He leaves two children who have no parents now as the mother died two years ago. 1897 Jany 3 The funeral of Mrs. Henry SCHNEIDER of Houghton was held today. She was 59 years old and leaves a husband, 2 daughters, and 2 sons to mourn her. 1896 Jany 7 George GAMSHLING died this morning and he was 82 years old. The funeral is held up awaiting his son, Wm, from Great Falls, Montana. A Mrs. Amelia GAMSHLING and a large family mourn him. NEWS ITEM 1897 Jany 12 The well known CORNISH wrestler John ROWETT, came from CORNWALL, ENGLAND to Calumet to reside permanently. He has taken a position with George ALLEN. MARRIAGE 1897 Jany 11 Wm KINGSTON wed Miss Maggie KELLY. Both are of Calumet. They were married at the parsonage of St Patrick's Church, Hancock. NEWS ITEM 1896 Jany 14 Friends of Richard PASCOE state he is now in Cuba fighting on the side of the insurgents. He was in Company D, 5th Regiment and a member of the Tamarack blacksmith shop. MARRIAGES 1897 Jany 12 at Lake Linden, Hector MORRISON wed Miss Belle McLEOD, at the home of the bride. 1897 Jany 19 Mr. Paul BEDERD wed Miss Georgina LA VELLE at Lake Linden. 1897 Jany 18 Rev Henry HARRIS of Colorado wed Miss Martha JENKINS, at the Lake Linden home of, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph JENKINS, the bride's parents. They left for Butte, Montana to live. DEATHS 1897 Jany 17 The remains of the late Richard PAULL, brother of accountant, Stephen PAULL of the Merchants and Miners Bank, arrived here today. The deceased was brought here to Calumet from Florence, Wisconsin for burial. 1897 Jany ---An Old time resident of Portage Lake, Mr. Wm L. NORTHUP, died recently at Crown Point, Indiana. He was 73 years of age. 1897 Jany 11 Word was received of the death of Mrs. Joseph SCHULER of Great Falls, Montana. The remains were brought to Hancock and the funeral was held on 1897 Jany 17 from the German Lutheran Church. 1897 Jany 17 Miss Mary TREANOR, daughter of Mrs. TREANOR and sister of James TREANOR, died of consumption. She was 35 years old. She came to Houghton 2 years ago with her mother, from Ireland. She had not been well for years. MARRIAGE 1897 Jany 19 Mr John C. RICHARDS formerly of Franklin Mine and now of Butte, Montana wed Miss Ada M. LEY of Ripley, Michigan. After the marriage they left for Butte, Montana to live. DEATH 1896 Jany 16. Mrs. Henry DRITTLER, Sr. of Quincy Street, Hancock died at her home. She was born in Germany 1833 June 21 and came to the United States in June 1852. In July 1852 she married Mr. Henry DRITTLER at the Cliff Mine and it was the first marriage at Cliff mine. She leaves a husband, 3 sons and 2 daughters. MARRIAGE 1897 Jany 20 Mr. Napoleon BEDARD wed Miss Georgina LA V ALLE at Lake Linden. DEATH 1897 Jany 19 At Calumet, John H. STEVENS, at the Tamarack location, died of diphtheria. MARRIAGES 1897 Jany 26 Mr. Wm KEIR wed Miss Kate DONOVAN at Lake Linden parsonage of St Cecelia's Church. 1897 Jany 27 County Treasurer Isaac W. FRIMODIG wed Miss Sophie M. LAND. They were married at the home of the bride's parents by Rev A. L. HEIDEMAN of the Finnish Lutheran Church. 1897 Jany 25 Mr. John BANDITINI wed Miss Ella MARTIN at the Calumet German Lutheran Church. 1897 Feb 4 Dr Wm P. SCOTT and Miss Frances A. HANNA left on today's noon train for Marquette to be wed there tonight. DEATH 1897 Jany 31 John SULLIVAN died at the Franklin of consumption, The body was shipped to Bridgeport, Connecticut where he came from several weeks ago. NEWS ITEM 1897 Feb 4 Mr. Wm GEORGE is visiting his parents in Calumet and will return to Butte, Montana today. DEATHS 1896 Feb 6 Mrs. Elizabeth MATHEWS, an old pioneer resident of Houghton, died peacefully in her sleep. She was born in Devonshire, England 1818 Oct 21 and came to the United States in 1861. She has lived in Houghton for 36 years. She was buried in Forest Hill Cemetery. 