HURON DAILY TRIBUNE, Bad Axe, Huron County, Michigan Local Obituaries Week of October 10, 1999 Julia Forshee Julia Ellen Forshee, 94, of Owendale died Thursday, Oct. 14, 1999, at Tendercare Nursing Home in Cass City following an extended illness. She was born Sept. 11, 1905 in Grant Township. She was the daughter of the late Herbert and Cynthia Jane (Keillor) Huff. Miss Julia Huff and Mr. Glen Forshee were married on Dec. 18, 1924 in Pontiac. He preceded her in death on Sept. 3, 1965. Julia was a graduate of Elkton High School and attended Central Michigan University. She taught at the Williamson School in Grant Township. She was a member of the Owendale Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Julia liked to write cards and mail them to her friends. Surviving are six nieces and nephews, Arlene Anderson and her husband, Robert, of Owendale, Doris Ross and her husband, Gerald, of Caseville, Eva Huff of Port Huron, Zelma Pringle of Port Huron, Florence May and Alma Jean, both of California. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Hiram H. Huff and Herbert Earl Huff, and one sister, Gertrude Huff. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 16, 1999, at MacAlpine Funeral Home in Bad Axe with Elder Ellis J. Gardner officiating. Burial will take place at Grant Township Cemetery. Visitation is from 10 a.m. until the time of the service Saturday at the funeral home. Raymond Bruderick Raymond W. Bruderick, 72, of Elkton died Tuesday, Oct. 12, 1999, at his home. He was born Feb. 5, 1927 in Minden City, son of the late Raymond and Frances (Regentin) Bruderick. He graduated from Minden City High School in 1945 and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. On Aug. 7, 1954, he and Lois Holcomb were united in marriage at the Elkton Methodist Church. Ray worked as a route driver for Vern's Vending for several years and later took a position at the Elkton Co-op Farm Produce. He retired in 1989 after 18 years. In his spare time, he was a gunsmith and did precision stock finishing, serving customers throughout eastern Michigan. He attended the Elkton United Methodist Church, was an avid deer and turkey hunter and was a life member of the National Rifle Association. Surviving are his wife, Lois; three children, Diane McIlhargie and her husband, Brad, of CasevilIe, Gayle Reynolds and her husband, Fred, of Elkton, and David Bruderick and his wife, Robin, of DeLand, Fla.; eight grandchildren, Sarah and Jennifer Wright, Abigail McIlhargie, Natalie, Erin and Melanie Reynolds, Kelly Bruderick and Tommy Savage; two sisters, Lois Parker and her husband, Lloyd, of Port Huron and Shirley Lehman and her husband, Donald, of Bridgeport; two brothers, Jim Bruderick and his wife, Anita, and Terry Bruderick and his wife, Sally, both of Minden City; mother-in-law, Genevieve Holcomb of Elkton; 13 nieces and nephews; and 17 grand-nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a niece, Suzanne Parker. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 16, 1999, at the Elkton United Methodist Church. The Rev. Pete Crawford, pastor, will officiate with burial in Riverside Cemetery in Elkton. Visitation is from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday and from 2 to 9 p.m. Friday at Champagne Funeral Chapel in Elkton and after 10 a.m. Saturday at the church. Memorials may be made to Huron Memorial Hospice, Elkton United Methodist Church or the charity of the donor's choice. Grace Carpenter Grace R. Carpenter, 77, died Sunday morning, Oct. 10, 1999, at her home following a lengthy illness. She was born June 13, 1922 near Bay Port, the daughter of the late Levi and Adina (Bueschlen) Beck. She was united in marriage to Milford Carpenter on Feb. 28, 1942 in Kilmanagh. Grace was a member of the Kilmanagh United Methodist Church and served as a secretary. She was an avid bowler and loved gospel and bluegrass music. Surviving besides her husband, Milford, are one daughter, Joan Tyree, and her husband, Vernon, of Fenton; one son, Donald Carpenter, and