HURON DAILY TRIBUNE, Bad Axe, Huron County, Michigan Local Obituaries Week of September 5, 1999 Kenneth Grimes Kenneth M. Grimes, Sr., 88, of LeRoy died at his home on Wednesday, Sept. 8, 1999. He was born Oct. 8, 1910 in South Bend, Ind., son of the late Lawrence Stratton and Helen Condon. Kenneth graduated from Manasha High School in Manasha, Wis. After graduation he moved to Michigan and lived in Forestville from 1977 to 1995. He married Sally Linn on Nov. 29, 1931 in Detroit. She preceded him in death in 1995. He enjoyed watching sports, fishing and reading. Kenneth is survived by one daughter, Sally Towner of Elk Rapids and one son, Kenneth M. Grimes, Jr. and his wife, Mary Louise, of Sterling Heights; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. A private memorial service will take place at a later date. Bud Chambers Alger "Bud" Chambers, 72, resident of Waterford and former resident of Bad Axe, died Sept. 7, 1999, at his home following a long illness. He was born Oct. 24, 1926, in Bad Axe. He was the son of the late Judson and Sadie (Kelly) Chambers. He was a WW II Navy veteran, serving in Guam. Mr. Alger Chambers and Miss Maudie Duggan were married Oct. 17, 1947 in Bad Axe. The couple observed their 50th anniversary in 1997. He was a retired electrician from the Chrysler Corporation. He was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church in Waterford. He was a member of the Chippers and Carvers of Waterford and a member of the Oakland County Sportsman Club. Alger loved to hunt, fish and carve. Surviving are his wife, Maudie, of Waterford; one son, David Chambers, and his wife, Rebekah, of Jerusalem, Israel; two daughters, Nanette Palmer and her husband, Fred, of Essex Junction, Vt., and Amy Crommett and her husband, Robert, of Davisburg; one grandson, Jared Palmer, of Austin, Texas; step-grandchildren, Melissa Palmer of Austin, Texas, Joseph Koassuth of Israel, and Jody Evans of California; one brother, Orval Chambers of Bad Axe. He was preceded in death by one brother, Alton Chambers. A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 11, 1999, at the Trinity United Methodist Church on 6440 Maceday Drive, near Williams Lake Road in Waterford. Memorials may be made to Trinity United Methodist Church, the Ostomy Association of Oakland, or the Cranbrook Hospice in Bloomfield Hills. Arrangements are by the Care Memorial Society. Local information was supplied by the MacAlpine Funeral Home of Bad Axe. Robert D. Knight Robert D. Knight, 84, of Sebewaing, died Thursday, Sept. 9, 1999, at the Huron County Medical Care Facility in Bad Axe. He was born April 10, 1915 in Huron County, the son of the late Edward and Adeline (Durfey) Knight. He was married to Alice Hartsell on Aug. 28, 1945, in Standish. She preceded him in death in May 1995. Robert was employed at the Michigan Milk Producers Dairy in Sebewaing for 22 years before retiring in 1971. He then moved to Germfask where he lived until moving to Sebewaing three years ago to live with his granddaughter, Lisa Nutt. He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Germfask and the V.F.W. Post No. 3060 of Germfask. He served in the U.S.Army during World War II. Surviving are three granddaughters, Lori Pommerenke and her husband, Steve, Lisa Nutt and her husband, Duane, and Paige Neumann, all of Sebewaing; seven great-grandchildren; a twin brother, David Knight and his wife, Berniece, of Caro; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Patricia Crabtree; one sister, Mildred McConkey; and one brother, Ephraim Knight. The funeral service will take place at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 11, 1999, at Grace Lutheran Church in Germfask. Burial will be in the Germfask Cemetery. Visitation is noon to 9 p.m. Friday at the Dinkel-Juengel Funeral Home in Sebewaing and noon to 2 p.m. on Saturday at the church. Memorials may be given to Grace Lutheran Church. Don "Pete" Peterson Donald James "Pete" Peterson, 62, a lifelong resident of Bad Axe died Wednesday, Sept. 8, 1999, at his home. He was born on May 6, 1937 in Bad Axe, the son of the late Sheldon and Eleanor (Casey) Peterson. Donald was employed at Carmet Company of Bad Axe for 37 years. He was the former president of the United Steel Worker Association Loca1 6311. He also was a member of the Bad Axe Moose Club. He enjoyed going to the casino and visiting with family and friends. Mr. Peterson was a medical specialist in the United States Army. He received the good conduct and marksman medals. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Bad Axe. Donald graduated from Bad Axe High School in 1955. His survivors include two daughters, Michelle Goniwiecha and her husband, Dave, of Ruth and Debbie Peterson of Ruth; two step-daughters, Annete Briolat and her husband, Bob, of Otisville and Debbie Koglin and her husband, Rod, of Rapson; a special friend, Judy Wissner of Bad Axe; two brothers, Richard Peterson and his wife, Judy, of Bad Axe and Robert Peterson and his wife, Dorreen, of Bad Axe; five grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by an infant son, Donald J. Peterson, Jr. The Funeral Scripture Service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 10, 1999, at the MacAlpine Funeral Home in Bad Axe, with Fr. Jack Leipert of Sacred Heart Catholic Church officiating. Burial will take place at Sacred Heart Cemetery. Visitation is 1 to 9 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. until the time of the service Friday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Huron Memorial Hospice. Hans Hartlieb Hans Hartlieb, 95, of Caseville, died Friday, Sept 3, 1999, at the Scheurer Hospital Long Term Care Unit in Pigeon. He was born in Wilhelmshaven, Germany on April 21, 1904, the son of Joseph and Bertha (Hinrichs) Hartlieb and immigrated to the United States in 1926. On Feb. 16, 1928, he was married to Bertha M. Tunder in Brighton. She preceded him in death on Oct. 30, 1984. Mr. Hartlieb was a baker and retired in 1966 from Awrey Bakery where he had worked for 17 years. He was lifetime member of Sport Club No. 1924 in Detroit and especially loved and was active in track and field events receiving several medals both in Germany and the United States. In 1992, he received the Thumb Track & Field Meet of Champions Friend of Youth Award. He was a member of the German American Culture Center in Detroit and attended Cross Lutheran Church in Pigeon. His survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Gunther and Shirley Hartlieb of Caseville; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Kimberly Ann Hartlieb-Hayward, and two brothers and a sister in Germany. Funeral services will be conducted at noon Saturday, Sept. 11, 1999, from the Cross Lutheran Church in Pigeon, with the Rev. Raymond E. Orth, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Caseville Township Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Meyersieck-Bussema Funeral Home in Pigeon and from 11 a.m. until the time of service Saturday at the church. Memorials may be made to the Cross Lutheran Church Building Fund. Dorothy Clancy Dorothy L. Clancy, 73, of Port Austin died Tuesday, Sept. 7, 1999, at her home following a long illness. Mrs. Clancy was born April 25, 1926 in Harbor Beach. She was the daughter of the late Michael and Frances (Soviac) Horetski. Dorothy and Harry F. Clancy were married July 6, 1979 in Owosso. Mrs. Clancy was a parishioner of St. Michael's Catholic Church in Port Austin, a graduate of the Carpenter Rural Country School and an accomplished homemaker. She enjoyed cooking, canning, visiting with her friends, her flower garden and bowling. She is survived by her husband, Harry Clancy; three sons, Michael Goretski and his wife, Bonnie, of Bad Axe, Leonard Goretski of Northville; Ronald Goretski and his wife, Kimberly of Elk Rapids; four grandchildren, Michael Goretski and his wife, Christine, David Goretski, Wendy Goretski and Len Goretski; two great- grandchildren, Kristi Lynn Goretski and Jacob Goretski; two brothers, Daniel Horetski and his wife, Marie, of Kinde, William Horetski and his wife, Wanda, of Linwood; one brother-in-law, Ben Czerwinski of Clawson; six step-daughters, Mary Andreski and her husband, Robert, of Port Austin, Barbara Gottschalk and her husband, Edward, of Ann Arbor, Sally Pollock and her husband, John, of Northville; Donna Provot and her husband, Patrick, of Concord, Ohio, Harriet Clancy of Harrison Township, Debra Clancy of Ann Arbor; one step-son, Thomas Clancy of Port Austin; 11 step-grandchildren, Frank Robles, Stephanie Robles, Dan Willette, Rory and Jeffrey Andreski, Adam and Jonathan Gottschalk, Kelly and Thomas Provot, Sean and Erin Pollock; and three step-great-grandchildren, Kaylee Robles, Cody and Casey Huval. Mrs. Clancy was preceded in death by one sister, Eleanor Czerwinski. Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 10, 1999, at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Port Austin. Fr. Michael Bell, pastor, will officiate. Burial will take place in the church cemetery. A parish wake service will be offered at 7 :30 p.m. Thursday at Gage Chapel MacAlpine Funeral Home in Kinde by Fr .Bell. Visitation is from 1 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home and from 10 a.m. until the time of the Mass on Friday at the church. Virginia Dershem Mrs. Virginia Theresa Dershem, 83, of Deckerville died Monday, Sept. 6, 1999, at Autumnwood of DeckervilIe. She was born April 21, 1916 in Detroit. She was a daughter of the late Faustyn and Mary Catherine (Reibinski) Baranski. She married Arthur Dershem on Oct. 19, 1940 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Palms. He preceded her in death in October 1945. She attended Minden City School No.2. She worked in the Detroit area. She farmed mint and vegetables with her husband until 1957. She worked for Clements Manufacturing for 25 years. She enjoyed gardening and needlework. She was a parishioner of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Palms. She was a member of the Deckerville Senior Citizens Club. She is survived by one son, Joseph D. Dershem and his wife, Darlene, of Palms; one daughter, Barbara Smith and her husband, Richard, of Edwardsburg; four grandchildren, Kimberly Fairbanks and her husband, Chris, of Southgate, Joseph B. Dershem of Palms, Cindi Disher and her husband, Patrick, of Edwardsburg; David Smith of Edwardsburg; three great-granddaughters, Delaini and Riliegh Disher and Megan Fairbanks; one sister, Helen Baranski of Palms; one brother, Bruno Baranski of Marietta, Ga.; and one sister-in- law, Stella Baranski of St. Clair Shores. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Dominic, George and Carl Baranski and one daughter, Ruth Ann. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 9, 1999, at Smigielski Funeral Home in Minden City. Sr. Theresa Carlow, pastoral administrator at St. Patrick's in Palms, will officiate. Burial will be in St. Patrick's Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 9:30 p.m. today and Thursday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service at the funeral home. Walter Gross Walter M. Gross, 51, of Essexville and formerly of the Pinnebog area, died Monday, Sept. 6, 1999, at Covenant Harrison of Saginaw from complications of lung cancer. He was born on Feb. 27, 1948, in Bad Axe to Carl and Evelyn (Champagne) Gross. He was a 1966 Laker High School graduate and attended Delta College for two years. Mr. Gross had retired from K-Mart for health reasons and had been employed at Bay Shore Realty, Caseville, a number of years. He was currently serving as assistant pastor of Rose of Sharon Ministries, Bay City. Surviving are his wife, Donna; his children, Tiffany, Trevor and Tory Gross of Bay City, Tara Manion and her husband, Brian, of Essexville and Emily at home; two step-children, Patrick McCarthy of Essexville and Amanda McCarthy at home; his parents, Carl and Evelyn Gross of Caseville; eight brothers, Carl Gross and his wife, Ann, of Middle Barton, England, John Gross of Cloverdale, Calif., Larry Gross and his wife, Sallie, of Tampa, Fla., Bob Gross and his wife, Pat, of Marysville, Md., Ron Gross and his wife, Pattie, of Harbor Beach, Willard Gross and Allen Gross and his wife, Sharon, of Caseville; and his sister Rose Marie Cregeur of Waterford, Conn. A sister, Diana Krabbe, preceded him in death. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 11, 1999, at the Champagne Funeral Chapel, Elkton. Norma Tomkinson, pastor of Rose of Sharon Ministries will officiate. There will be a praise memorial service conducted at 4 p.m. Sunday in the conference room at the Best Western Motel, 6285 Westside Saginaw Rd., Bay City. Visitation will be from 2 until 9 p.m. Friday and after 10 a.m. Saturday. Memorials may be directed to the family. Shirley Doerr Shirley Doerr, 68, of Cass City died Thursday, Sept. 2, 1999, in IHS of Michigan at Riverbend, Grand Blanc. She was born May 17, 1931 in Bad Axe to Herbert and Ada (Rader) Anderson. She married Edward Mason in March of 1956. He died Nov. 8, 1957. Shirley then married Donald Doerr on Aug. 23, 1958 in Gaylord. He died Oct. 23, 1976. Shirley was a licensed practical nurse until her children were born. She ran a thrift shop for Big Brothers & Big Sisters in Caro and retired in May of 1996. Shirley was a past member of the Hospital Auxiliary, Eastern Star of Cass City and a Lioness of Cass City. She enjoyed crossword puzzles and reading. She loved children and enjoyed raising hers and others. She is survived by her children, Cynthia Doerr Joseph and her husband, Robert, Richard Doerr and his wife, Mary, John Doerr and his wife, Barb, and Donald Doerr and his wife, Barb, all of Cass City; grandchildren, Evan and Abby Joseph, Christina, Melissa, Mason, Nicole, Brent and Joseph Doerr, Samantha Wright and Cory Hill; brother, Herbert Anderson and his wife, Dorothy, of Bad Axe; sisters-in-law, Mary Jane Peterman and her husband, Jack, of Kalamazoo, Carol Anderson of Caseville; a special son, Steven