THE PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE NEWSPAPER, HOUGHTON, MICH 1887 January 6 Thursday-- Wm SANDSTROM of Sweden, an employee at the Atlantic Stamp Mill was instantly killed Monday morning. He was caught by a revolving shaft and killed. He left a wife and one child. 1887 January 6 Thursday-- Joseph TAMBLYN, at one time employed at the Franklin Mine, while drunk upset a tank of boiling water on himself in Iron Mountain, Dickinson County, Mich. on Christmas and died the following Tuesday from the effects. 1887 January 6 Thursday-- Peter MAGA, an employee of the Calumet mine, fell off the main engine on Tuesday and broke his spine causing his death. 1887 January 13 Thursday-- Robert NELSON, aged 62 years, an old resident of Calumet, died at his home on Monday evening. Burial Calumet Lake View cemetery. DEATH 1887 January 27 Thursday-- Edward BERRYMAN, a single man, was killed at Copper Falls mine, Keweenaw County, Mich., Monday morning by being caught in machinery underground and crushed MARRIAGE 1887 Feb 10 Thursday--This evening at Houghton in the brides mothers house, Mr. Edwin CURRY wed Miss Kate STROBEL on Thursday Feb 3, DEATHS 1887 Feb 10 Thursday-- Last Tuesday evening Lewis KEMPI who was born in Finland, was instantly killed in the Atlantic mine by falling down a mine shaft. 1887 Feb 24 Thursday-Mrs. Wm C. KINSMAN died at her home in Red Jacket Wednesday morning Feb 23. 1887 March 3 Thursday-Mrs. John STEIMEL died at her Quincy location home Saturday last, leaving 5 children. 1887 March 10 Thursday-- Wednesday last, John MILLS, an employee of the Calumet and Hecla mining company, was caught by rapidly revolving shaft and killed. He worked at the mine for 15 years. 1887 March 17 Thursday-- Wm UREN, surface boss at the Franklin mine, died Sunday last after an illness that covered over several months. He has lived in this district over 28 years. Burial will be at Forest Hills cemetery, Houghton. OBVIOUSLY BORN IN CORNWALL. 1887 March 17 Thursday-- Paul KEAST, a miner, was killed in the Tamarack mine Saturday morning by the falling of a bucket used to hoist rock falling on him. 1987 March 24 Thomas OXNAN, nigh I foreman in the Drum Lammon mine, Montana had a narrow escape while riding one of the cars in the mine, jumping the track but luckily he was not injured. He is a cousin of Wm OXNAM of the Germania Mine of Butte, Montana who was drowned a year ago in the same mine. 1887 April 7 Joseph SEIFERT, an old resident of Houghton, died at his home at the age of 57 years on Monday night last. He was a member of the German Aid Society. He leaves a widow and family. 1887 April 14 Mr. Wm DEE, Sr. died at Lake Linden last Thursday morning, aged 70 years. He leaves 6 children, one of the eldest, John H. DEE. He was old resident of Keweenaw County having lived there from the 1860's until about 2 years ago when he moved to Lake Linden. 1887 April 14 Mr. Jacob WERTIN, brother of Joseph WERTIN of Hancock, died at Lake Linden Sunday last, at the age of 65 years. NEWS ITEM 1887 April 14 Thursday-- Frank KUBERTI of Finland, who stabbed Wm ANTILLA, of Finland, was brought to the Atlantic mine, April 8 to be submitted for trial for his actions. 1887 May 12 Thursday-Mr. James THOMAS, who resigned as Houghton village recorder, left here Tuesday as he accepted a position in Detroit and will live there. 1887 June 2 Thursday Mr. Carroll PITTMAN, formerly of this office in our paper, left Wednesday morning ,for California to try his fortune there. MARRIAGES 1887 June 2 Thursday-- In Houghton at the Methodist church parsonage, Mr. James ANSTISS wed Miss Elizabeth Ann BESWETHERICK. Both of Quincy. 