HURON DAILY TRIBUNE, Bad Axe, Huron County, Michigan Obituaries for the week of October 24, 1999 Ruth Ann Van Erp Mrs. Ruth Ann Van Erp, 60, of Henrietta, New York, died Wednesday, Oct. 27, 1999 in Sparrow Hospital of Lansing. She was born July 10, 1939 in Ubly, the daughter of the late David and Edanna (Walker) Sweeney. She married Albert Van Erp on June 23, 1962 at St. Columbkille Catholic Church of Sheridan. She was a graduate of Ubly High School in 1957 and a graduate of Central Michigan University in 1961 with a degree in Home and Careers. She was a beloved wife, wonderful mother, grandmother and sister. She was an inspiration to all who knew her involvement with the Rush-Henrietta School District, the 4-H Cooperative Extension and the Cancer Society. She was a seamstress for many weddings and special occasions. She taught many things to many people. She was a parishioner of Good Shepherd Catholic Church of Henrietta, New York. She is survived by her husband, Albert, of Henrietta, NY; two sons, Christopher Van Erp and his wife, Renee, of Mechanicsville, MD, and Corey Van Erp of Windermere, FL; two daughters, Laurie Cvetic and her husband, John, of Avon, Ohio, Lisa Van Erp of Henrietta, NY; three grandchildren, Meghan, Christopher and Alaina Cvetic; three brothers, Frank Sweeney and his wife, Patricia, of Lansing, Paul Sweeney and his wife, Angie, of Tawas City, and David Sweeney of Ubly; and several nieces and nephews. The Mass of Christian burial will be conducted at 10 a.m. Monday, Nov. 1, 1999 at St. Columbkille Catholic Church of Sheridan. The Rev. T. J. Fleming, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 9:30 p.m. Sunday and from 8 to 9 a.m. Monday at Zinger-Smigielski Funeral Home of Ubly. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Socity. Frances Nicholson Frances G. Nicholson, 85, of Harbor Beach passed away Thursday morning, Oct. 28, 1999 in the Evangelical Home in Port Huron following a short illness. She was born on Sept. 4, 1914 in Port Austin, the daughter of the late Joseph and Frances (May) Horiski. She and Edward Polohaske were married in 1935 and he preceded her in death in July 6, 1988. She and James Nicholson were married on Sept. 5, 1992 in Harbor Beach at Our Lady of Lake Huron Church. They resided in the Harbor House Senior Complex in Harbor Beach. She is survived by her husband, James Nicholson of Harbor Beach; two sons, Ernest Polohaske of Phoenix, AZ and Ralph Polohaske of Georgia; two daughters, Virginia Jias and her husband, Ted, of Bad Axe and Sandra Polohaske of Ferndale; five grandchildren, Steven Jias and his wife, Elaine, Ron, Brian, Dennis Jias and his wife, Melissa, and Debbie Jias; two great-grandchildren, Brenden and Taylor Jias. She was preceded in death by four brothers, Albert, Paul, Leo and Raymond Horiski and five sisters, Cecilia Miller, Ida Lemanski, Florence Marlette, Agnes Cornett and Bertha Joslin. Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 1, 1999 in Our Lady of Lake Huron Catholic Church, Harbor Beach, with the Rev. James Smith James Norman Smith, 75, of Port Austin and formerly of Columbiaville in Lapeer County, died Thursday morning, Oct. 28, 1999, at Harbor Beach Community Hospital following a battle with cancer. He was born on Aug. 25, 1924 in Mundy Township near Flint. Mr. James Smith and Miss Kathleen Garnett were married Oct. 19, 1985 in Imlay City. They just celebrated their 14th wedding anniversary. James managed a gas station in Lapeer and most recently was a bathtub truck driver. He enjoyed collecting owls, fishing, deer hunting and was an avid football, baseball and wrestling fan. Surviving are his wife, Kathleen, of Port Austin; one stepdaughter, Louise Green of Port Huron; one step-granddaughter, Britney Green; one sister, Kathleen Lafnear and her husband, Gerald, of Prescott; and one half-sister, Eleanor Haight, of Kalamazoo. A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 1, 1999, at the MacAlpine Funeral Home Gage Chapel in Kinde with the Rev. Donald Stroud, pastor of the Filion Nazarene Church, officiating. Visitation is from 1 p.m. until the time of the service on Monday at the funeral home. Sandra Foster Sandra Lynn Filion Foster, 51, a respected community college administrator, died on Thursday, Oct. 21, 1999 in her Riverside, CA home. She was born on Dec. 30, 1947 in Detroit, the daughter of James H. and Leona (Thick) Filion. Ms. Filion Foster lived the last seven years in California where she served as vice president of planning and development