1896 Feb 7 Will McDONALD, 27 years old died in Houghton. He was born and raised in Houghton. He was a graduate of the Mining School. He was buried in Forest Hill Cemetery. He was an inspector on the Portage Ship canal. MARRIAGES 1897 Feb 9 At Lake Linden, Mr. Thomas PEARCE wed Miss Rachael STUTTER, at the home of the brides parents. 1897 Feb 16 John D. COULTON wed Miss Edith HARTMAN at the home of the brides parents, Mr. and Mrs. Gotleib HARTMAN, in Houghton. DEATHS 1897 Mch 4 Three miners were killed by an explosion at the Cundy Mine at Quinnesec, they are-- Albert JEWETT, married; Richard LUKE and Benjamin RICHARDS both unmarried. 1897 Mch 9 Capt. Richard UREN of Ripley died, he was another pioneer. He was born 1835 Jany 10 in CORNWALL, ENGLAND and was 62 years old at his death. He spent 4 years in California and 36 years in Houghton area. He leaves a widow and a son, Wm JR. and a sister in CORNWALL, ENGLAND. He will be buried at Forest Hill Cemetery in Houghton. 1897 Mch 6 Mrs. Frank MAJOR of West Houghton died from cancer. She was 31 years old and a member of Grace Methodist Church. Four children, the oldest 7 years old, are left to mourn her. 1897 Mch 17 Mrs. Grace NICHOLS at the home of her son-in-law, Mr. .A. N. BAUDIN in Hancock. She was mother of Mr. George NICHOLS; Mrs. J. F. HAMBITZER; Mrs. A. N. BAUDIN; and Mrs. John NANKERVIS. The service will be held from the Hancock Methodist church. NEWS ITEM 1897 Mch 16 Wm ARGALL of Ishpeming, Michigan was in Houghton for a few days on business . DEATH 1897 Mch 22 Mary BRESNABAN, age 16, died of inflammation of the lungs. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Patrick BRESNABAN of Houghton. NEWS ITEM 1897 March 25 Leaving behind a bride of two weeks and a number of creditors, Peter DEBEMARDL of Calumet, left last week for parts unknown. He was an owner of a saloon on Fifth Street. MARRIAGE 1897 March 23 Mr. Alfred OXFORD wed Miss Bessie GREY at Houghton. Methodist Church. DEATH 1897 March 21 Mrs. Sarah WILLIAMS died in Lake Linden, she was 79 years old. MARRIAGE 1897 Mch 27 At Lake Linden, Mr. James A. TREBILCOCK wed Miss Emily COOMBE. DEATH 1897 March 21 Wm H. EDWARDS died in South Lake Linden. He came to America in 1853 from HELSTON, CORNWALL, ENGLAND and located at the Cliff mine where he worked for many years. For the past 20 years he hadn't done very much. He was 70 years old and leaves a widow, 4 sons, and 4 daughters. He was buried at Forest Hill Cemetery, Houghton. MARRIAGE 1897 March 25 Mr. Arthur RULE wed Miss Katie WEARNE daughter of Capt. and Mrs. Absolom WEARNE was held at the home of the bride. DEATHS 1897 April 4 Gustav LaBIATL died of pneumonia, he was 47 years old, he was buried at the Lake Linden Cemetery. MARRIAGE 1897 Apr 5 Mr. Norman MacDONALD wed Miss Minnie E. KING at the Calumet home of the bride. DEATHS 1897 April 3 Eric NEIMI and John DALVINSART were killed by an explosion under-ground in the Calumet mine. 1897 April 2 Joseph LAROTBELLE who worked for the Calumet & Hecla Mining Company for 25 years, died at his Calumet home. He was born in Jollette, Quebec, Canada and was 43 years old. A widow and 10 children mourn him. NEWS ITEM 1897 April 15 John GOLDSWORTHY left today for Iron Mountain, Michigan. DEATH 1897 April 22 - The remains of Richard POOLE who died April 14, 1897 was shipped to New York for burial. MARRIAGE 1897 April; 29 Mr. Wm JOLL Y wed Miss Carrie HUNTLEY at Osceola, Saturday evening. DEATH 1897 May 6 Joseph JENKINS died in his South Lake Linden Home last Wednesday, he was 61 years old. He leaves widow, son and 5 daughters to mourn him. DEATHS 1897 May 6 The death of Mrs. Thomas FITZPATRICK occurred on Saturday of appendicitis. The body was forwarded to Canton, Ohio for burial. 