'Marty' Selby Died January 11, 2003 TRAVERSE CITY - Martin R. "Marty" Selby, 58, of Traverse City, drowned Saturday morning while ice fishing on Long Lake. Born Nov. 19, 1944, in Bad Axe, he was the son of C. Clark and Elfrida (Luecke) Selby. On Feb. 24, 1968, in St. Clair, he married the former Marilyn A. Gille, who survives. Marty had been a resident of the Traverse City area since 1983. A longtime health insurance agent, he was most recently employed as an insurance agent with Matrix Group Financial Services in Traverse City. An avid outdoor enthusiast, Marty's interests included fishing, hunting and skiing. He was a member of The Great Outdoors and the Pro Ski Instructors of America. Marty was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church, where he was very actively involved. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather and brother, and will be greatly missed by his family and many friends. Along with his wife, Marilyn, Marty is also survived by his two sons, Ryan (Niki) Selby and Justin Selby, and two grandchildren, Claire and Ellen Selby, all of Traverse City; brother, Scheel (Brenda) Selby of Moorehead City, N.C.; sister, Madeline (David) Landmann of Cumberland Foreside, Maine; stepbrothers, Charles (Rogna) Gauger and Bill (Mary Ann) Gauger, all of Ft. Myers, Fla.; and stepsister, Carol (James) Phillips of San Diego, Calif. Marty was preceded in death by his parents. Friends may call at St. Patrick Catholic Church today, Tuesday, Jan. 14, from 4 to 8 p.m., where a Scripture service will be held at 7 p.m. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at the church on Wednesday, Jan. 15, at 2 p.m., with visitation one hour prior to the service. The Rev. Albin Gietzen will be serving as celebrant. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Grand Traverse County Sheriff's Department or to St. Patrick Catholic Church.