his wife, Jean, of Unionville; five grandchildren, Clark and Jeffrey Harner, and Joshua, Jessica and Jacob Carpenter; and two great-grandchildren, Adina and Adam. She was preceded in death by one infant daughter, Peggy Jo Carpenter. The funeral service took place at 11 a.m. today, Tuesday, Oct. 12, 1999, at Dinkel-Juengel Funeral Home in Sebewaing. The Rev. Clarence W. VanConant officiated with burial in the Memorial Park Cemetery. Kurt Ballman Kurt Carl Ballman, 85, of Port Hope, passed away Monday evening, Oct. 11, 1999, at his home following several months of illness. His family was in attendance. He was born in Powiersen, Germany, on July 4, 1914 to the late John and Emma (Hein) Ballman. In 1923, he came to Detroit with his family where he completed the eighth grade and worked several jobs before making General Motors his career. From 1952 until he retired in 1975, he was a maintenance engineer at the Warren Tech Center. In 1931, he married Marion Clara Peabody who preceded him in death on Sept. 1, 1983. After his retirement, they lived near Port Austin during the summers and in New Port Richey, Fla. during the winters. On Aug. 9, 1986, he married Leona (Fluegge) Peppel in Port Hope. They lived near Port Hope and in New Port Richey. He was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Port Hope, the Grindstone-Port Hope Sportsman's Club and the General Motors Retirement Club in Florida. He enjoyed golfing and keeping busy at the Port Hope farm homestead. He is survived by his wife, Leona, of Port Hope; three children, Kurt W. Ballman and his wife, Marlene, of Big Rapids, Gary Ballman and his wife, Judi, of Denver and Karen Parent and her husband, Dennis, of Mt. Clemens; seven grandchildren, Steve and Debra Walsh, Kurt J. Ballman, Keith Ballman, Chris Ballman, John and Debbie Ballman, Todd and Cheryl Ballman and Alan and Donna Parent; seven great-grandchildren, Brian, Jason, Ryan, Sarah, Katherine, Katie and Sarah; two stepsons, Donald Peppel of Texas and Dale Peppel of Rochester; four step- grandchildren, Julie, Justin, Adam and Jason; three step-great-grandchildren, Kevin, Le'rin and Chrystine; one brother, Harry Ballman of Orange, Calif.; one sister, Ruth Erni of Seal Beach, Calif.; one brother-in-law, Eric Burton, of Newport Beach, Calif.; many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two brothers, George and William Ballman; two sisters, Lydia Burton and Meta Hafler; and by a grandson, Scott Ballman. Funeral services will be at noon on Friday, Oct. 15, 1999, at St. John Lutheran Church in Port Hope with the Rev. Albert Bahr, former pastor of St. John, officiating. Interment will take place at White Chapel Cemetery in Troy. A scripture service will be conducted at 8 p.m. on Thursday at Ramsey Funeral Home, a Golden Rule Funeral Home, in Harbor Beach by the Rev. Henry Malone, vacancy pastor, of Palms. Visitation is from 7 to 9 p.m. today and 1 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home and from 11 a.m. until the time of the service Friday at the church. Memorials may be given to St. John Lutheran Church, Friends for Life Hospice or the charity of the donor's choice. Catherine Quinn Catherine E. Quinn, 81, of Argyle, died Saturday, Oct. 9, 1999, in her home. She was born June 17, 1918 in Argyle to Linus N. and Gladys (Doerr) Peters. She married Owen M. Quinn on Aug. 1, 1936 in Flint. He died on Jan. 6, 1965. Mrs. Quinn retired from Walbro after 32 years. