THE PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN NEWS ITEMS 1886 January 14 Thursday- Charles HASSELL was injured by an explosion of some Hercules powder, Monday afternoon in No 5 Shaft of the Calumet mine. His hand was severely cut and his face was peppered with fine bits of rock. 1886 January 14 Thursday-- John GERMAN, a trammer in the Calumet mine, broke his leg by running in the mine and hitting a tram car. He was taken to the Calumet and Hecla hospital. MARRIAGE 1886 January 14 Thursday Mr. John SHERIDAN wed Miss Zeta WILMERSON on Sunday evening, January 9, at the Catholic church, Calumet. DEATHS 1886 Feb 4 Thursday-- Mr. James OXNAM, formerly of the copper country, was drowned in the Germania mine, Butte, Montana on January 19. Two bands played at his funeral and the men were--The Alice band- Prof J. H. VIOL(leader); Dan NEIL; Wm SARA; Joe BROUGHTON; Wm HENDY; Ben JENNINGS; Wm CARBIS; James HENDREW; Joseph NORTHY; Wm BODY; John CARBIS; James BROUGHTON; Richard POLKINGHORN; George SANDOW; Henry RODDA; Tom BURT; Sam BARKER; and Walter WILLIAMS. The BUTTE CITY BAND-- Fred ADLER (leader); John PELLER; John WILLIAMS; T. H. THOMAS; Charles YOUNG; Frank MARSH; and George FITCHEN. The miners from all over the area turned out for the largest funeral in Butte. The men in the Alice BAND probably are CORNISH. 1886 Feb 4 Thursday-- At Hancock, January 31 of cankered sore mouth, Jennie WARNER, wife of E. E. WARNER, aged 34 years, died. Funeral the following Monday. 1886 Feb 11 Thursday Theodore ENDERLY, green grocer of Calumet, was found lying in the street Sunday night, by the night watchman, he was found to be dead, after he was taken to jail. Coroners jury decided he had had too much alcohol which caused his death. He was buried Wednesday afternoon at the Calumet Cemetery. 1886 Feb 11 Thursday-- Philomene,15 year old daughter of Adam STROH, died of diphtheria at the Calumet mine location, on Sunday. This the 3rd child to die in Mr. STROH's family. NEWS ITEM 1886 FEB 18 Thursday-- Mr. and Mrs. Samuel UREN of Hancock were given a surprise silver anniversary party last Tuesday evening. 1886 Feb 18 Thursday-- John DAVEY, a lad of 16 years, had his hand blown off at the Allouez mine last Friday. He was blowing some sawdust off some mining caps when a spark from his candle exploded them. DEATH 1886 March 4 Thursday-Wm. H. HOWE, aged 69 years old, died in North Bloomfield, Ohio, February 13, 1886. Mr. HOWE was among the first who became interested in copper mining in Lake Superior, having made his first visit to the region in 1844 and in the following year with a party of miners spent several months exploring the region near Copper Harbor, Keweenaw County. He was one of the original buyers of the CLIFF mine, where he lived from 1864 thru 1869. DEATHS 1886 March 11 Thursday-- On Monday at Calumet, Tim LEARY was killed in a mine accident in the Calumet and Hecla mine by a rock falling on him while unloading a skip. 1886 March 11 Thursday-- Last Saturday last, Fred ENGSTROM, employed in the Lake Superior mine at Ishpeming, Marquette County, Mich., was killed by a rock while climbing a ladder in the mine. 1886 March 11 Thursday-- James A. ROOT, founder of the Pioneer furnace, in Negaunee, Marquette County, was killed Monday forenoon, by being run over in the yard by a switching freight train .He was about 60 years old. He was shot by Mike McCARTHY who is being held to answer for it. 1886 Apr 29 Thursday- Wm CADDY, miner, formerly worked at the Atlantic mine in Houghton area, was killed in the Idaho mine, Grass Valley, Colorado a short time ago. He leaves a wife and 5 children. PROBABLY CORNISH DEATH 1886 APRIL 29 Thursday- Jacob GLOOMY, a Polish miner, employed at the Atlantic mine, dropped dead Tuesday morning last while at work underground. It was found he died from a heart condition. The remains were shipped to Elmira, New York for burial. Her father was John KLINE was born in New Jersey. She was 84 years old and wed her husband, in 1825. DEATHS 1886 Nov 18 Thursday-Mrs. Adam HAAS of Houghton, widow of the late Adam HAAS, died last Tuesday, aged 61 years old. Burial was at Forest Hill cemetery, Houghton. Burial was at the Forest Hill cemetery, Houghton. 1886 Dec 9 Thursday-- The remains of Richard FOLEY, who died at Lake Linden last week, were brought to Houghton Friday and buried in Forest Hill cemetery. 1886 Dec 16 Thursday-- Mr John GRAY died at the Houghton home of his sister, Mrs. Benjamin BROWN, Saturday last, of consumption. His body was taken to Ontonagon, Ontonagon County for burial. 1886 Dec 30 Thursday Carl SAMMNELl, of Finland, was instantly killed at the Atlantic mine last week Wednesday by falling down a mine shaft.
