PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE NEWSPAPER,HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN DEATH NOT IN HOUGHTON COUNTY RECORDS 1889 July 4 JAMES CHELLEW, the young man who died in Calumet at the Hecla mine, last Thursday, by falling 800 feet, was buried in the Hancock Protestant cemetery Sunday afternoon. MARRIAGE 1889 June 29 At the Congregational Parsonage in Hancock, Michigan, Mr. Wm STEPHENS wed Miss Ida OLSON both of Calumet, Michigan. NEWS ITEMS 1889 July 18 Mrs. TERRILL of Atlantic Mine, wile of Mr. T. H. TERRILL, left Houghton on the 2;;00 PM train Saturday, wither her son wm and her small daughter. They will go to New York in a few days for a trip to Bodmin, Cornwall, England. Mr. TERRILL will join them and they will stay a year. Wm., the son stayed in Chicago. 1889 July 17 Captain Wm TONKIN left on the train for St. Thomas, Canada. MARRIAGES 1889 July 18 At Hancock at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel UREN, Mr. James C. HEIMBACH, formerly of Ripley, Michigan and now of Butte, Montana wed Miss Annie L. NANKERVIS, niece of Mrs. Uren. They were married by the brides lather, Rev. H. NANKERVIS, of Crosswell, Sanilac County, Michigan,. He moved from the Upper Peninsula some years ago to lower Michigan. Mr. Thomas NANKERVIS, of Ishpeming, Michigan, uncle of the bride gave her away. Her cousin of Ishpeming, Miss Zula NANKERVIS was. the bridesmaid .They will leave for Butte, Montana after wed. 1889 July 25 Mr. James BERRYMAN of Calumet wed Miss Lizzie DAVEY, Tuesday evening at the home of her father, Mr. Thomas M. DAVEY, in East Houghton. They will live in Calumet where the groom works at the Calumet & Hecla mine. NEWS ITEM 1889 July 25 Mrs. John RASHLEIGH, with her daughter, Susie left for Mineral Point, Wisconsin to visit her sister, Mrs. J. BECKERLEG. OBITUARY NOT IN HOUGHTON COUNTY RECORDS 1889 July 29 Capt. Samuel McDONALD of Hancock died at the home of his son in law, Mr. Thomas B. DUNSTAN. He was of Scottish descent, but was born in CORNWALL, ENGLAND. His first mining work was in Scotland and he migrated to America in 1854. In 1858 he came to Lake Superior, first working in the Cliff Mine in 1889 his wife died in Pontiac, Michigan where he retired. He than came back to Hancock to live with his son in law. NEWS ITEM The 1889 graduating class of the Houghton School of Mines was given diplomas on July 26. One of them were; Reginald C. PRYOR; the 1888 class some; John L. HARRIS; Samuel A. PARNELL; Wm E. PARNELL; Win J. UREN; and Wm J. REID. DEATH 1889 Aug 1 - The remains of the 4 yr old daughter, of Mr. and Mrs. Charles TRENGROVE of Opechee, Mich., were buried in Houghton Cemetery. DEATH 1889 Aug 13 A little child of Mr. and Mrs. James OPIE, of Hurontown, was buried today at the Hancock Protestant Cemetery. NEWS ITEMS 1889 Aug 20 Mr. Richard M. SAMPSON of Norway, Michigan had been appointed Postmaster of Norway by President Harrison. 1889 Aug 20 Mr. and Mrs. Peter HOLMAN arrived in New York last week by ship, having visited relatives in their birthplace in CORNWALL ENGLAND. They arrived home this week. 1889 Aug 29 Mr. James HANLEY left Hancock, Michigan as foreman in a copper smelting works in Bridgeport, Conneticutt. (This was put in to show another copper areas) DEATH NOT IN HOUGHTON COUNTY RECORDS 1889 Sept 5 Richard JAMES of Calumet and a brother of Wm J. JAMES of the Baer Meat Market in Hancock was buried from the Hancock Methodist Church on Monday afternoon. He was a young, unmarried man at 22 years. He died in Calumet on Saturday after a one week illness . NEWS ITEM 1889sept 5 Mr. Richard SAMPSON newly appointed postmaster of Norway, Michigan visited his parents, Mr. and Mrs.Richard SAMPSON of Hurontown. Also Misses Mary and Martha Clark of ST Thomas, Ontario, Canada were visiting them as they were relatives. DEATH 1889 Sept 12- Mrs. W. H. ROGERS nee Ellen PENROSE and a sister of John S. PENROSE of Houghton and Mrs. S. M. BATES of Hancock, died last Friday at her home in L'Anse, Michigan. She leaves a husband and a 12 year old daughter. She was 32years old. Her early life was spent in Houghton. She was buried in L'Anse. NEWS ITEM 1889 Sept 19 Capt. J. K. CUNDY recently resigned his position as mining Captain at the Champion Mine and was