HURON DAILY TRIBUNE, Bad Axe, Huron County, Michigan Local Obituaries Week of December 5, 1999 Frances Shaltry Frances Mary (Cashin) Shaltry, 88, of Saginaw passed away at her home after a lingering illness on Thursday, Dec. 9, 1999. She was born on Aug. 14, 1911, to the late John C. and Frances M. (Coyle) Cashin of Mt. Morris. On Feb. 9, 1934, she was united in marriage to John Laurence Shaltry at Holy Family Catholic Church in Saginaw. Laurence preceded her in death on Oct. 12, 1986. Frances is survived by five sons, Gerald L. Shaltry of Fairfield, Calif., Thomas D. Shaltry and his wife, Sherry, of Williamston, Dr. John Shaltry and his wife, Sue, of Big Rapids, Michael J. Shaltry of Sacramento, Calif., and Dennis P. Shaltry of Saginaw; five daughters, Marianne Gehring and her husband, Edward Sr., of Harbor Beach, Jacqueline F. Knudson of Belmont, Calif., Therese S. Luplow and her husband, Thomas, of Zilwaukee, Kathleen M. Gunther and her husband, Michael, of Saginaw and Susan V. Batcke and her husband, Jed, of Saginaw; locally her grandchildren include, Edward J. Gehring Jr., Constance M. Kramer and her husband, Terrance, Robert J. Gehring, William G. Gehring and his wife, Lenai, Paul R. Gehring and his wife, Tracy, Joseph R. Gehring and his wife, Rhonda, all of Harbor Beach, Jean A. Booms and her husband, Thomas, of Port Hope, and grandson Mark D. Gehring and his fiancee, Dana, of Titusville, Fla.; local great-grandchildren include, Kristin, Ryan, Jenna and Keith Kramer, Aaron, Brandon, Alyssa, Kara, Luke and Jared Gehring, all of Harbor Beach and Kyle, Trevor and Tyler Booms of Port Hope. She was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Patrica Lou; a son, Joseph R. Shaltry; a grandson, Michael J. Gehring, an infant grandson, Gunther; a brother, Donald Cashin, and a sister, Mary (Cashin) Schneider. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 14, 1999, at St. Stephen's Catholic Church in Saginaw. Entombment will be at the Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Saginaw. Joann Swackhamer Joann M. Swackhamer, 74, of Palm Harbor, Fla., died Friday, Dec. 3, 1999, at Mease Countryside Hospital in Safety Harbor, Fla. Survivors include her husband, Edward Swackhamer; a son, Edward H. Swackhamer of Holman, Wisc.; a daughter, Mary Jo Collier of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; a sister, Mary Lou Fousci of Safety Harbor, Fla.; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Naomi Lecky Naomi Pearl Barker Lecky, 76, died Tuesday, Dec. 7, 1999, at the Doylestown Health Care Center in Doylestown, Ohio, after 11 months of thoughtful and professional care at the facility. Naomi was born on July 10, 1923, in Bad Axe to George F. Barker and Violet Mae Gager Barker. She graduated from the Bad Axe High School in June 1941. On April 17, 1948, Naomi married Albert Sylvester "Pete" Lecky in a Presbyterian service in Bad Axe. For most of their years together, Naomi and Pete were residents of Royal Oak. Naomi is survived by her sister-in-law, Lucille Lecky of Doylestown, Ohio; nephew John Lecky of Akron, Ohio; friend Shirley Reeder of White Lake; friend Sylvia Valencich in Doylestown Health Care Center. A memorial service will be conducted at 7 p.m. today at the Campfield-Hickman-Collier Funeral Home in Barberton, Ohio, with Bill Stone officiating. A committal service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at the White Chapel Cemetery in Troy. Oscar Puvaloski Oscar Edward Puvalowski, 79, passed away at home on Wednesday, Dec. 8, 1999. He was born on June 17, 1920, in Harbor Beach to the late Vincent and Anna (Rumptz) Puvalowski. He married Frances Glaza on Nov. 8, 1941, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Parisville. She survives him. They were married for 58 years. He is survived by his wife, Frances; one daughter, Noreen Wazny and her husband, David, of Caro; two sons, Clarence Puvalowski of Minden City and Kenneth Puvalowski and his wife, Ruth Ann, of Minden City; 10 grandchildren, Tricia Messing and her husband, Stan, Kelly Grifka, Lori White and her husband, David, Amy Puvalowski, Linda Puvalowski, Scott Wazny and his fiancee, Nicole Davis, Tiffanee Wazny, Shelly Puvalowski, Sherry Puvalowski and Vince Puvalowski; seven great-grandchildren, Jordan Messing, Blake Messing, Macy Messing, Cody Grifka, Tyler Grifka, Joshua White and Jenna White; one sister, Blanche Cook; one brother, Aloise Puvalowski and his wife, Lottie; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Vincent and Anna