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Argyle. She enjoyed quilting and baking. Her greatest joy was being with her children and grandchildren. Catherine is survived by her son, Owen "Sonny" Quinn, Jr. and his wife, Rosie, of Cass City; daughters, Rosalie Lenk and her husband, Don, of Deckerville, Joan McNulty and her husband, Louis, of Riley, and Linda Yost and her husband, Tony, of Cass City; grandchildren, Steve Nichols, Robin Brooks and her husband, Ron, Dan Rutkowski and his wife, Betty, Jacquelyn Yost, Jerry Quinn, Cathy Fisher and her husband, Dave, Diana Stomach, Jeff Lenk; great-grandchildren, Dakota, Quinton and Hunter Rutkowski, Christopher Nichols, Michala Brooks, Jake and Jenna Quinn, Crystal and Kenny Heilig, Katie Bittner; stepsister, Dorothy McCarty and her husband, Pat, of Argyle; many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; stepmother, Clara Peters; son, Richard Quinn; grandson, Tony Yost; and brother, Carl Peters. Arrangements are by Kranz Funeral Home in Cass City. Bertha Tufts Bertha E. Tufts, 95, of Grand Rapids, passed away on Saturday, Oct. 9, 1999. She was born on Feb. 7, 1904 in Orleans (which is now Belding), the daughter of Duran and May Delphine Johnson. She moved to Grand Rapids in 1922 and was married there on June 2, 1928 to her beloved husband, Walter M. Tufts, who passed away in 1975. She is survived by her son, Robert Tufts of Port Sanilac; three grandchildren, Kathy Smith of Mason, Anji Spence of Pleasant Ridge and Brandon Tufts of Royal Oak; a special niece, Helen Larson and her husband, Len, of Wyoming; and many nieces, nephews, and friends. She was preceded in death by brothers, Elon, Ira, Willard, Harry and Forrest; sisters, Blanche, Mamie, Elsie and Luella; and by many nieces, nephews and dear special friends. Funeral services will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 12, 1999, in the Metcalf and Jonkhoff Funeral Home chapel in Grand Rapids. The Rev. Dr. Philip E. Johnson will officiate. Interment is in River Ridge Cemetery in Belding. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. Memorials may be given to First Park Congregational Church of Grand Rapids or the charity of the donor's choice. Barbara Bingham Barbara R. Bingham, 76, of Pigeon, passed away Sunday morning, Oct. 10, 1999, in Caseville after a lingering illness. Mrs. Bingham was born on Sept. 19, 1923 in Highland Park, the daughter of the late Herbert and Dorothy (Fielding) Randall. On Nov. 23, 1943, she was united in marriage to Lawrence L. Bingham in Berkley. In 1975, she and her husband retired to Sand Point. He preceded her in death in 1977. Before moving to Pigeon, Mrs. Bingham worked at the Yarncraft Shop and the Bargain Box Store of the Junior League, both in Birmingham. She enjoyed knitting and sewing. Her survivors include three children, Nancy J. Folk of Pigeon, Randall Bingham and his wife, Janine, of Harbor Springs and Pamela J. Bingham of Pigeon; four grandchildren, Christopher Folk and his wife, Christine, of Fairfax, Va., and Cole, Bradley and John Bingham, all of Harbor Springs; two nieces and a nephew. She was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Randall, in 1958. A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 13, 1999, at St. John Episcopal Church, "The Little Church in the Woods," Sand Point. The Rev. Franklin Houghton will officiate. Cremation has taken place with private committal services to be conducted at Franklin Cemetery in Franklin. Visitation is from 1 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Meyersieck-Bussema Funeral Home, a Golden Rule Funeral Home, in Pigeon and from 10 a.m. until the time of the service Wednesday at the church. Ian Chopp Ian Yvonne "Bonnie" Chopp, 63, of Sandusky died Friday, Oct. 8, 1999, at Austin Street House after a long illness. Memorial services will be conducted at 5 p.m. today, Sunday, Oct. 10, 1999, at Kranz Funeral Home in Cass City with the Rev. David Hollander of St. Paul Lutheran Church officiating. Interment is in Novesta Township Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Good Shepherd Lutheran Church of Cass City. George Baranic George Jude Baranic, 87, of Bad Axe and formerly of Gagetown and Lexington, died Friday morning, Oct. 8, 1999, at the Huron County Medical Care Facility in Bad Axe following a short illness. He was born May 11, 1912 in Cleveland, Ohio, the son of the late John and Anna (Jusko) Baranic. George attended a rural school and also Vassar High School. Mr. George Baranic and Miss Catherine Cheek were married Nov. 29, 1939 in Reese. She preceded him in death Oct. 