolds- jonkhoff.com. Published in the Record-Eagle on 9/22/2006.