Puvalowski; one brother, Raymond Puvalowski; two sisters, Lucille Grifka and Regina Puvalowski. Mass of Christian burial will take place at 11 a.m. on Saturday. Dec. 11, 1999, at St. Mary's Catholic Church. Fr. Charles Hammond will officiate with burial at St. Mary's Cemetery. A wake service will take place at 8 p.m. today at the Zinger-Smigielski Funeral Home in Ubly. Francis Jackson Francis Levi Jackson, 56, of Elkton died unexpectedly Dec. 7, 1999, at Michigan Sugar Company in Sebewaing. He was born on Feb. 26, 1943, in Erie, Pa., the son of the late Everett L. and Doris (Bingman) Jackson. Francis and Barbara Walker were married on June 26, 1999, at the Community Wesleyan Church in Elkton by the Rev. DeWeerd Smith. He is survived by his wife, Barbara; one sister, Edna Mae Mitchael and her husband, Harry, of Homestead, Fla.; three brothers, Everette Jackson of Fruitland Park, Fla., Bobby Jackson of Live Oak, Fla. and Eddie Jackson of Homestead, Fla.; one godchild, Susan Marie Klemmer; several nieces, nephews and cousins in Pennsylvania and Florida; and special friends Kinsey and Phyllis Hazard of Bad Axe. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 10, 1999, at the MacAlpine Funeral Home in Bad Axe, with the Rev. DeWeerd Smith, pastor of Community Wesleyan Church, officiating. Richard Palm Richard S. Palm, 63, formerly of Bad Axe died Tuesday, Dec. 7, 1999. He was the son of the late Joseph and Annabelle Palm and a 1954 graduate of Bad Axe High School. He also graduated from Michigan State University in 1958. Richard is survived by his son, Charles Palm and his wife, Jaclynn, of Kalamazoo; his daughter, Michelle Palm of Ashville, N.C.; a grandson, Zachary Palm; and a brother, Joseph F. Palm and his wife, Marti, of Davison. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 9, 1999, at St. Thomas Aquinas Church in East Lansing. Lulu Barton Lulu Mae Barton, 94, of Bad Axe died Tuesday, Dec. 7, 1999, at the Huron County Medical Care Facility in Bad Axe following an extended illness. She was born on Sept. 20, 1905, in Bad Axe, the daughter of Frank and Laura (Hodgson) Barton. Lulu is survived by one niece, Connie Zahm and her husband, Robert, of Bad Axe; one nephew, William Wintergerst of Chicago, Ill.; one great-niece, Andrea Zahm of Bad Axe; two great-nephews, Nicholas Wintergerst and Richard Wintergerst, both of Bad Axe; brother- in-law, Anthony Wintergerst of Caseville; several cousins. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Edna Axleson and Roxie Wintergerst and an infant brother, Harold. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 10, 1999, at the First United Methodist Church in Bad Axe with the Rev. William Wright officiating. Burial will follow at Colfax Cemetery. John MacDonald John MacDonald, 50, of Caseville and formerly of Bad Axe, died Dec. 7, 1999, at his home. He was born on Sept. 14, 1949, in Bad Axe, the son of the late John Angus and Fayetta (Fezzey) MacDonald. He was a graduate of Bad Axe High School, class of 1968. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles 3690 in Caseville for 12 years. He was employed as a bartender at the Club. John's hobbies included music, dancing and a good party. Surviving are three sisters, Faye Hasselman and her special friend, Jim, of Kinde, Brenda Brooks and her husband, Charles, of Bad Axe and Cindy Sutter and her husband, Brian, of Madison, Ohio; several nieces and nephews; one great-niece and three great- nephews. He was preceded in death by one sister, Carol Ann MacDonald. A memorial service will be conducted at 7 p.m. on Friday Dec. 10, 1999, at the Caseville Eagles Club. A memorial Eagles Ritual Service will be conducted at 7:30 p.m. Joseph Buchkowski Joseph J. Buchkowski, 72, formerly of Paris Township, passed away at his home in Westland Nov. 18, 1999, after a lengthy battle with cancer. He was born May 5, 1927, at the family farm home. Surviving are his wife, Pauline; six sisters, Gertrude Susalla Messing of Ruth, Emma Fisher of Ubly, Bernice Ignash of Port Huron, Theresa Glaza of Ruth, Marie Krozek of Ubly and Mathilda Particka of Bad Axe; one brother-in-law, Michael Miller of Filion; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Mary (Kulish) Buchkowski; one brother, Alosie, who died in infancy in 1903; and four sisters, Isabel Swartz Weisenberger in 1997, Sophia Susalla in 1973, Albena Maurer in 1988 and Josephine Miller in 1994. Carol Dondineau Carol "Jean" Dondineau, 52, of Fraser and formerly of Bad Axe, died Sunday, Dec. 5, 1999, at St. Mary's