Meeker; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a son, Joseph Doerr in 1979; and brothers, Robert Wayne Anderson and James Anderson. Memorial services will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 11, 1999, in Kranz Funeral Home with the Rev. Roger Mosey of Ellington Church of the Nazarene officiating. Elmer Koenig Elmer E. Koenig, 82, of Harbor Beach passed away Friday, Sept. 3, 1999, in the Harbor Beach Community Hospital following a long illness. He was born Jan. 18, 1917 in Detroit to the late William C. and Ida (Henning) Koenig. He was in the Merchant Marines during World War II and attended the University of Detroit. He is a graduate of Lawrence Tech. He and Phyllis Schmucker were married on Aug. 2, 1952, in Detroit. Elmer was a retired employee of the Detroit Edison Co. in Detroit. He retired in 1978 after 43 years of employment. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Harbor Beach and the American Legion Post 197 of Harbor Beach. He is survived by his wife, Phyllis Koenig, of Harbor Beach; two daughters, Janice Kuschner and her husband, Andrew, of Leavenworth, Kan., and Carol Dempster of Southfield; one son, Gary Koenig and his wife, Diane, of Highland; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Private funeral services will be conducted on Sunday, Sept. 5, 1999, at the Ramsey Funeral Home, a Golden Rule Funeral Home, in Harbor Beach with the Rev. Mark Girardin, pastor, Zion Lutheran Church, officiating. Burial will follow at Rock Falls Cemetery in Harbor Beach. Memorials may be made to Zion Lutheran Church Building Fund or to the donor's choice of charity. Warner Lyle Pickering W. L. "Tim" Pickering, 78, of Bad Axe died unexpectedly Friday afternoon, Sept. 3, 1999, at his home. He was born Oct. 3, 1920 in Bad Axe, the son of the late William and Elsie Mae (Gordon) Pickering. He was a graduate of Bay City Central. He later joined the Navy and was stationed in San Diego, Calif. He was a third-class torpedo man. Mr. Warner Lyle "Tim" Pickering and Miss Gladys Longuski were married May 16, 1953 at St. Columbkille Catholic Church in Sheridan. Tim was a builder by profession. He constructed additions, motels, churches and even 17 homes on Beech Street in Bad Axe. He put his handy work all over. He liked to play guitar. He even played in a band with Barney Schubring and Bob Quinn on WLEW radio station. He also loved animals, was an avid sports fan and enjoyed politics. He is survived by his wife, Gladys, of Bad Axe; two sons, James Warren Pickering, of Royal Oak, and John Paul Pickering, of Bad Axe; three daughters, Mary Jo Pickering, of Bad Axe, Beverly Anne Pickering, of Pontiac and Catherine B. Pickering, of Bad Axe; one brother, William Pickering and his wife, Fayne, of Florida. He was preceded in death by one son, William Bruno Pickering; and one brother, Robert "Rex" Pickering. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 7, 1999, at St. Columbkille Catholic Church in Sheridan with Fr. T. J. Fleming, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Monday and from 9 until 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the MacAlpine Funeral Home in Bad Axe. Memorials may be offered to the family. Mary Ellen Stacer The world will be a little less bright because Mary Ellen Stacer died at Covenant Health Care Hospital in Saginaw on Thursday, Sept. 2, 1999. She was born on Sept. 29, 1919 in Bad Axe, the daughter of the late George and Christina (McIntyre) Smith. Mary Ellen was a 1937 graduate of Bad Axe High School. Miss Mary Ellen Smith and Mr. Walter Stacer were married Feb. 5, 1941, by the Rev. Robarts in the United Methodist Parsonage in Bad Axe. Walter Stacer preceded Mary Ellen in death on Dec. 28, 1995. Mary Ellen was the matriarch of the family. She was a member of the Senior Citizen's Club and the First United Methodist Church of Bad Axe. She enjoyed bowling, bingo and her grandchildren. She is survived by one daughter, Karen Damen and her husband, Victor, of Elkton; two grandchildren, Danielle Damen of Clawson and Stacer Damen of Elkton; one sister, Donelda Carriveau and her husband, Joe, of Kinde; two sisters-in-law, Rose Smith of Filion and Mae Smith of Bad Axe; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by one sister, Marjorie Novak; and three brothers, Arthur, George and Ted Smith. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 6, 1999 from the MacAlpine Funeral Home in Bad Axe. The Rev. William Wright and the Rev. Pete Crawford will co-officiate. Burial will follow Tuesday morning at Colfax Township Cemetery. Visitation is from 1 to 9 p.m. today and from 11 a.m. until the time of service on Monday at the funeral home.
