MARRIAGE- At Hancock Congregational church last Thursday- Wm H. HARRIS of Hancock and Miss Maggie, daughter of Mr and Mrs James ROSS of Hancock. 1883 January 18-PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN NEWS ITEM- Last Saturday morning, Ephraim ANDERSON, a Norwegian, employed at filling cars at the Osceola mine, had his hand severely injured and three fingers had to be amputated. DIED- Last Saturday evening, an in mate of the poor farm, John MALONE, committed suicide by hanging himself with a piece of cord. 1883 February 1 - PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN DIED- William LANG, at one time employ ed by the Calumet and Hecla mining company, but who has lived for a while in New Mexico, was shot and killed by a man appointed to take his place. He had refused to surrender his position even though his boss told him his services were no longer required. The remains were brought to Hancock and burial will be on Thursday in Hancock. MARRIED- 1883 January 27 At the Catholic Church, Houghton, Mr. Joseph WISSING of Ontonagon, Ontonagon County and Miss Kate CAREY of Trenton, Wisconsin. DIED- 1883 January 25, At the residence of Capt James DUNSTAN, at the Central mine, Keweenaw county of pneumonia, Perkins BURNHAM, aged 67 years, after an illness of 7 days. Mr. Crawford BURNHAM of Lowell, Massachusetts came for the body to have it shipped to Ripon, Wisconsin for burial. NEWS ITEM- Mathias NESTER pleaded guilty to breaking into the Atlantic mine store was taken to Jackson Penitentiary by Sheriff HEALY, to serve out his 18 months jail sentence. 1883 February 8 - PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN PROBATE MATTER- In the estate of Joseph FALARDEAN, his wife, Lea FALARDEAN, asked the court to appoint her administratix. MARRIED- 1883 January 7 - At Houghton, Mich., Mr. Edwin S. GILBERT and Mrs. Sophia E. PERKINS, both of Houghton. 1883 February 15 - PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN DIED- 1883 January 24- At St Paul, Minnesota, Mrs. Joseph SCHNITZER, aged 73 years, of Bright's disease, mother of Joseph SCHNITZER of Houghton. 1883 February 22 - PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN NEWS ITEM- Last Sunday afternoon, James COWAN, an old engineer of the Hecla mine engine house, had his hand badly lacerated. He was injured by a machine in the engine house when he put his hand down in the wrong place. This is his first injury in 15 years. 1883 March 1 - PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN PROBATE MATTER- In the matter of the estate of Daniel MURPHY, his guardian John DOYLE notified the court of his assets. MARRIED- 1883 February 23 At Calumet, at the residence of Joseph PHILLIPS, Mr. John REED to Miss Bessie PUGH. MARRIED- 1883 February 21, At Calumet at the residence of Mrs. Grace RICHARDS, Mr. Stephen TERRILL, born CORNWALL, ENGLAND and Miss Avantaline RICKARD. 1883 March 8 - PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN MARRIED- 1883 March 2 Friday at Lake Linden, at the residence of the brides parent's; Mr William C. HARRIS to Miss Agnes Ann POMROY. NEWS ITEM- Last Friday, Winnie, the ten year old daughter of Frank WARD of Red Jacket was severely scalded about the limbs and body. Dr OSBORNE says she will be fine in a few weeks. NEWS ITEM- Last Wednesday ni9ht, Frank OLESON, who lands rock at the No 4 shaft of the Calumet and Hecla mine, Calumet, met with an accident in which his little finger was torn off. He was trying to pry a rock loose and the car started and a crowbar jammed his finger. DIED- Last Tuesday Peter VAN GLENN was carrying a ladder, with another laborer, across No 8 shaft at the Huron mine. The rope in the shaft, at that time, struck the ladder and he was hurtled down the shaft being killed instantly. He had only been in the district a few weeks. He was from New York where two brothers and two sisters still live. 1883 March 15 - PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN MARRIED- Last Wednesday, at the residence of Mr. Alex MATHESON of Lake Linden, Mr. Hugh McKAY and Miss Isabelle MATHESON. DIED- Last Thursday, August DALLMEYER, who had been suffering with a complicated ailment for some time, died at his home in Houghton. He was one of earliest settlers of Houghton. His funeral was last Sunday at the Forest Hill cemetery, Houghton. 1883 April 5 - PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN DIED-1883 March 22- John WILLIAMS, aged 67 years, who 22 years ago had charge of the smelting works in this area, died in San Francisco, California. 1883 April 19 - PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN NEWS ITEM- Doc GRIERSON son of Capt. GRIERSON and William DANIELS, son of Capt DANIELS, left last week for Colorado. Ill health was the reason for leaving. 1883 May 10 - PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN DIED- 1883 May 5 - At her home in Ishpeming, Marquette County, Lizzie J. NOBLE, age 26 years, daughter of Capt Johnson VIVIAN. She leaves a husband, Arthur W. and a little daughter. The funeral was at the Hancock Congregational church on Tuesday afternoon. Burial was at Forest Hill cemetery, Houghton. DIED-1883 May 17-Early this morning John CHASSELL, and old resident of Houghton died at the DOUGLASS House He was a cashier at the local bank. His brother, J.R. CHASSELL from Holland Point, New York, was with him at his death. Burial will be there. 