1887 June 2 Thursday-- In Houghton at the Methodist church parsonage, Mr. Wm HOBBA wed Miss Hannah Mary PENHALL, both of Quincy. Both of the above marriages are of POSSIBLE CORNISH. DEATHS 1887 June 16 Thursday-- One of the most disastrous mine accidents in years occurred last Saturday afternoon at the Huron mine with 4 men losing their lives all thru carelessness and disobedience in riding the skiffs. Those that died are James MAGA; Antoine PATRO; John PIANA and Harry ANDREA, all from Italy. Burial was at Lakeside cemetery, Hancock. MARRIAGE 1887 June 23 Thursday-Mr. Fed W. KROLL wed Miss Lizzie HATTICH of Lake Linden, on Wednesday evening last at the Hurontown home of the grooms mother. DEATH 1887 July 7-- Thursday-- Gabriel GROPE, an employee in Burtis Saw Mill in Marquette, Marquette County, Mich., Wednesday was cut in two by a saw due to his being knocked into it. NEWS ITEM 1887 July 7 Thursday-- Capt Henry GEORGE, an old timer on Lake Superior and formerly superintendent of the Franklin mine, was renewing friendships with friends in the area. 1887 July 7 Thursday-Mr. and Mrs. John D. HOFFMAN left Saturday last to go to Chicago and from there to California where they will make their home. He was a former teacher at the Houghton Mining School. DEATHS 1887 July 14 Thursday-- George REIS, superintendent of the Iron River furnace, Iron County, Mich., was killed on the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad at Iron River Tuesday, by an ore car which was bumped back as he was crossing the tracks. 1887 Aug 18 Thursday- George RICHARDS of Hancock was killed by the falling of a heavy box of plate glass, yesterday morning. DEATH 1887 Aug 18 Thursday-- Patrick HARRINGTON, about 50 years old, was killed at the Calumet and Hecla mine shaft No. 12 in Calumet by hanging rocks falling on him. Matt BACKER was seriously injured at the same time. NEWS ITEM 1887 Aug 18 Thursday-Mr. Joseph KITTS returned to Quincy location, last Sunday, from CORNWALL, ENGLAND, where he has been spending 3 months visiting relatives and friends. DEATH 1887 Sept 1 Thursday-- At Atlantic, Saturday Feb 24, Jerry SHEA died. MARRIAGE 1887 Sept 8 Thursday-- At Sheboygan, Wisconsin-Mr. Joseph SCHULTE of Houghton wed Miss Kate M. MEYER, of Sheboygan, Wisconsin, at the home of the brides parents in Sheboygan, Aug 21 . They will reside in Houghton. DEATH 1887 Sept 8 Thursday-- Emma KERRIDGE, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph KERRIDGE, at Hancock, died Tuesday Sept 6, 17 years old. MARRIAGE 1887 Sept 29 Thursday- at Red JACKET---Mr. James NANKERVIS, for many years bookeeper for Messrs BEAR and DYMOCK of Red Jacket wed Miss Susie WILLIAMS of Hancock. They took a train for Port Sanilac, Michigan to visit his brother, Rev. Thomas NANKERVIS. OBVIOUS BORN CORNWALL. DEATHS 1887 Sept 29 Thursday--Mr John PENBERTHY, brother of Postmaster E. R. PENBERTHY of Houghton, died in British Columbia last Thursday. 1887 Oct 6 Thursday-- At Iron Mountain, Dickinson County, Mich.-- On Tuesday Sept 17, 1887, Henry R. MULOCK, 29 years old, died. He was the son of Robert P. MULOCK, formerly of Houghton and now of Coltax, Iowa. His remains were shipped to Houghton and he was buried in the family plat at Forest Hill cemetery, Houghton. 1887 Oct 6 Thursday-Mrs. John FORD, formerly of Hurontown, but late of Red Jacket, died at Red Jacket last Monday evening. Her body was brought to Houghton for burial ay Forest Hill cemetery. There was a large group of relatives and friends at the cemetery. She was the daughter of Mr. Wm HOSKING and the sister of Wm. HOSKING, Jr. of red Jacket. She was born in CORNWALL, ENGLAND. MARRIAGES 1887 Oct 6 Thursday-- At Houghton,. Stephen PRINCE wed Miss Fannie A. TREZONA both of Houghton, were wed at home of the bride's parents on last Thursday evening. 