for Riverside Community College at the Norco Campus and the Morino Campus. Prior to moving to California, she served as associate vice chancellor for planning and development at the City Colleges of Chicago. While overseeing strategic planning for the eight-college district, she developed the Career Preparation Initiative and the nationally recognized "Productive America" project. She was also a member of the Executive Board of the National Council on Occupational Education. She was a member of the Laker High School Class of 1965. She earned her bachelors and masters degrees from Michigan State University and her doctoral degree in public policy analysis-education from the University of Illinois at Chicago. She was a member of the Alpha Lamda Delta Society. She is remembered as a talented educator, effective consultant and supportive friend of many. Outside of her work, she loved to read, travel and attend the theater. She had a special fondness for "Zoe", the cat she and her daughter raised from a kitten. She is survived by one daughter, Suzanne Filion Foster of Claremont, CA; parents, Jim and Leona Filion of Filion, MI; two brothers, Donald Filion and his wife, Nancy, of Filion, MI and David Filion and his wife, Mary, of Saginaw, MI; two nieces, Tracie Beatty and Jennifer Filion; one nephew, David Filion. She was preceded in death by one brother, Tommy Filion. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 29, 1999 at the Kaufman Funeral Home in Bad Axe. Officiating will be the Rev. Memorials may be made to the Sandra Filion Foster Scholarship Fund in care of the Lake High School. Doris Liken Doris F. Liken, 75, died unexpectedly Monday, Oct. 25, 1999 at her home. She was born Aug. 25, 1924 in Kilmanagh, the daughter of the late Henry J. J. and Maria M. (Ziede) Marotzke. She was married to Arthur F. Liken on Oct. 7, 1949 in Sebewaing, MI. He preceded her in death on March 8, 1991. Doris was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church and the Mary Martha Guild. She was also very active in and secretary of the Sebewaing V.F.W.Auxiliary. Surviving are two sisters, Frances Barnes of Ann Arbor and Carol Jean Allard of Newport News, VA; three sisters-in-law, Marie Liken and Florence Liken, both of Sebewaing, MI, and Esther Thumme of Elkton, MI; one brother-in-law, Carl Liken of Sebewaing, MI; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by one sister, Anna Titsworth. The funeral service will take place at 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 28, 1999, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Sebewaing, MI. The Rev. Martin J. Hagenow will officiate with burial in the church cemetery. Visitation is from 2 to 9 p.m. today at the Dinkel-Juengel Funeral Home. She will lie in state at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of the service at the church. Memorials may be made to the Immanuel Lutheran Church. Edna Irrer Edna E. Irrer, 79, of Sebewaing, MI died Wednesday morning, Oct. 27, 1999 at Bay Medical Center in Bay City following a ten-month illness. She was born on Dec. 30, 1919 in Bach, MI, the daughter of the late Carl F. and Erna B. (Bachman) Nitz. She was married to Raymond G. Hofmeister on May 2, 1942 in Bach. He preceded her in death on Nov. 5, 1969. She then married Clarence O. Irrer on Jan. 6, 1978. He died Jan. 9, 1989. Edna was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Sebewaing. Surviving are one daughter, Diane Fritz and her husband, Robert, of Unionville, MI; two sons, Donald Hofmeister and his wife, Brenda, of Sebewaing and James Hofmeister and his wife, Kathy, of Unionville; seven grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by one brother, Waldo Nitz; one sister, Luella Lutz; and one great-grandson, Dawson Hartman. The funeral service will take place at 11 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 29, 1999 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Sebewaing. The Rev. Martin J. Hagenow will officiate with burial in the church cemetery. Memorials may be given to the American Cancer Society or Immanuel Lutheran Church. Adele Banker Adele H. Banker, 87, of Harbor Beach went home to live with the Lord on Sunday, Oct. 24, 1999. She was born on Sept. 12, 1912 in Harbor Beach, the daughter of the late Anthony and Flora (Mausolf) Schroeder. She lived her entire life in Harbor Beach. She married Frank Banker on Jan. 11, 1933. He preceded her in death on April 28, 1976. Mrs. Banker was a member of Our Lady of Lake Huron Catholic Church. She was