1883 May 31 - PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN DIED- Franklin HOPKINS, aged 67 years, was buried at Eagle Harbor cemetery, Keweenaw County, last Tuesday. He was one of the oldest settlers in the copper country. He came into the area 1845. He worked in the iron district 2 years and the rest of the time in the copper country. He was prominently connected with the Isle Royale, Central, Delaware and several defunct mines. DIED- Last Monday morning, a Polish man, Mike LAMATH, employed at the Hecla mine, came to a sudden death thru his own carelessness. While a skip was loaded from a chute, he tried to dislodge it by getting on the chute, the chute gave way knocking him down and rocks crushed him. This was the 4th accident to him in one year. 1883 June 7 - PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN DIED-1883 May 27 - Franklin HOPKINS, died at his home in Eagle Harbor, Keweenaw County. One of the earliest pioneers of Lake Superior area. He was born in New York in 1817 He had been well known thru out Keweenaw County being connected with mines as agent for the Delaware mine for 6 years, Central mine for two years and other mines. He came to this area in 1846 when all Eagle Harbor had was one big house. For the past 15 years he has been connected with the warehouse business. He leaves a wife and one son. He was buried at the Eagle Harbor cemetery. DIED- Two old residents of Houghton, Jacob RAMPH and Joseph GOTTSTEIN, have died recently. 1883 June 14 - PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN MARRIED- 1883 June 7 At the Lake Linden Methodist parsonage, Thomas BUZZO and Miss Catherine HEIMES, both of Ontonagon, Ontonagon County. DIED- 1883 June 11 Jane H. Delia MORRISETT, wife of Frank, age 42 years, died at her residence at CHASSELL's farm 1883 June 28 - PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN PROBATE MATTER- In the matter of the estate of John E. CHASSEL, deceased, William CONDIN asks that he be appointed administrator of the estate. DIED- Last Wednesday afternoon, Robbie GOTTSTEIN, son of Mr. Peter, aged 7 years, was playing near CLEAVE's foundry on the lake shore and fell into the lake and drowned. Funeral will be tomorrow afternoon at the Houghton home of Mr. GOTTSTEIN. 1883 July 5 - PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN PROBATE MATTER- In the matter of the estate of James R. BEESLY, aged 18 years; Eliza BEESLY, aged 16 years and William G. BEESLYT aged 13 years, minor children of Alfred BEESLY of Houghton county, deceased, Harry S. BEESLY, guardian of the children, asks the court to allow him to sell real estate in the estate. NEWS ITEM- Wm. DAVEY and James HEARN, miners working at the Calumet mine were severely injured when an unexploded hole went off. They are in the hospital. 1883 July 26 - PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN DIED- Last Saturday a boy named Tim REGAN, aged 14 years, residing at the Atlantic mine location, was working in the engine room in some way caught his clothes in the fly wheel and he was cut so bad that it led to his death. 1883 August 2 - PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN MARRIED- 1883 June 20 - At the Atlantic mine location, Thomas RAWLING of CORNWALL, ENGLAND to Miss Mary J. STEVENS of Atlantic mine. 1883 August 16 - PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN NEWS ITEM- Richard ROBERTS name appears quite often on court records, he is 14 years old and has been convicted of larceny four times. On last Wednesday he was in court for assaulting a son of Michael KELLY, by hitting him in the mouth with a stone, badly cutting his mouth and bruising his face. DIED- Sunday evening in BASTIAN's saloon in Red Jacket, William NORTHEY, who had complained of not feeling well, sat down in a chair in the rear of the saloon, slipped into unconsciousness and died immediately. A Coroner's jury determined death was due to excessive use of alcohol. He was buried Tuesday at Forest Hill cemetery, Houghton. He leaves a wife, Susanna. 1883 August 23 - PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN DIED- Last Monday, a Scandinavian named Akfel HABALAHEDY, a miner employed at the Tamarack mine, fell down the shaft and was instantly killed. 1883 August 30 - PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN MARRIAGE- 1883 August 27 Monday- At Lake Linden- Mr. Judson P. NORTH of Calumet to Miss Maggie, daughter of Alexander McNAUGHTON of Lake Linden. 