HURON DAILY TRIBUNE, Bad Axe, Huron County, Michigan Local Obituaries Week of October 3, 1999 Arthur Holland Arthur J. Holland, 93, of Sebewaing died Thursday, Oct. 7, 1999, at Huron Memorial Hospital in Bad Axe following a brief illness. He was born on April 19, 1906 in Kilmanagh, son of the late Alfred and Emma (Woldt) Holland. He was united in marriage to Mabel H. Neumann on Nov. 1, 1931 in Sebewaing. She preceded him in death on July 26, 1980. Art was employed as a mechanic for C.P. Woldt Implement Dealership in Kilmanagh for 38 years. He then was employed as a foreman for Acme Roll Forming in Sebewaing before his retirement. He was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Kilmanagh and was an elder and served in various offices in the church. He also was on the Owendale School Board for many years. Surviving are two sons, Duane Holland and his wife, Yvonne, and Don Holland and his wife, Pat, both of Sebewaing; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two sisters, Alma Sandall of Ann Arbor and Gertrude Hadeway and her husband, John, of Fairgrove; one sister-in-law, Edla Schlemmer of Sebewaing; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Willard and Walter Ertel. The funeral service will take place at 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 10, 1999, at St. John Lutheran Church in Kilmanagh. The Rev. David Lukefahr will officiate with burial in the church cemetery. Visitation is from 10 a.m to 9 p.m Saturday and 9 a.m to 1 p.m Sunday at the Dinkel-Juengel Funeral Home in Sebewaing. He will lie in state from 2 p.m. until the time of the service Sunday at the church. Memorials may be made to St. John Lutheran Church. Thelma Wilber Thelma F. Wilber, 82, of Canton, and formerly of Oakland County and Bad Axe, died Friday, Oct. 1, 1999. She was born Nov. 5, 1916 in Eveline Township. She worked assembly for the automotive industry and more recently in home care. She is survived by one daughter, Judith A. Burgess and her husband, James, Jr.; two sons, Gerald J. Wilber and his wife, Linda, and David Wilber and his wife, Judith, of Canton and formerly of Bad Axe; 10 grandchildren; and nine great- grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Earl J., and a son, Martin Anthony Wilber. A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 10, 1999, at the chapel of the L. J. Griffin Funeral Home in Canton. The Rev. Norman Naylor of the Emerson Unitarian- Universalist Church will officiate. Visitation is from 1 p.m. until the time of the service on Sunday at the funeral home. Memorials may be given to the American Heart Association. Anthony Zdrojewski Anthony Robert "Bob" Zdrojewski, 45, of Palms, died suddenly Tuesday morning, Oct. 5, 1999, at Deckerville Community Hospital of an apparent heart attack. He was born May 8, 1954 in Deckerville, the son of Anthony "Whitey" and Doris (Scott) Zdrojewski. He married Joann Schumacher on Feb. 12, 1977, at Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Ruth. He was a 1972 graduate of Deckerville High School. He was an engineer at Dott Industries of Deckerville for 27 years. He was a member of Dott Manufacturing Thursday Nite Men's Bowling League at Liberty Lanes in Sandusky. He was a member of the Michigan Snowmobile Association. He was a parishioner of St. Patrick's Church of Palms all of his life. He enjoyed family camping and snowmobiling. He is survived by his wife, Joann, of Palms; one daughter, Tracie, at home; two sons, Jeff and Craig, at home; his parents, Anthony "Whitey" and Doris Zdrojewski, of Palms; four brothers, James "Porky" Zdrojewski of Palms, Steve Zdrojewski and his wife, Sue, of Deckerville, Richard "Dick" Zdrojewski and his wife, Lana, of Port Huron, and Ronald Zdrojewski of Palms; many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brother, Michael "Mike" Zdrojewski on July 1, 1995. Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 8, 1999, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Palms. The Rev. Ronald Wagner, pastor of Sts. Peter & Paul Church of Ruth and Sr. Theresa Carlow, pastoral administrator of St. Patrick's will officiate. Burial will be in Downington Cemetery in Deckerville. There will be a Parish Scripture Service at 8 p.m. tonight by Sr. Carlow at the funeral home. Visitation is from noon to 9:30 p.m. today and 8:30 to 10 a.m. Friday at Smigielski Funeral Home in Minden City. Gertrude Blome Gertrude J. Blome, 96, of Pigeon passed away Monday, Oct. 4, 1999, at Four Seasons Healthcare Center in Bad Axe following a four-month illness. She was born in Pforzheim, Germany on March 14, 1903, the daughter of the late Albert and Katherine (Pfeffle) Kaucher. While in Germany, she worked at a jewelry factory and as a bookkeeper. In 1926, she moved to Detroit. On July 21, 1928, she was united in marriage to Gustav Blome. The couple moved to Huron County in 1933 and began farming in 1935. He preceded her in death on July 23, 1959. After 1959, Mrs. Blome returned twice to visit Germany. Mrs. Blome was a homemaker who enjoyed sewing, knitting, and crocheting, as well as gardening. She was a member of Cross Lutheran Church in Pigeon. She is survived by three children, John Blome and his wife, Shirley, of Indian River, Harold Blome of Pigeon, and Joanne Powers and her husband, Patrick, of McCordsville, Ind.; a daughter-in-law, Joan Blome of Pigeon; 17 grandchildren; 24 great grandchildren; a sister, Herta Hagel of Germany; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a son, Donald; two sisters, Emma and Elise; two brothers, Albert and Max. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 7, 1999, at Cross Lutheran Church in Pigeon with the Rev. Raymond E. Orth, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. today at the Meyersieck-Bussema Funeral Home, a Golden Rule Funeral Home, in Pigeon and from 10 a.m. until the time of the service Thursday at the church. Memorials may be made to Cross Lutheran Church Building Fund or to the American Cancer Society. Keith VanDeVoort Keith Peter VanDeVoort, 52, died Sept. 30, 1999, in Chula Vista, Calif. following a five-year illness. He was born Aug. 5, 1947 in Pigeon, the son of Evelyn C. (Diefenbach) and the late Wilbert VanDeVoort. He was a 1965 graduate from the Laker High School and served in the U.S. Navy. He was married to Barbara Lynn Gageby in Sept. 1970 in Chula Vista, Calif. Keith was employed as an aviation technician engineer at the North Island Naval Base in San Diego for several years. He was an avid dart and pool player. Surviving besides his wife, Barbara, are one daughter, Diane Perez and her husband, Art, of Chula Vista, Calif.; two granddaughters, Tori and Belle; his mother, Evelyn C. VanDeVoort of Bay Port; one sister, Sally Napieralski and her husband, Dan, of Saginaw; three brothers, Dale VanDeVoort and his wife, Elaine, of Lakeland, Fla., Terry VanDeVoort and his wife, Donna, of Caseville, Pat VanDeVoort and his wife, Karen, of Bay City; several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. A graveside service will take place at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 13, 1999, at the New Bay Port Cemetery in Bay Port. Pastor Luke Yoder will officiate. Visitation is from 4 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 12, at the Dinkel-Juengel Funeral Home in Sebewaing. Nellie M. Wright Nellie M. Wright, 78, of Cass City died Sunday, Oct. 3, 1999, in Covenant Health Care-Cooper in Saginaw. She was born March 11, 1921 in Elyria, Ohio to Carl and Minnie (Johnson) Glatz. She married George Albert Wright on June 14, 1941 in Fraser. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 5, 1999, in Kranz Funeral Home in Cass City with the Rev. David Hollander of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Caro officiating. Visitation is from 2 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. Paul DeLong Mr. Paul R. DeLong, 19, of Cass City died Thursday evening, Sept. 30, 1999, in a silo farm accident in Sanilac County. He was born Nov. 1, 1979 in Bad Axe, son of Robert DeLong and the late Laurie McRae. He was never married. He attended Cass City elementary school. He was a 1998 graduate of Ubly High School. He was a sophomore at Delta College in Elementary Education Special Education Curriculum. He was the winner of the Kevin Kerbyson Memorial Award as Grand Champion Senior Showmanship 1998, winner of many big steer showmanship awards in county fairs in Tuscola, Huron and other counties. He was a member of the Ubly High School football, baseball and basketball teams, and was a student aide in the special education classes at Ubly High School. He was a volunteer for the Special Olympics in Caro for many years. He was a member of the Cass City Livestock 4-H Club. Paul was employed by many area farmers and most recently at the Schulte Farms in Harbor Beach and as a repair technician for DeLong's Repair in Cass City. He is survived by his father, Robert, and his wife, Kathleen, of Cass City; one brother, Joseph, of Cass City; one sister, Kate, at home; his maternal grandparents, Kenneth and Laura McRae, of Ubly; his paternal grandmother, Lucile DeLong, of Cass City; many aunts and uncles. He was preceded in death by his mother, Laurie McRae; and his paternal grandfather, Donald DeLong. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 5, 1999, at St. John's Catholic Church of Ubly. The Rev. T. J. Fleming, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in the Elkland Cemetery of Cass City. Visitation will be from 2 to 9:30 p.m. today, noon to 9:30 p.m. Monday and from 8:30 to 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Zinger-Smigielski Funeral Home in Ubly. Memorials may be offered to the Special Olympics, Ubly Special Education or a charity of the donor's choice. Christian Gartner Christian Robert Gartner, 90, former resident of Bad Axe, died Thursday, Aug. 12, 1999. He is survived by a nephew, Tom Frost; and a niece, Rosemarie Woods; and several other nieces and nephews. A Christian Burial service will take place at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 5, 1999, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery in Bad Axe. Father Jack Leipert, pastor of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Bad Axe, will officiate. Arrangements are being handled by the MacAlpine Funeral Home, Bad Axe. 1