1887 Oct 6 Thursday-Mr. Will HOFFENBACHER , of Hancock, left last Sunday morning for Mineral Point, Wisconsin, where he will be married to Miss Clara PRIDEAUX dau. of Mr. and Mrs. Edward PRIDEAUX of that city. On his return to Hancock with his wife and his sister, Miss Kittie HOFFENBACHER. 1887 Oct 13 Thursday --At Houghton yesterday afternoon, Mr. Charles F. HALL wed Miss Addie Elizabeth TREVETHAN, at the home of the brides parents. They will live in Houghton. DEATH 1887 Oct 20 Thursday-- Emil WAGNER, son of Mr. C. Fred WAGNER ,head carpenter at the Quincy mill, died in an accident at Mr. C. J. HODGE's iron Works last Friday evening. He died by an electric shock from touching wires hooked to a crane. MARRIAGES 1887 Oct 20 Thursday-- On last Tuesday, Mr. Henry KUTSCHIED wed Miss Barbara PETERS, both of Hurontown, at St Ignatius church, Houghton. 1887 Oct 20 Thursday, on Tuesday last, Mr. Elzear LANGEVIN wed Miss Duloina LaPAGE, of Sturgeon River, at St Ignatius church, Houghton. DEATH 1887 Oct 20 Thursday, Mrs. John HOSKING, of the Franklin Mine location, died at her home after a short illness. She leaves a husband and 10 children to mourn her loss. Burial will be at Forest Hill cemetery, Houghton. Her sisters, Mrs. John P. ROBERTS of Red Jacket; Mrs. H. W. ROGERS of L'Anse; and Mrs. Henry JACKSON, Jr. of Marquette all attended the funeral. MARRIAGE 1887 Oct 27 Thursday-- At the home of the brides parents at Boot Jack, Portage Lake, Wednesday Oct 26, Mr. George JAMES of Lake Linden wed Miss Mary BLONDO, of Boot Jack. 1887 Nov 3 Thursday-- Miss Jennie CARAH left Houghton yesterday morning for Cherokee, Iowa to join her sister in the dressmaking business. NEWS ITEM 1887 Nov 3 Thursday-- Mr James THOMAS and Edgar RASHLEIGH, both of Houghton, left last night for New York City where they will seek their fortune. DEATHS 1887 Nov 3 Thursday-- At Houghton, Tuesday, Nov 1, George M1NNEAR, age 61 years old. Mr. and Mrs. A. J. MENEREY of Lake Linden, attended the funeral, she was his daughter. 1887 Nov 3 Thursday-- At Ripley, Oct 27, Victor FONTAINE, aged 69 years. 1887 Nov 3 Thursday- At Hancock, Oct 28, Mrs. John VERHOVEN, aged 28 years. DEATHS 1887 Nov 10 Thursday-- John PREMOSKY, employed at the Atlantic mine, was killed Saturday morning rock. He leaves a wife and 5 children. 1887 Nov 10 Thursday-- Adam STEFLES, employed at the Calumet and Hecla mill, about 50 years old, was killed in the shafting of a fly wheel. 1887 Nov 10 Thursday--Clara PATON, wife of John C. PATON, died Nov 4, Friday 1887 Nov 10 Thursday--Win WILLIS, 39 years, died Nov 5, Saturday. He left a wife. 1887 Nov 17 Thursday-- The Hancock Chemical Company had a terrible explosion yesterday morning killing Wm LAPP, Jr. of Hancock leaves a wife; Charles BARKELL; Thomas THOMPSON both of Ripley ; Timothy CROWLEY of Grover; Wm KING of Tamarack town ; and Wm RENO of Woodside. The last 5 men were young men ranging from 15 years thru 18 years. Wm LAPP, Jr. and Charles BARKELL were buried in Hancock cemetery. Timothy CROWLEY 16 years old, son of Mr. and Mrs. Michael CROWLEY and Win KING were buried at Lake Linden. 1887 Nov 24 Thursday-- Dominic MASSCOCO, an Italian miner, aged about 50 years old died due to a mine accident at the Calumet and Hecla mine at Calumet. He leaves a wife and 7 children in Italy. He was buried in the Lake Linden Catholic cemetery. 