1883 September 6 - PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON MICHIGAN NEWS ITEM- Last Saturday Mr. and Mrs. D.D. BROCKWAY, Miss Sophia BROCKWAY, their daughter of the Phoenix location, Keweenaw County and Mrs. BUTLER of the Franklin mine, were driving thru Calumet, met with an accident. A crowd of boys in the street yelled and scared the horses of Mr BROCK WAY and overturned the carriage and injured Mrs. BUTLER, with a broken arm and Mrs. BROCKWAY injury to the jaw and knee. 1883 September 20 - PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN DIED- 1883 September 15 -Amelia M., wife of Edward SILLER, aged 42 years, died at her East Houghton home after a brief illness. She was buried at Forest Hill cemetery, Houghton. She leaves a husband and children. She was the daughter of William NEWCOMBE of Houghton. She was married to her husband in the early days of the settlement of Portage Lake. DIED- Last Tuesday afternoon, Willie, the three year old son of Mr. Harry NATTLE of Red Jacket, died at his home, after a 3 day illness. DIED- Wednesday morning, William J. COOMBE, aged 41 years, a miner employed at the Osceola mine, was killed by an explosion in a hole in the mine. He and his son drilled and charged them and imagined they heard the 3 holes go off. He went back to see the effects of the explosion and one went off as he approached it, killing him. He was born in CORNWALL, ENGLAND, the son of William and Mary Ann. he leaves a wile and nine children. The son helping his father is the only one old enough to help support the family. 1883 October 11 - PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN DIED- Last Friday James NANCARROW, one of the oldest inhabitants of Red Jacket, died at his home. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at Lake SHORE cemetery, Calumet. He was born in CORNWALL, ENGLAND. NEWS ITEM- For 25 years Tom PAULL has resided on a farm near the Manhattan mine, 5 miles this side of Eagle River, Keweenaw County. He tried farming; mining for copper; operating a hotel but none of these worked out. He moved to Calumet finally and has 4 sons working at the Calumet and Hecla mine. 1883 October 25 - PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN MARRIED- 1883 October 17 - at Hurontown, Mr. Nathaniel HOCKING to Miss Bertha KNELL. DIED- Last Friday Mr. N. S. SIMPKINS, Jr. died in New York of Bright's disease. He will be remembered by the early settlers as Clerk of the Quincy mine, which position he assumed in 1858 and retained for several years. At the time of his death he was selling agent for the Calumet and Hecla mine. He was a bachelor and about 50 years old. 1883 November 8, PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN MARRIED- 1883 October 31 At the residence of the bride's parents in Duluth, Minnesota, Mr. Thomas H. HULBERT of Middletown, Connecticut to Miss Mary ALLEN. MARRIED- 1883 November 8 at the Houghton Methodist church parsonage, Mr. Thomas F. BANBURY to Miss Ann C. RICHARDS, both of Lake Linden. DIED- Last Thursday morning at her Houghton home, of inflammation of the lungs, Mrs. Elizabeth, wife of Robert DOWN, aged 54 years. 1883 November 15 - PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN DIED- Last Friday William RYAN who was at work in the Hancock mine, was killed while tamping a hole for an explosion. 1883 November 22 - PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN MARRIED-1B83 November 8 At Teluride, Colorado, at the residence of the bride's parents; Mr C. ENDERICH of Houghton, Michigan to Miss Harriet Ann EVERS, formerly of Eaton, Madison County, New York, and late of Goldwater and Grand Rapids, Michigan. MARRIED- 1883 Nov 14 - At lake Linden Methodist parsonage; Mr. James John BARKELL and Miss Christina MILLER, both of Lake Linden. DIED- Last night, two miners, employed at the Franklin mine, John NEAL, single and Dennis S. GREEN were killed by a premature blast of a hole charged with black powder. GREEN leaves a wile and seven children. 1883 November 28 - PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN NEWS ITEM- Last Friday Peter PALAKOVITZ was dangerously, if not fatally injured at the Osceola mine by falling 300 feet down a shaft. He was a mass of bruised from head to foot. NEWS ITEM- Last Saturday John RAPSON, August OLSON and John LEIPPE were injured by a fall of rock in the Hecla mine. OLSON and LEPPE were only slightly scratched and RAPSON was badly injured. 1883 December 6 - PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN MARRIED- 1883 November 29, Thursday, at the Quincy mine residence of the bride's parents, Mr. John S. PENROSE of Houghton to Miss Maggie KITTO of Quincy mine. DIED- 1883 November 27, Michael, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Maurice SPRING, aged 25 years. He was buried at Forest Hill cemetery, Houghton. ADMITTED TO US CITIZENSHIP -- Samuel PASGOE; Arvig PITKANEN; and Phillip ZEITZ, became US citizens at the last term of the Circuit court hearing. 1883 December 13-PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN DIED-Last Friday, Mr. Joseph HIRSCH of Moorshead, Minnesota had died at his home. He was formerly of Red Jacket and was one of the old residents in Red Jacket. DIED- Last Saturday by a premature explosion in the Copper Falls mine, Keweenaw County, Thomas WARNE was killed. 1883 December 27 - PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN DIED- Lyman H. JACOBS, aged 51 years, a former resident of Houghton, died at his home in Duluth, Minnesota, a week ago last Sunday. File contributed for use in Houghton Co.
