Mr. Hollow was called as a juror in the Federal Court. 1896 July 23 Mr. Arthur NOBLE of Butte City, Montana is visiting the home of Capt. and Mrs. Johnson VIVIAN of East Houghton. 1896 July 21 Mr. and Mrs. Will HOSKING, Mr. John HOSKING and Mrs. Thomas WILLIAMS returned from Michigamee where they attended the funeral of their nephew, Wm POTE. DEATH 1896 July 20 Mrs. John PIERCE of Dollar Bay died today. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. POLGLASE of Atlantic Mine .She was 27 yrs old. and born at Atlantic Mine. DEATH Mr. and Mrs. Will HOSKING of Coulterville , California are mourning the loss of their little son Dick, who died on 1896 July 14. MARRIAGES On 1896 July 25 Mr. Richard EDWARDS of Franklin Mine and Miss Emma FOOTE of Hurontown will be married at the Houghton Methodist parsonage. 1896 July 21 Mr. Barney FLANAGAN wed Miss Ethel M. ELDRED at Justice BRAND'S office. They both are of Calumet. 1896 July 21 Mr. Fred SWENSON of Hancock wed Miss Annie TAUBE of Houghton were married at Houghton. Mr. Alfred JAMES was best man and Miss Ida EBMAN was the bridesmaid. DEATHS 1896 July 22 Mrs. Marmaduke TREBILCOCK died at her Houghton home. She was born in LUDGVAN, CORNWALL, ENGLAND in 1845. When a young woman she came with her parents to Keewenaw County. In Spring of 1865 she married to Mr Trebilcock at the Cliff Mine. Soon after that they moved to Shullsberg, Wisconsin where they engaged in farming and alternated living there and in the Copper Country. For the past 6 years they have lived in Houghton. They had 8 children, 4 of them survives her, 3 sons and 1 daughter, Marmaduke Jr, John H., Thomas and Elizabeth Jane. Also her husband brother and sisters mourn her. 1896 July 24 Wm NORTHY died at his sisters home, Mrs. Philip PEARCE of West Hancock, he was born and raised in Houghton and was 30 years old. He worked for years at the Sturgeon River Lumber Company in Hancock. He was buried at Forest Hill Cemetery, Houghton. MARRIAGES 1896 July 24 Dr. Robert NEWELL of Omaha, Nebraska wed Miss Nina MILDON in Houghton. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John MILDON of West Houghton. 1896 July 24 Dr A. F. FISCHER wed Miss Mame SLONAKER at her home, in South Lake Linden DEATHS 1896 July 12 Mrs. Alois HUSS died quietly and she was 61 years old. She was born in Nassau, Prussia in 1835 .She came to America in 1851 and landed at Eagle River. In 1853 she wed Francis MAYWORM to whom 5 children were born and one, Frank C., is living in Chicago. In 1869 Mr. MAYWORM died and she married Mr HUSS in 1872. They had 3 children. George, John and Libbie, who with their father mourn her. She was buried in Forest Hill Cemetery in Houghton. NEWS ITEM Mr. Will HOOPER, has been visiting his brother, Richard T. of Houghton, will return to his home in Great Falls, Montana. PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, NEWSPAPER HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN contd DEATH 1896 Aug 1 Thomas C. HARBOTTLE,Captain of the steam barge, Havana, died while the boat was lying at the Quincy dock. On July 30 he was taken violently ill. The body was taken to Toronto, Canada, by his brother, Neville, where the internment will take place. He was to be married this trip and his betrothed and his mother was on the boat at the time of death. MARRIAGE 1896 July 31 at L'.Anse, Mr. L. B. ARMSTRONG of Baraga wed Miss Alice BLANKENHORN at the home of the brides parents. NEWS ITEMS 1896 Aug 