31, 1994. George worked out west in the gold mines. The rest of his working years were spent farming in the Gagetown area. He enjoyed playing euchre and bingo. He loved to deer hunt, fish and play sports like golf and bowling. Surviving are three brothers, Joe Baranic and his wife, Alice, of Caro, Frank Baranic and his wife, JoAnn, of Apache Junction, Ariz., and Andrew Baranic and his wife, Blanche, of Saginaw; two sisters, Anne Ellis of Cass City and Elizabeth Nagy of East Tawas; 49 nephews and nieces including Howard Ellis and his wife, Sharon, of Bad Axe, and John Baranic, Jr. of Ubly, and several great-nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by four brothers, John, Michael, Steve and William Baranic and one half-sister, Mary Sieman. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 11, 1999, at the MacAlpine Funeral Home, Bad Axe, with Sr. Joan Maher, pastoral administrator of St. Agatha's Catholic Church, Gagetown. Burial will follow at St. Elizabeth's Cemetery, Reese. A parish wake service will be conducted at 7 p.m. today at the funeral home. Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. until the time of the service at 11 a.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to St. Agatha's Catholic Church in Gagetown or to the Bad Axe Meal Site. George Essenmacher Mr. George H. Essenmacher, 86, of Harbor Beach died Saturday morning, Oct. 9, 1999, at Mercy Hospital of Port Huron on his 62nd wedding anniversary. He was born March 6, 1913 in Detroit, son of the late Joseph and Virginia (Warner) Essenmacher. He married Agnes J. Koss on Oct. 9, 1937, at Our Lady of Lake Huron Catholic Church in Harbor Beach. He was a graduate of the country school. He worked at Ford Motor Co. for 10 years. He then moved to the Thumb and worked for Huron Milling Co. and Hercules and farmed until his retirement in 1978. Mr. Essenmacher was a member of St. Anthony's Parish in Helena for 50 years and a former member of the Harbor Beach Senior Citizens. Mr. Essenmacher enjoyed his grandchildren, playing cards, farming and having a hot dog at Norm's. He also enjoyed traveling with family and friends. He was a Senior Homecoming King in Harbor Beach, and he worked on the Civil Conservation Corps Program. He is survived by his wife, Agnes J. Essenmacher, of Harbor Beach; five sons, John Essenmacher and his wife, Nina, of Armada, George Essenmacher, Jr. and his wife, Josephine, of Birch Run, Jim Essenmacher and his wife, Viola, of lmlay City, Bruce Essenmacher and his wife, Linda, of Harbor Beach, Steve Essenmacher and his wife, Sandy, of Mt. Clemens; four daughters, Julianna Messing and her husband, Gordon, of Carsonville, Virginia Sadro of Bad Axe; Janet Lemanski and her husband, Raymond, of Harbor Beach, Shirley Essenmacher of Shelby Township; 37 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Warren Essenmacher of Wyandotte, Richard Essenmacher and his wife, Ann, of Bad Axe, Lloyd Essenmacher and his wife, Marilyn, of Harbor Beach. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Mary, at birth; his parents; three brothers, Donald, Earl and Maurice Essenmacher; his son-in-law, Ralph Sadro; and one great-granddaughter, Veronica Koeing. Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 12, 1999, at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Helena. The Rev. Charles Hammond, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery. There will be a parish wake service at 8 p.m. this evening at the Zinger-Smigielski Funeral Home in Ubly. A rosary by the Men's Club was conducted Sunday evening. Visitation will be from 1 to 9:30 p.m. today and from 8:30 to 10 a.m. Tuesday in the funeral home. Helen Kern Helen A. Kern, 78, of Vacaville, Calif., and formerly of Sebewaing, died Saturday, Oct. 2, 1999. A memorial committal service will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 13, 1999, at the Assembly of God Cemetery in Sebewaing. Arrangements are being handled by Meyersieck- Bussema Funeral Home, a Golden Rule Funeral Home, in Pigeon. 1
