BETTS (JOSIAH8, JOSIAH7, MATTHEW6, THOMAS5, THOMAS4, JOHN3, ALEXANDER2 BETTES, ROBERT1) was born March 11, 1812 in Nassau, Rensselaer Co., New York, and died April 28, 1909 in Reading, Hillsdale Co., Michigan. He married (1) EDDIE E. "EDALIZA" WEAVER2, daughter of JUSTUS WEAVER and ELIZABETH. She was born April 12, 1812 in Warners, Onondaga Co., New York3, and died January 1835. He married (2) MARY JANE HOPKINSON November 16, 1838 in Palmyra, Wayne Co., New York5. She was born January 18, 1814 in Palmyra, Wayne Co., New York6, and died February 06, 1898 in Hillsdale Co., Michigan6. Notes for SETH F. BETTS: OBITUARY: (The Reading Hustler, Wednesday, April 28, 1909) LIVED ALMOST A CENTURY. UNCLE SETH BETTS, PROBABLY OLDEST MAN IN THE COUNTY, DIED EARLY THIS MORNING. Seth Betts died early this morning at the home of his daughter, Mrs. J. W. Niblack, north Main street, at the age of 97 years, 1 month and 17 days, his affliction being la grippe. He had been in declining health the past winter, but prior to that he had enjoyed remarkably good health all his life and was a wonderfully active and well preserved old man. He was born near Albany, N.Y., and that state was his home for 65 years, he having moved to Michigan 82 years ago. his wife died eleven years ago after a married life of over 60 years. Eight children were born to them, of whom one son and two daughters survive. Mr. Betts was a life-long democrat, having cast his first vote for Andrew Jackson in 1832, and he had voted at every presidential election but one since then. Funeral services will be held at the Niblack home Friday at 10 o'clock and the remains taken to Cambria for burial. More About SETH F. BETTS: Burial: Old Cambria Cemetery, Cambria, Michigan Notes for EDDIE E. "EDALIZA" WEAVER: The old "Weston-Betts" Bible which I've viewed also lists Seth Betts first wife, Eddy E. Weaver, born April 1812, died Jan. 1835, aged 25 years. I believe I have her lineage. We know Seth Betts lived in Van Buren Twp., Onondaga Co., New York before moving to Hillsdale Co., Michigan. Seth's parents are buried in Van Buren Twp., Onondaga Co., New York. We know from the bible "Eddy E. Weaver" was born in April 1812 and died January 1835. Another fact is we know is that Seth and Eddie's daughter was named "Eliza Eddie". Now onto the connection ... The IGI Fische and "The Weaver Genealogy" by Lucius Weaver (1928) lists a "Edaliza" being born on April 25, 1812 to Justus Weaver in Onondaga County, New York. "Eddy Eliza" and "Edaliza" are almost identical and the birth date of April 1812 matches. Her daughter was also named very close to "Edaliza"... "Eliza Eddie". I think the final connection is that "The Weaver Genealogy" shows Edaliza's brother Warren moving to Reading, Hillsdale Co., Michigan. We know that Seth Betts also took his family to Hillsdale Co., Michigan. Warren and Seth were of like age, obviously friends, in fact they were brother-in-laws, and likely made the move to Hillsdale Co., Michigan from Onondaga Co., New York together sometime after Edaliza's death. Notes for MARY JANE HOPKINSON: OBITUARY: (The Reading Hustler) Mary Jane Hopkinson was born at Palmyra, Wayne Co., New York, Jan. 18, 1814, and died Feb. 6, 1898, aged 84 years, 19 days. She was married to Seth F. Betts Nov. 16, 1838, and united with the M.E. church in 1843 at Palmyra. She leaves and aged husband and five children in great sorrow, but their consolation is that the beautiful life here is continued in the world beyond. Tow children have gone before, and infant son, June 8, 1844, and a beloved daughter, Mrs. B.B. Odell, of Baldwinsville, N.Y., June 22, 1890. Mrs. Heman Weston, of Cambria, Mich., Sherman Betts, of Edgewood, Gratiot county, Mich., Mrs. J.W. Niblack, of Reading, Mich., Mrs. Charles Gilbert, of Chicago, Ill., and Mrs. Frank P. Blankenberg, of Syracuse, N.Y. remain. The many friends who will mourn her loss show the love they bore her. Many times in her last days, she spoke of them in loving kindness, recalling the pleasant years spent among them. They came to Michigan, March 1877, since then their home has been at Cambria village, loved and honored by all. The last three weeks of her life was spent at her daughter's , Mrs. J.W. Niblack's, Reading, where whe was watched with tender and loving care. Husband and children stood by her as she neared the river and watched her cross to the rest that is promised to the faithful. More About ELIZA EDDIE BETTS: Burial: Old Cambria Cemetery Notes for HEMAN ELIJAH WESTON: OBITUARY: (The Reading Hustler) A strange fatality occurred at Cambria last Wednesday in the death of Mr. and Mrs. Heman Weston, who died five hours apart, both of typhoid fever. They had but recently returned from Saginaw, where they assisted in the care of a daughter and her husband, both of whom were sick with the same disease. Mr. and Mrs. Weston were among the pioneer residents of Cambria and were highly respected. A double funeral was held Saturday and the remains laid to rest in the same grave. Mr. Weston was 77 years of age and Mrs. Weston 68. The latter was a daughter of Seth Betts and a half-sister of Mrs. J. W. Niblack and Mrs. Chas. Gilbert, all of Reading. Personal Notes of Eddie Weston Barber: Heman Elijah Weston was married to Eliza Eddie Betts in New York January 1, 1856, coming to Cambria, Michigan in 1858. They settled on a good farm of 70 acres building a large barn, later buying 20 acres of his father's farm -- a fine orchard on both places plus other fruit was plentiful. Later selling this farm to buy another farm of 87 acres. This farm had larger buildings with plenty of fruit, living there till his health failed. The only son, Frank, was left on the farm while the father and mother moved to Cambria, where they lived until their death on October 28, 1903.