Hospital in Saginaw following complications from an automobile accident. She was born on June 2, 1947, in Bad Axe, the daughter of the late Wilfred and Dorothy (Powell) Fritz. She is survived by two sons, Harold Dondineau of Luzerne and Philip Dondineau and his wife, Darlene, of Ortonville; two daughters, Selma Wendland and her husband, Lonnie, of Kinde and Mary Gibson and her husband, Christopher, of Hanau, Germany; 12 grandchildren, Rebecca Dondineau, Nathan Dondineau, Caroline Dondineau, Jesse Dondineau, Richard Dondineau, Elizabeth Dondineau, Alexandria Wendland, Ashley Dondineau, Christopher Ault, Justin Ault, Parker Gibson and Dawson Gibson; stepmother Dorothy Fritz of Ortonville; four brothers, Wilfred Fritz and his wife, Nancy, of Burton, Marvin Fritz of Grand Rapids, Duane Fritz and his wife, Cheryl, of Lansing and Christopher Fritz of Burton; two sisters, Helen Jaworski and her husband, James, of Owendale and Wanda Ballard and her husband, Jack, of Alabama; her special friend, Ace "Benny" Blanenship of Fraser. A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 9, 1999, at the MacAlpine Funeral Home in Bad Axe with the Rev. Dolores Friedland Dolores Friedland, 69, of Port Hope passed away on Monday, Dec. 6, 1999, in Huron Memorial Hospital in Bad Axe following a short illness. She was born on June 23, 1930, in Detroit to the late Clarence and Violet (Sumara) Dietiker. On Dec. 24, 1949, she married LeRoy Friedland in Port Hope. Dolores is survived by her husband of nearly 50 years, LeRoy Friedland; one son, Michael Friedland and his wife, Darlene, of Livonia; three grandchildren, Jennifer McLaud, Jill Flett and Michael J. Friedland; two great- grandchildren, Ashley and Taylor McLaud; one brother, Leroy Dietiker of Port Hope; and one sister, Naomi Poloney of Troy. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 9, 1999, in the Ramsey Funeral Home in Harbor Beach, a Golden Rule Funeral Home, with the Rev. Henry Malone, vacancy pastor of St. John Lutheran Church, officiating. Burial will be in the Marquardt Cemetery in Port Hope. Agnes Scherret Agnes M. Scherret, 87, of Port Hope passed away Monday, Dec. 6, 1999, in Huron Memorial Hospital in Bad Axe following a long illness. She was born on Nov. 14, 1912, in Huron Township near Port Hope to the late Herman and Bertha (Kolbis) Zick. She and Frederick Scherret were married on April 23, 1932, in St. John Lutheran Church in Port Hope. He preceded her in death on Jan. 23, 1967. Agnes is survived by two sons, Frederick Scherret and his wife, Linda, of Deckerville and Elmer Scherret of Bad Axe; 12 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Emma Sawyer of Port Hope; many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Frederick; three sons, Wilbert on Aug. 10, 1993, Willett on Jan. 26, 1997, and Edwin on July 20, 1997; one grandchild, Otto in 1962; three sisters, Anna Reinke, Elsie Scherret and Minnie Pochert; three brothers, Carl, Albert and William Zick. Funeral services will at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 9, 1999, at St. John Lutheran Church in Port Hope with the Rev. Henry Malone, vacancy pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the Marquardt Cemetery. A scripture service will be conducted at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday at the Ramsey Funeral Home in Harbor Beach, a Golden Rule Funeral Home. Carl Tredup Carl W. "Charlie" Tredup, 93, died Friday, Dec. 3, 1999, at Hills & Dales Hospital in Cass City following a brief illness. He was born June 14, 1906, in Sebewaing, son of the late Louis and Pauline (Wiemer) Tredup. He was united in marriage to Wave Pitcher on July 17, 1935, in Sebewaing. She preceded him in death on Dec. 19, 1976. Surviving are one daughter, Georgene and her husband, Edward St. Pierre, of Columbiaville; five grandchildren, Troy Schroder, Jeff Schroder and his wife, Kelly, Jody McKenzie and her husband, Robert, Joseph St. Pierre and Terry St. Pierre; three great-grandchildren, Noah and Jamie McKenzie, and Brenna Schroder; several nieces and nephews; also a special friend, J.C. Pitcher of Sebewaing. He was preceded in death by five sisters, Emma Timm, Laura Beringer, Edith Dysert, Hannah Bendler and Marie Tredup; and four brothers, Ernest Tredup, John Tredup, Herman Tredup and Carl Tredup. The funeral service will take place at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 7, at the Dinkel-Juengel Funeral Home in Sebewaing. Rev. Richard Kriesch will officiate with burial in the Memorial Park Cemetery. 1