5 Mr. John DIXON, one of the pioneers of Houghton, but now a resident of Springfield, Missouri, is visiting friends here. DEATH 1896 Aug 1 Appleton R. RICHEY died in Houghton at age 51 years. He was born in Dresden, Ontario, Canada 1845 Jany 9. At age 16 he left Canada for Port Huron for 10 years. He went to Marquette for 3 years learning the barber business there. He than came to Houghton. In 1869 he married Hannah F. PARIS and they had 4 children. She died in 1879. On Oct 7, 1889 he wed Mrs. Sarah A. RICKMAN of Dresden, Ontario, Canada, they had 3 children who survive him. One, Mrs. Lulu JOHNS also his daughters of prior marriage, Mrs. Wm WARREN, Mrs. Cara JAMES and son Appleton R. survive him. He was buried at Forest Hill Cemetery, Houghton. MARRIAGE 1896 AUG 8 At Jacobsville, Mr. Charles ASIAlA wed Miss Hilda C. TORBOlA. DEATH 1896 Aug 12 Mrs. Dorothy SOBUlLTE died at her home at Atlantic Mine at the ripe old age of 95 years (quoted from newspaper). She was buried in Lakeside Cemetery and the services were held at the German Lutheran Church in Hancock. MARRIAGE 1896 Aug 17 Mr. Joseph LANGlOIS wed Miss Angelinma POISSON at St Ignatius Church, Houghton. NEWS ITEM 1896 Aug 25 About a month ago. Mrs. J. D. JEFFERY and family, wbo left Houghton for Mexico to join her husband, a superintendant of some mining properties, arrived home again today. The family went as far as Chihuahua but owing to the heat of the climate they were unable to stand it and advised to return to Houghton. Mr. JEFFERY will finish his work by December and return to Houghton. DEATH 1896 Aug 21 Mrs. Margaret HANLEY died at her home in Hancock, aged 85 years old. She had lived there for a great many years. MARRIAGE 1896 Aug 26 Mr. Hugh McKENZIE wed Miss Lillie TREVIlLIAN at the home of the brides parents, at Lake Larium. The bride formerly lived at Ripley. MARR. in Houghton. The couple will go to Aylsmer, Ontario to live. DEATH 1896 Sept 2 The funeral of Joseph LIGHT, father of Messrs. Wm J. & J. C. of Calumet and Richard D. LIGHT of Hancock, was held today. He lived in the Copper country for a great number of years and lived in Lake Linden the past 23 years. MARRIAGES 1896 Sept 1 Mr. Samuel BARKELL wed Miss Emma HOFER at Father Keller's home in Hancock. 1896 Sept 29 Cards are out announcing the wedding of Benjamin T. BARRY and Miss Mary Estelle SHELDON at Trinity Church, Houghton. 1896 Sept 5 Oskar Arvid NIEMI wed Miss Hilder Maria FRAKL, both of Quincy, at the Finnish Lutheran Church. DEATH 1896 Sept 4 James FURNESS, 16 years old, was killed in the Wolverine Mine, he was buried today. He lived at one time in Hurontown with his parents. MARRIAGE 1896 Sept 15 Mr. Frank W. PRESTON wed Miss Edith SCHNEIDERHAN of Red Jacket., were married at the home of Mr .Alfred LORD of Hancock. DEATH 1896 Sept 11 Ira J. WHITNEY, travelling salesman for Smith & Wallace of Chicago, committed suicide at Forest Hill Cemetery. He bought a gun in Houghton and used it to kill himself. He was born in 1839 at North Adams, Massachussetts. He came to Houghton in 1863 for his first sales here. A widow and 3 children survive him. NEWS ITEM 1896 Sept 22 Mrs. Amelia HARRIS of East Houghton celebrated her 64th birthday with 25 of her lady friends. MARRIAGE 1896 Sept 22 Mr. Joseph GOODMAN wed Miss Delia MIRON at St Ignatius Church, Houghton. DEATH 1896 Sept 24 The funeral of Frank STONE, son of Judge and Mrs. J. W. STONE of Marquette, who died suddenly in Riverside, California, was held in Marquette yesterday. MARRIAGES 1896 Sept 22 Mr. Con M. SULLIVAN wed Miss Mary SHEA at St Patrick's Church, Hancock. 