A few days after the wedding the groom left his bride for parts unknown. 1885 January 22 PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN MARRIED- 1885 January 7- At Lead City, South Dakota, Mr. Ed BRELSFORD son of Mr. R. H. NRELSFORD of Hancock to Miss Louise MARTIN, formerly of Hancock. 31 of the wedding guests were formerly of the copper country. 1885 January 29 PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN DEATH- Last Thursday Peter PIERCE, an old resident of Eagle River, lately appointed deputy sheriff of the Keweenaw County, came to his death by exposure. He walked from Eagle River to the Harbor to serve a paper and on the way back he was exhausted and fell on the side of the road and died of the cold. Mr. John SENTER found him the following morning. He was born in CORNWALL, ENGLAND the son of Thomas PIERCE. He was buried last Sunday at Eagle River cemetery. 1885 February 19 PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN DIED- Last Saturday Mr. R. H. RICKARD died at his home in Stamford, Connecticut of pneumonia. He was at one time a resident of the copper country. For the last 25 years he was a mine broker in New York City. He was the financial agent for a number of people in the Lake Superior district. He leaves a wife and several children. DIED -Last Monday in Detroit, Michigan, Mr. William R. NOBLE died at his home there. For some years he was one of the pioneers of this locality. He remains will arrive from Detroit this evening and he will be buried from Hancock tomorrow. DIED- Last Friday William TRESISE, keeper of the range lights at Fort Wilkins, Copper Harbor, Keweenaw County, died from an amputation of one of his legs last fall. 1885 March 5 PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN NEWS ITEM- A resident of Houghton George BETZLER was taken to the Insane Asylum at Kalamazoo, Michigan last Monday. MARRIED- 1885 March 2- Mr. William WILLIAMS of Calumet to Miss Carrie WILLIAMS of Houghton. 1885 March 12-PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN NEWS ITEM- Last Monday Frank D. LOVEJOY was brought before Justice McDONALD's court in Calumet charged with incest. Frances LOWSENHARD was the complaining witness. The case was dismissed as the girl was thought to be a dishonest witness by the judge and there was no one to back up her story. 1885 March 19 PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN MARRIAGE- 1885 March 7 Sunday, at Pewabic, Mr. John S. SOREY of Franklin mine to Miss Hellena JENNINGS of Hancock. MARRIAGE 1885 March 7 Sunday- At Pewabic, Mr. William Charles WILLS of Pewabic mine to Miss Mary Ann MARKS of Quincy. 1885 APRIL 2 -PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN NEWS ITEM- Ned CARROLL, a resident of Red Jacket, has the same disease that afflicts General GRANT, cancer at the base of the tongue. 1885 April 9 PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN MARRIED- 1885 April 4 at Franklin mine, at the residence of the bride's parents, Mr. George Scott WARNE to Miss Lydia NETTELL. MARRIED- 1885 April 7, At Franklin mine, at the residence of the bride's parents, Mr. William SLEEMAN to Miss Catherine SHEPHERD 1885 April 16 PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN NEWS ITEM- Last Tuesday Lars Anderson BUNKALA and Amanda KENKILA were in the Calumet circuit court charged with adultery by Mrs. KENKLA's husband. 1885 April 23 PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN DIED- 1885 April 3 William PARSONS, Sr., aged 54 years, died at his home in Houghton. He was born in CORNWALL, ENGLAND, son of John and Phillippa. He was buried in Forest Hill cemetery, Houghton. 1885 April 30 PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN DIED- Last Monday David LAMPEL and Lars ROTINAKA while at work in the Allouez mine, Keweenaw County, died as a result of falling rock in the mine. They died almost immediately. DIED- 1885 April 27 Mine Captain Thomas WILCOX, age 62 years, of Calumet, died Monday, after a short illness. He was born in CORNWALL, ENGLAND, the son of Thomas and Mary. He was buried Wednesday. 1885 May 7 PORTAGE L,AKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN DIED- Last Tuesday night, Capt John C. RYAN, aged 56 years, died at his home in Hancock, after a short illness. He had been a resident of this locality over 32 years. He settled here from his birthplace, Ireland. He served as superintendent of most mines in the area. At the time of his death, he was in charge of the Hancock mine. He is mourned by his wife, three daughters and two sons. One son is sheriff of Houghton County, W. J. RYAN. Edward RYAN is a leading merchant of Calumet and Hancock. and William RYAN of Fort Dodge, Iowa are is surviving brothers . The funeral was this morning at St Mn's? church, Hancock. 1885 June 4 PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN DIED- Last Sunday night. William HARRIS, aged 59 years, died at his home in Houghton after an illness of several weeks. He was one of the pioneers, having lived here for 33 years. For years he was one of the partners of the firm, SMITH and HARRIS in Houghton. He leaves a widow, Mary A. and several children. The funeral was held on Tuesday at the Houghton Methodist church. He was buried at Forest Hill cemetery, Houghton. DIED- Miss Lena BECKER, on last Tuesday, was to have been married but she died instead and her wedding dress was used as a shroud, at her burial on Wednesday. 1885 June 18 PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN DIED- Last Tuesday two miners employed in the Copper Falls mine, Keweenaw, County, William H. CLARK and James PRINK, were killed by handling a blast that did not go off. NEWS ITEM- Mr. and Mrs. Richard HUSBAND decided to spend the rest of their days in CORNWALL, ENGLAND. MARRIAGE- Last Monday in Houghton, at Trinity church, Mr. Edward C. TAYLOR and Miss Lydia JAMES, both of Houghton. They will reside in East Houghton. File contributed for use in Houghton Co.