1897 May 6 The remains of Willie STUCKMEYER was brought to Houghton for burial from Escanaba, Michigan. He was 28 years old and he was buried in Forest Hill Cemetery in Houghton. MARRIAGE 1897 May 13 Mr. Thomas SULLIVAN of Houghton wed Miss Kate DUNN of Ripley on Tuesday at St Patrick's church. DEATHS 1897 MA Y 13 Eugene LYNCH died Saturday at The Quincy , at the age of 42 years. A widow and 3 children are left to mourn him. 1897 May 13 - James ROSS died Sunday, May 9 at his home in Hancock , He was an early settler having worked at the Quincy mine over 40 years. He was a Veteran of the Civil War. 1897 May 13 - The remains of the late Capt. W.H. BENNETT were laid to rest in the old cemetery on Monday. He was a member of the Sons of St George he was probably a Cornishman). 1897 May 20 - Mrs. W. H. EDWARDS's funeral was yesterday, She was 80 years old and was buried in the Houghton cemetery .Her husband died about 6 weeks ago. 1897 May 27 - The funeral of the late Mrs. Wm JORDAN who died at Great Falls, Montana Saturday morning, was held yesterday morning from, Hancock German Lutheran Church. She was 86 years old and died of pneumonia. She was well known here and spent many years here. Two sons Wm and August accompanied the body to Houghton from Montana. The deceased was laid to rest next to her husband in the Houghton cemetery. 1897 May 27 - A timber man, Peter ROETHE, a young man was killed in Hecla mineshaft No 4, yesterday morning. His father was killed two years ago in a mine accident, so he was the sole support of his mother and 5 young brothers and sisters. NEWS ITEM 1897 May 27 Mrs. Richard COLVIN and family left Jacobsville, Mich. to go to Sandstone Minnesota where they will live. DEATH 1897 June 3 Paul MONDOR, aged 65 years, died of Bright's disease at his Hancock home. Internment was made at the Hancock cemetery. MARRIAGE 1897 June 3 Two colored people were wed in Houghton on Tuesday evening, Mr. L. M. BENNETTS wed Mrs Cora JONES, sister of Mrs. Sarah RICHEY, at whose house the ceremony was held. NEWS ITEM 1897 June 3 Mr. and Mrs. John THOMAS and son, Walter and Mr. and Mrs. W. James WILLS left for CORNWALL, ENGLAND for a 3 month vacation. They are of Calumet. MARRIAGE 1897 June 10 Mr. Ed PENBERTHY wed Miss Delia GULLBAULT at the Lake Linden home of the brides parents, Mr. and Mrs. H. 0. GULLBAULT. DEATH 1897 June 10 Mr. Ferdinand WISSING died in Ontonagon Friday. His son Joseph, who worked for the Gazette newspaper, arrived too late before his father had died. The deceased came here straight from Holland 35 years ago he was 69 years old. NEWS ITEM 1897 June 10 Mr. and Mrs. Joseph RASHLEIGH and son, Charles, of Great Falls, Montana are visiting friends here two months. NEWS ITEMS 1897 June 17 Mr. and Mrs. R..J. OATES and son of Butte City, MONTANA arrived in Hancock on the Ship INDIA, last Friday. They are visiting at the home of Mr. and Mrs. I. J. TRUSCOTT. Mr. Oates is one of the owners of the Weekly Tribune, of BUTTE. MARRIAGE 1897 June 21 At St Ignatius Church, Tuesday morning, Mr. Nicholas BRITZ wed Miss Mary MARTIN. DEATHS 1897 June 21 The death of Mrs. W. H. BENNETTS of the Franklin Mine, happened on Saturday morning at her Houghton home. About 1 month ago Capt. Bennnetts, her husband, died and now a family of 8 children, all under 18 years are left without any parents. 1897 June 21 Mrs. John FONKEY died at her West Hancock home on Saturday. She was an old resident of this county. She was 57 years old and leaves a widower and 12 children. She was buried at the Houghton Forest Hill cemetery. 