1896 Sept 23 Dr T. F. FARRAND wed Miss Jesssie McNAUGHTON at the Calumet hotel, Calumet. They will live in Detroit. Mr. Victor ENGSTROM of Red Jacket, was a witness NEWS ITEM 1896 Oct Mr. Wm J. RASHLEIGH, a graduate of the Michigan Mining School, Houghton, is now employed at the engineering office of Boston and Montana Mining Company, Great Falls, Montana. DEATHS 1896 Sept 26 Mrs. Charles RUELLE, Sr. died at her home at Sturgeon River, aged 73 years. She had lived in Houghton County a good many years. Her funeral was held at the Chassell Catholic Church and she was buried in Houghton Forest Hill Cemetery. A husband and nine children survive her, Charles J., Peter and Eli of Houghton; and John, Napoleon, George, and Archie of Sturgeon River: Mrs. Peter DESTRAMP of Paradise and Mrs. Theophilus CHARBONEAU of CHASSELL. 1896 Oct 2 Mrs. Mary FERRON, aged 87 years, died at her home in Hancock, She was buried at Lakeside Cemetery. She was an aunt of Judge Thomas DOOLING and R. C. FINNEGAN of Norway, Michigan 1896 Oct 2 Wm WEL TON died at West Hancock, aged 68 years old. He was buried at Forest Hill Cemetery, Houghton. 1896 Oct 2 George C.SHELDON son the late Ranson and Theresa M. SHELDON.was born in Walworth County, Wisconsin 1843 Dec 27, was murdered by being shot. He was buried at Forest Hill Cemetery, Houghton. It is supposed that Mr. Felix DEMONTHIER was the murderer. His body was found in Portage lake with a bullet wound in it. He was buried Oct 8, 1896 .He was married 1867 Apr 17 to Miss Mary EDWARDS and 2 daughters mourn him. MARRIAGES 1896 Oct 7 Mr. Joseph KOHLAAS wed Miss Tillie WATSON daughter of Mr. W. C. WATSON.. The marriage was performed at the home of the brides parents in Osceola. 1896 Oct 7 At Atlantic Mine, Mr. Will TAMBLYN wed Miss Josephine POLGLASE. DEATHS 1896 Oct 24 John SHELLMAN died at his Hancock home .He had lived at Red Ridge since the Atlantic Stamp Mill was placed in that area. He went to the funeral of his son in law and being exposed to the weather caught cold and died. 1896 Nov 4 - The death of Michael CHRISTAN occurred at Hurontown. He died of consumption and was 67 years old. MARRIAGE 1896 Nov 3 at the Tamarack Mine, Mr. John CLIMO wed Miss Bessie ROBERTS they left for Philadelphia where they may live. The couple were old residents at Atlantic mine and were connected with the Methodist Church since 1887. She was buried in the Forest Hill Cemetery in Houghton. 1896 Nov 7 The sudden death of Ferdinand BUCK occurred at Houghton. He was 30 years old and leaves a wife and an adopted daughter. 1896 Nov 6 The death of Mrs. Eliza MOYLE at the Houghton home of her daughter, Mrs. Wm H. HOSKING. She was 80 years old. Two daughters Mrs. Wm H. HOSKING and Mrs. Elizabeth MOYLE of Hancock and a son Wm H. MOYLE of Quincy mourn her. 1896 Nov 5 Mr. and Mrs. Samuel EDDY, of Lake Linden, two year old daughter, Mildred died. She was buried Saturday morning, Nov 7 . 1896 Nov 5 The 8 month child of Mr. and Mrs. Albert JEWELL died. The funeral was on Nov 6. MARRIAGES 1896 Nov 19 Mr. Charles E. SWEET wed Miss May KERRIDGE at the home of the brides mother in Hancock. 