1887 Nov 24 Thursday-- Hugh GRAHAM, a Scottish miner, dropped dead at the Calumet and Hecla mine, while standing in line for his pay, on last Saturday. He was about 70 years old and leaves a wife only. He was buried in the Schoolcraft cemetery. 1887 Nov 24 Thursday--The funeral of Mrs. Mary WILLIAMS, wife of Mr. John WILLIAMS of the Lake Superior Foundry, She was born in CORNWALL, ENGLAND and was 32 years old. She died at her Hancock home. She leaves a husband; she was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James CRUSE who also survive her; 5 children and one brother. Her father is in charge of several iron mines near Kingston, Ontario, Canada. MARRIAGE 1887 Nov 24 Thursday-Mr. James KEMP of Republic mine wed Miss Maggie RAY of Osceola at Hecla Catholic church, Calumet, this morning. 1887 Nov 24 Thursday-Mr. George BAWDEN died Monday evening at the home of his daughter-in-law, Mrs. Edward BAWDEN on Montezuma Street in Houghton. He was 80 years old, born in CORNWALL, ENGLAND. Another daughter who lives in the Gogebic range, Minnesota could not be contacted about his death. He was buried at Forest Hill Cemetery, Houghton. DEATH 1887 Dec 1 Thursday--The funeral of Max NOVALSKY, the Polish miner, who was killed in the Atlantic mine last Thursday, took place at St Ignatius church, Houghton, last Thursday. He was 38 years old and leaves at the mine a wife and 5 children. Burial was at Forest Hill cemetery, Houghton. MARRIAGE 1887 Dec 1 Thursday-Mr. Wm E. SEWELL, Captain of the tug J. G. CHASELL wed Miss Sarah OWENS on Wednesday afternoon last week, at the residence of the bride in Lake Linden. They will live in Lake Linden. DEATH 1887 Dec 1 Thursday-- Miss Hermeline LIZOTTE, aged 28 years, was buried Friday from St. Ignatius church, Houghton. MARRIAGES 1887 Dec 1 Thursday--At Lake Linden St Joseph's church, Mr. Anselm BOUVET wed Miss Almena CHAMPAGNE. 1887 Dec 1 Thursday, at Lake Linden St Joseph's church, Mr. Pierre PAIRIER wed Miss Philomena COLIN. NEWS ITEM 1887 Dec 8 Thursday-- James HOBBA, a miner at the Huron mine on Monday morning injured his wrist in the mine and he was brought home to his Houghton boardinghouse to recover after a doctor at the mine attended to it. DEATH 1887 Dec 15 Thursday-Mr. Joseph MARTIN, an old respected citizen of Houghton, died at his home on Second Street, Thursday night last, Dec 8. Paralysis was the cause of his death. Several years ago, with one of his sons, he went west and engaged in farming. He had his attack of paralysis there and last spring he was brought back to Houghton a confirmed invalid. For ten years he lived in L'Anse and Michigamme. He leaves a wife and a large family all grown children. 1887 Dec 15 Thursday-- Frank MONTGOMERY, aged about 41 years, died Saturday afternoon at Mr. CORBELLs boarding house, Frenchtown. He died of a cancerous growth on his shoulder. Burial was at Forest Hill cemetery, Houghton. He leaves a wife and a son in Detroit. MARRIAGE 1887 Dec 15 Thursday, Last Thursday evening at the German Lutheran Church, Hancock West Hancock, Mr. John BROHN wed Miss Barbara SCHELLMAN, daughter of Mr. John SCHELLMAN of West Hancock. DEATH 1887 Dec 15 Thursday, Mrs. Anton FISHER, of Rambaultown, whose husband is a brother of Mr. Ernest FISHER, owner of the marble works in West Hancock, died last Saturday forenoon of consumption and was buried from the German Lutheran Church in Hancock. DEATHS 1887 Dec 15 Thursday, Matthias KRUSKA, aged about 40 years, was killed Tuesday morning by being caught in the gearing and killed. He leaves a wife and 5 children. Services were at the Polish Catholic church. 1887 Dec 15 Thursday--Mrs. LOUIS ROBERG, of West Hancock, was buried in the Hancock Catholic cemetery from St Joseph's church Sunday morning.