1897 June 21 Dr I.M. RHODES of the Franklin mine died Monday morning after a 3 months siege of paralysis. He came to the Franklin mine 28 years ago as the mine doctor. MARRIAGE 1897 June 21 At Lake linden, Mr. E. H. He was born in Italy, and came to America in 1864 and to Lake Superior in 1872. He was 63 years old and well known in this community, MARRIAGES 1897 July 8 At Houghton, Mr. Fred SCHUBERT wed Miss Susie RASHLEIGH on Tuesday morning. 1897 July 15 At Calumet, Mr. John BASTIAN wed Miss Florence May JONES at the brides home. 1897 July 22 At Houghton, Dr E. B. NELSON wed Miss Amy MAJOR at her brothers home. They are going to live in Chassell. DEATH 1897 July 29 EDWARD SIMMER died Thursday from asphyxiation in the Quincy mine. The funeral was held from the Hancock Methodist church. He leaves a wife and two children and was an old and well-known resident. MARRIAGE 1897 July 29 Mr. Herman HASS of Calumet wed Miss Alice DUNN of Houghton at the home of the bride's parents. They will live in Red Jacket. DEATHS 1897 Aug 12 Harry S. BEESLEY died at his Houghton home on Montezuma Street, on Tuesday. He was 75 years old. He was born in Oxford, England 1823 May 2 and was educated in England. At age 16, in 1839 he crossed from Liverpool to New York and went to Ohio where he stayed till 1846 and than came to Lake Superior as a mineral explorer. He learned surveying in Ontonagon and that was his life long work. He left a wife and 6 children.,--3 daughters and 3 sons-Harry, Joseph and George 1897 Aug 26 Mathew M. MORALES died Wednesday after 69 years of active life. He was born in Springfield, Massachussets and came to Lake Superior in 1840, locating at the Cliff Mine. Two years he moved to Hancock where he erected a saw mill. He eventually had a saw mill and sash and blind factory at Ripley. In 1887 he married his 2nd wife Miss Alice DEAN. There are 8 children all grown up, they are Milo, Mat; both of Hancock; and six daughters-Mrs. James ALLEN of Hancock; Mrs. BALLANTYNE of Lead, South Dakota; Mrs. SCHILTE of Dollar Bay; Mrs. E. T. BUSH of Indianapolis AND Mrs. MICHELL and Miss Nellie. MARRIAGE 1897 AUG 26 at Calumet, Mr .Joseph CHAMPION wed Miss Mable JAMES at the home of the brides parent on Saturday. DEATHS 1897 Aug 26 Mr. Samuel DAVEY died on Monday. Mrs. Davey died recently and then their daughter, Beatrice, died after her. Leaving an only son, Albert of the family. The father was 60 years old, he died of a cold. 1897 Sept 2 The remains of Miss Heniretta McDONALD, who died in Calumet Tuesday, were shipped to Kincardin, Ontario, Canada for burial. 1897 Sept 9 Thomas D, MASON died Saturday in Houghton, he was 63 years old. He leaves a widow and 6 children. 1897 Sept 9 Wm CARLINE an old Hancock Resident died today He was a machinist by trade and kept a shop on Quincy Street. 1897 Sept 16 James VOETCH died Tuesday in his Houghton home. He was 77 years old, his wife died about 2 years ago. He was born in Germany in 1821. In 1844 he came to America, staying one year in Cleveland, Ohio. He than came to Lake Superior where he worked for 5 years. He went back to Cleveland to marry and return to Keewenaw area to work. His widow and 6 children survive him. He was a cooper by trade. MARRIAGE 1897 Sept 30 At Hancock, Mr. T.Greeley FOX wed Miss Susie BOWDEN of Hancock on Thursday at the Methodist Church. DEATH 1897 Sept 30 John MICHELL died yesterday morning at the age of 75 years at his Houghton home. He will be buried at the Lakeside Cemetery, Calumet. He leaves a widow and several grown up sons and daughters. MARRIAGES 1897 Sept 30 Mr. Ed JAMES wed Miss Lillian JAMES at the bride's Calumet home. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Hugh JAMES. 