1896 Nov 7 In Chicago, Mr. T. L. CHADBOURNE, Jr, son of Mr. and Mrs .T. L. CHADBOURNE of Houghton wed Miss Emily Rockland CRANE. The bride's father is president of the Crane Elevator Company. DEATH 1896 Nov 7 John PISHE, aged 30, died at his Lake Linden Home. He was buried in the Lake Linden Cemetery. He leaves a wife and 5 children. MARRIAGE 1896 Nov 12 Mr. John D. RYAN of Denver, Colorado wed Miss Nettie GARDNER at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. D. SHELDON of West Houghton. Miss Nellie GARDNER, sister of the bride, was bridesmaid and the best man was Mr. John CUDDIHY. They will live in Denver. DEATH 1896 Nov 14 Mr. Thomas SMART died in Hancock and he was 56 years old. He died of pnumonia. He was born at Bristol, Gloucester, England, and came to America with his parents 1850 May 1. They came to Lake Superior and located at the Nortwest mine. Three years later they went to Grant County, Wisconsin. Returning to Lake Superior he went to Keewenaw County as a miner. In 1879 he came to Houghton and established the Lake View House in Hancock. He was married 1865 Sept 7 to Miss Mary S. BENNEY. The wife and 2 children, Ernestine M. and Thomas M. survive him. MARRIAGE 1896 Nov 14 Mr. John MARKS wed Miss Emily BREWER, they were wed at the brides parents home in Quincy. PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE NEWSPAPER, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN, contd. DEATH 1896 Nov 15 After a 4 weeks illness, Miss Mary TOURVILLE, died at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank TOURVILLE. She was 21 years of age. The funeral service was held on Nov 17 from St Joseph's church. MARRIAGE 1896 Nov 19 Mr. Walter B. JACKS wed Miss Anne LUTEY. Both are of Calumet. NEWS ITEMS 1896 Nov 18 John LUKE of Iron Mountain is visiting his mother, Mrs. Ann BAWDEN at Calumet. 1896 Nov 19 newspaper Those from the County of CORNWALL, ENGLAND must know that the coming winter in CORNWALL is to be a time of severe trial. The depression in the mining districts has reached an acute stage. The price of tin has been gradually dropping for many months past and it is lower now than it has been for 20 years. Consequently miners are leaving CORNWALL by the thousands. Since January last over 1000 miners from Redruth and Camborne have migrated to South Africa and other Colonies. In fact CORNWALL is fast losing the best of the brain and muscle. Last year, 1895, no less than 2086 Cornishmen left for South Africa alone. DEATHS 1896 Nov 20 Patrick CONNOLLY died in South Lake Linden. He was an old settler who came to Keewenaw area 1860 and remained there till 1884 .He than came to the Tamarack and stayed till January this year. He was 55 years old and his two sons, James and Michael came from Anaconda, Montana to attend the funeral. 1896 Nov 29 The funeral of Baptiste TOUPIN of Torch Lake, took place on Nov 26. He was 45 years old and left a wife and 11 children. 1896 Nov 29 Miss Jennie HOSKING of Portage Lake area, died after a short illness, of diptheria. Her family mourns her. (No age given). 1896 Nov Alex. RHEAUL T fell from a ladder, a distance of some 20 feet, at the Dollar Bay smelting works. He had injuries which caused his death some hours later. MARRIAGE 1896 Dec 9 Mr. James Agustus CLOSE, Jr. wed Helen Katherine HODGSON at the home of the brides parents, Mr. and Mrs. John C. HODGSON, of East Houghton. DEATHS 1896 Dec 4 The body of Miss Hannah SULLIVAN arrived from the Traverse City Insane Asylum for burial at the Eagle Harbor Cemetery, Keewenaw. 