All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/mi/mifiles.htm ************************************************ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: carrie Hill cjsnortland@yahoo.com March 8, 2005, 2:39 pm Mining Gazette The Houghton County sheriff's officers following an investigation into the death of John Hill 72 of Arcadian, who was found yesterday afternoon, fatally injured beside US-26 near the Portage Coal company's dock, between Ripley and Dollar Bay, Today reported that the man was struck by a car driven by Joseph Petit of Ripley. According to the sheriff's department after striking th man the vechile went across the road and turned over on the left side of the road. Petit claimed he did not see the man and did not know that he had struck him. Petit was treated at the St. Joseph Medical Center for a head injury suffered when his car turned over. Hill had been seen by employees at the Portage Coal and Dock company at 10:40 Wednesday morning. An ambulance was summoned to take Hill to the St. Joseph Medical center where death occurred at 1:45. He suffered leg fractures, multiple bruises and other injuries. He was born in Finland and came to this country as a young man, first making his home in Iron county and for the past few years in the copper country. Surviving are one son, Edward of Arcadian location a brother, Albanu Haapamaki, of Dearborn, and a sister, Mrs. Nurmi of New York. The remains are at the Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, arrangements are incomplete. Additional Comments: Coroner's Jury Returns Verdict In J.Hill death. After hearing the testimony of eight witneses a coroner's jury, which investigated the death of John Hill 72 of Arcadian, who was found fatally injured on Highway M-26 near the Portage Coal company's dock between Ripley and dollar Bay on the afternoon of aug 5, returned the following verdict after an inquest held yesterday afternoon in the court room at the court house, wth Coroner Norman Trezise of Calumet presiding.