1897 Sept 30 At Lake Linden, Mr. Frederick J. BRULE, son of Justice and Mrs. E. BRULE of Lake Linden wed Miss Florence BROUGHTON at the home brides parents Mr. and Mrs. James I. BROUGHTON of Walkerville. DEATH 1897 Oct 7 James TREMBATH died Sunday morning at his father's Lake Linden home. He was 50 years old. He was once clerk at the Cliff Mine and from there he became Justice of the Peace at Lake Linden till his death. He was buried at Lake View Cemetery at Calumet. A father, 3 brothers, Richard, Samuel and John and two sisters, Mrs. George PETERS and Mrs. James HOAR are left to mourn him. DEATH 1897 Oct 7 Mrs. Jennifer HOAR, another old time resident of Houghton died today in the early morning at her home. She was 83 years old. She will be buried at Forest Hill Cemetery, Houghton. She leaves one son, Wm B, HOAR and a daughter, Mrs. STURGIS . MARRIAGE 1897 Oct 7 Mr. Wm BERRYMAN wed Miss Bessie CURNOW of Tamarack, at the brides parents home on Saturday evening. DEATHS 1897 Oct 14 Mrs. Jane EDWARDS, one of the oldest residents of Houghton died at her home on Monday. She was born in Devonshire, England 1816 Oct 21. After her marriage, in Devon, to Capt. Richard EDWARDS, sailed to America, landing at Eagle River in the spring of 1850, coming to Houghton in 1853. She was the mother of 12 children; six are left to mourn her-- son- Thomas. W. EDWARDS; Mrs. Jane HUNT; Mrs. Eliza A. BLANDY; Mrs. Mary SHELDON; James P. EDWARDS and John EDWARDS. Internment will be held at Forest Hill Cemetery, Houghton. 1897 Oct 14 The funeral of Wm GLASSON, who fell 4,000 feet in the Red Jacket shaft in Calumet on Saturday. He was instantly killed. He was buried in Calumet cemetery. 1897 Oct 14 Mrs. John TOBIN died at her Yellow Jacket home on Monday evening. She died of cancer of the stomach and she was 52 years old. She leaves a husband, six grown up sons and one daughter. MARRIAGE 1897 Oct 21 at Calumet, Mr. Henry N. NEWTON wed Miss Grace P. MITCHELL, both of Calumet. NEWS ITEM 1897 Oct 21 Mr. and Mrs. Joseph PHILLIPS and Mrs. DOWNING have returned from their 4 month trip to CORNWALL, ENGLAND. DEATH 1897 Oct 28 Mr. Joseph HENNES died in Houghton October 22 1897 and be was born 1812 Oct 8 in SAALHAUSEN, GERMANY. When 22 years old he entered a business college in Detroit, Mich and stayed there til11867 when he came to Houghton to work for his brother, Mr. Louis Hennes owner of general merchandise store and finally became a partner. In 1875 he married Miss Elizabeth SCHEUERMANN, daughter of Phillip SCHEUERMANN, and was the father of 8 children. He was buried at Forest Hills Cemetery, Houghton .He left a widow, daughters, May and Angie and sons -Robert and Louis to mourn him. 1897 Oct 28 On Friday last, Mrs. H. W. JENKS of Houghton was called to the bedside of her father, Bela W. JENKS of St Clair, Michigan who died shortly. He was 73 years old. He was one of Michigans pioneers coming from Revolutionary stock. He was a member of the State Board of Education. DEATH 1897 Oct 28 An old resident of Hurontown, George ALSBAUGH, died Sunday morning from old age. He was 74 years old. A family of 7 grown up children survive him at Lake Linden, he was buried at Maple Hill Cemetery, Lake Linden. MARRIAGES 1897 Oct 28 This morning Mr. Edward GOVIN wed Miss Minnie FRUNETTE at Houghton St Ignatius Church. 1897 Oct 28 On Monday, Mr. Christopher HENDRA of Tamarack wed Mrs. THOMAS of Red Jacket (her Christian name was left off by the paper).They were both married for the 2nd time at Calumet. 1897 Oct 28 At Sacred Heart Church, Calumet yesterday morning, Mr. Joseph STROOK wed Miss Jennie O"CONNOR 1897 Oct 28 At Sacred Heart Church, Calumet, Tuesday noon Mr. Wm TERRIAN wed Miss Ulolia GOULETTE.