given a reception by the employees. He is the brother of Mr. J. G. CUNDY of Houghton . MARRIAGE 1889 Sept 26 Mr. Edwin J. PRYOR was married Sept 19 to Miss Annie DAVEY. Her sister, Miss Ruth DAVEY was bridesmaid. The groom was Fred FULLER of the mining school. The wedding was at the brides father's home in East Houghton . NEWS ITEM 1889 OCT 17 MR AND MRS WM J.INGRAM left for CORNWALL, ENGLAND, their homeland to spend the winter. DEATH 1889 Oct 24 Mr. John PRYOR: an old resident and well known citizen of Houghton, died on Oct 21. He was 62 years old and as member of the Sons of St George. He was born In CORNWALL, ENGLAND. NEWS ITEM 1889 Oct 24 Mr. Edwin TEMBY, after may years in the teaming business, retired from active business and will auction off his horses this week. He and his wife left for a trip thru the mining district of Montana visiting their daughter, Mrs. Thomas BURGAN. MARRIAGE 1889 Nov 2 At the Methodist Parsonage in Hancock, Mr. Samuel WILLIAMS wed Miss Lavinia ALLEN, both of Hancock. DEATHS NOT IN HOUGHTON COUNTY RECORDS 1890 Feb 2 Mrs. Wm VIAL, 20 years old, died at the home of husbands mother on Quincy Mine location. She died of consumption. She was a daughter of Andrew BERRYMAN of Franklin Mine. 1890 Feb 11 Mrs. Wm GROSE died from consumption, she and her husband surviving her lived on the Quincy location. She was 53 years old. MARRIAGE 1890 Feb 7 at Detroit, Michigan at the home of the brides parents Mr. James NANCARROW wed Miss Lulu ORTH. Mr. Charles ORTH, brother of the bride was best man. He has been a citizen of Houghton County over 30 years. MARRIAGE 1890 May 31 At St Joseph's Church in Hancock, Mr. James BARKEL wed Miss Mary RENTOUBACK at the parsonage. BIRTH & MARRIAGE 1889 Aug 17 Mr. S. POLGLASE of Red Mountain, Colorado wed Miss S. M. M. EUSTUCE of HELSTON, CORNWALL, ENGLAND in Houghton. On 1890 June 1 a son was born in Houghton, Michigan . NEWS ITEM 1890 Aug 11 Abram UREN was sentences to 20 days in the County jail for being drunk and disorderly. MARRIAGES 1890 Aug 14 At the Huron mine, Mr. James TRATHEN and Miss Mary L. CLIMO. 1890 Aug 16 At Portage lake Methodist parsonage, Mr George TRIM wed Miss Jennie HOCKING. DEATH NOT IN HOUGHTON COUNTY RECORDS 1890 Aug 16 Capt. Thomas D. JAMES died near Hodges foundry. He was well known in the mining industry. He died of apoplexy. He was born in 1832 in CORNWALL, ENGLAND. In 1856 he emigrated to Dodgeville, Wisconsin. He came to Rockland, Michigan in 1861. He worked at various mines and retired to Duluth. He was at Portage Lake on business when he died. He was buried at Rockland, Mich. He leaves a widow and 8 children. He was buried in the Hancock cemetery. DEATH 1891 Jany 19 Mrs. Margaret CURRY, wife of James CURRY, died at her home in Hancock of consumption. She left four children all whom live in Hancock. On daughter is the wife of Mr. Samuel MERRITT of Dollar Bay. She was buried at Calumet cemetery. NEWS ITEM 1891 Jany 29 Mr. Henry PAULL, connected with the Sudbury Mine in Ontario, Canada, visited Calumet last week. MARRIAGE 1891 Feb 21 At the Methodist Episcopal parsonage at Hancock, Mr. Edward TINGSTAD wed Mrs. Bessie PERRY, both of Calumet. DEATHS 1891 Mch 1 - The 8 year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas VIAL of Atlantic mine died. 1891 May 19 Mr. Wm SMITH, aged 83 years, who has been a resident of Houghton for eleven years, died today. He was born in CORNWALL, ENGLAND. 1891 June 4 The body of Mr. Wm EDWARDS, who died in Butte, Montana 1891 May 30, arrived last night by train and was taken to Opeechee for burial. NEWS ITEM 1891 June 23 Messrs. James and Lincoln BURGAN, of Lake Linden, have returned from the University of Michigan, at Lansing, to spend the summer. 1891 June 24 - Miss Daisy GLANVILLE of Lake Linden, returned from spending the year at the normal school. 1891 June 23 Mrs. Charles TREZISE and her son, Frank JAMES of Hancock, arrived home on the steamer, India, from Albion, Michigan where Frank was attending secretarial school and will graduate this year. 1891 July 25 - The annual meeting of the Sons of St George for the Upper Peninsula will take place. The Vice Chairmen of the event will be Edgar RASHLEIGH and Joseph F. SYMONDS. 1891 July 8 The Misses May INGRAM and Anne MARTYN and Messrs.
