He enlisted in Company S, Michigan 5th Cavalry Regiment on 05 Sep 1862. Mustered out on 15 May 1863 at Fairfax Court House, VA. Ancestry family tree records show he was the son of Joseph Henry Canfield and Mariette Root. He was born October 2, 1835 in Auburn Center, Geauga Co., Ohio and passed away in 1873 in Gratiot Co., MI. He married Elvira C on Feb 6, 1857 in Ann Arbor, Washtenaw Co., MI. They were the parents of Lelia Nell, Edwin J., Arthur H., and Daisy C. Canfield.