1896 Dec 8 Mrs. James TREMBATH died at her Lake Linden Home. She was 73 years old and leaves a husband and a grown up family to mourn her. NEWS ITEM 1896 Dec 8 Leonard LEIGH left for the gold fields of South Africa to accept a good position there. He was a carpenter and lived at Portage Lake for the last 25 years. 1896 Dec 14 Roland H. BRELSFORD died in East Houghton at the home of step-daughter, Mrs. E. F. DOUGLASS. He leaves a widow, who lost her sight many years ago and 2 children, Mr. Ed HITCHCOCK and Mrs E. F. DOUGLASS He was born in Philadelphia on 1830 May 11. He came to the Upper Peninsula and worked at the Ridge mine and afterwards worked in the dock business in Ontonagon. He came to Hancock 1861 and was a store clerk. He had charge of the dock business for J. A. CLOSE Co for many years. He became Collector for US Customs. He was assistant superintendent of the Mineral Range at Hancock. 1896 Dec 10 - Mrs. Beatrice PHILLIPS, wife of Fred PHILLIPS, died from a weak heart at Calumet. She left a husband and one child. 1896 Dec 11 Mr. Wm H. RICHARDS died at his Calumet home on Mine Street. He was 44 years old and left a wife and 6 children to mourn him. NEWS ITEM 1896 Dec 16 Mrs. GILES of CORNWALL, ENGLAND who has been visiting friends and relatives this past month, left for CORNWALL today with her 3 grandchildren who will live with her in CORNWALL in the future. It will be remembered that Mrs. Alfred GILES, of Laurium died not long ago and Mr .Alfred Giles could not care for the 3 children. DEATH 1896 Dec 11 Peter ANDRE died of cancer of the stomach at his Calumet home and was aged 64 years. He worked first at the Franklin mine and from 1874 worked for Calumet and Hecla mine. He leaves a widow and one daughter, Mrs. E. STEHLIN of Lake Linden. The funeral was in charge of the German Aid Society. 1896 Dec 13 Mr. Desire DESROSLER died in his Calumet home, he was about 54 years old. He was a mason at the Osceola mine. He leaves a widow and a large family. 1896 Dec 13 Mrs. J. KAUFMAN died at her home in Lake Linden. She was 63 years old and leaves two daughters, Mrs. Dr PATTERSON of Manistique and Mrs. Charles KRANZ. 1896 Dec 19 A trammer in the Franklin mine named Matti TORVO was killed by a large rock falling on his head. He was single. 1896 Dec 18 The death of Mrs. Elizabeth BADGE in her Calumet home. She suffered from heart trouble. Mrs. Thomas ROWELL came from Iron Mountain to attend the funeral. MARRIAGE 1896 Dec 31 at the Houghton home of Mr. and Mrs. Matt HANG, Mr .Ed HAAS wed Miss Lizzie VOGHT .The bridesmaid was Miss Lizzie HANG, sister of the bride, and the best man was I. M. HAAS, brother of the groom. The bride is the sister of Mrs. Matt HANG. DEATHS 1896 Dec 30 A Finnish trammer, John MATALA, was killed at the Wolverine mine. He attempted to jump into a loaded skip and his body hit a timber, killing him instantly. He was 27 years old and leaves a wife and 2 children in Finland. 1897 Jany 3 - The members of the German Aid Society attended in a body the funeral of Carl FIEN of Osceola .He died of typhoid fever at the age of 29 years. He leaves two children who have no parents now as the mother died two years ago. 1897 Jany 3 The funeral of Mrs. Henry SCHNEIDER of Houghton was held today. She was 59 years old and leaves a husband, 2 daughters, and 2 sons to mourn her. 1896 Dec 31 Mrs. Mary SHEA died at her Calumet home of typhoid fever. Her maiden name was Mary EGAN and she came to Portage Lake with her parents as a child. In 1872 she married Mr. Pat SHEA, sheriff at that time.. Her husband and 7 children mourn her.