a Red Cross volunteer in her adult years. Her life's love was music. She loved to play the piano and was in the Barney Schubring Band in the 1940's, 1950's and 1960's. She played the piano while her husband played the drums. They were well-known around Huron and Sanilac Counties for their music. She would also entertain the residents of the long-term care unit at Harbor Beach Community Hospital with her music. She is survived by her sons, Douglas Banker and his wife, Rose, of Sandusky, MI, Larry Banker and his wife, Alberta, of Harbor Beach and Wayne Banker and his wife, Pat, of Riverside, CA; three daughters, Marlene Janderwski of Winter Haven, FL, Janet Phelps and her husband, Herbert, of Howell, MI, and Kathleen Banker of Harbor Beach; three sisters, Ruth Schott of Harbor Beach, Violet O'Neil of Harbor Beach and Doris Bader and her husband, William, of Norwalk, OH; one sister-in-law, Betty Schroeder of Harbor Beach; 26 grandchildren; and 45 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by four brothers, Arthur, Jerome, Leland and Robert Schroeder; one sister, Beatrice Plaut and one great-grandson. Clancy, 75, of Hume Township near Port Austin, MI died Oct. 25, 1999 at the Huron County Medical Care Facility in Bad Axe, MI. She was born on April 28, 1924 in Owosso, MI, the daughter of the late Venus and Ethel (Ottinger) Brashaw. She married Cecil F. Clancy on June 25, 1946 at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Port Austin. He preceded her in death on Dec. 28, 1996. A life-long resident of Port Crescent, MI, Margaret enjoyed playing Bingo, watching birds and visiting with family and friends. She also loved cooking and baking. She was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church where she volunteered as a Eucharistic minister. Surviving are five sons, Michael Clancy and his wife, Ruth Ann, of Warren, Dennis Clancy and his wife, Bonnie, of Armada, Pat Clancy and his wife, Marge, of Armada, Timothy Clancy and his wife, Marlene, of Bay City and Brian Clancy of Kinde; four daughters, Colleen Salemi and her husband, Jerry, of Arlington Heights, IL, Kathy Ruth and her husband, Arnie, of Fostoria, MI, Kelly Woods of Harbor Beach and Marlene Klee and her husband, Allen, of Harbor Beach; 22 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one brother, Albert Brashaw; and three sisters, Betty Quick, Eva Hubbard and Catherine Schultz. Margaret was preceded in death by two brothers, William and John Brashaw; and a half-brother, George Ottinger. Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. today and 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Charles Peters Charles E. "Pete" Peters, 91, of Decker died Sunday, Oct. 24, 1999, in his home. He was born on Dec. 22, 1907 in Argyle to Jacob and Mary (Behr) Peters. Charles served in the Merchant Marines and took part in World War II. He was a member of the Maritime Union. He spent most of his life sailing. For more than 40 years he served as a ship's engineer. After retirement, Charles enjoyed rebuilding tractors. Charles is survived by his daughter, Gloria Johnson and her husband, Edward, of Clarkston; grandchildren, Curtis Johnson and his wife, Gloria, of Miami, Fla., Cheryl Betzing and her husband, Peter, of Clarkston, Brent Johnson and his wife, Pam, of Clarkston, Gary Johnson of Clarkston and Jeffrey Johnson and his wife, Angela, of Tullahoma, Tenn.; 12 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by brothers, Emerson, Bill, Tony, Emmett, Freeman and Murell Peters; and sister, Maude Palmer. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 28, 1999, in Kranz Funeral Home in Cass City with the Rev. George Harmon of Calvary Bible Church in Caro officiating. Memorials may be made to the charity of the donor's choice. Nathan Wilde Nathan C. Wilde, 22, of Bad Axe passed away on Monday, Oct. 25, 1999. He was born on April 12, 1977, the son of Charles and Carole (Anderson) Wilde. Nathan was a member of the Bad Axe High School Class of 1996. He worked for his father's business Charley Wilde Auto Body. He was previously employed at Thumb Tool & Engineering in Bad Axe. He loved animals and was an avid fan of Mopars, Four-by-Fours and the like. He is survived by his parents, Charles and Carole Wilde of Bad Axe; one sister, Michelle Wilde, of Charleston, S. C.; several aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Herbert and Mabel Anderson of Harbor Beach and paternal grandparents, Alvin and LaVerne Wilde of Bad Axe. Irene Butterwick Irene Ann Butterwick, 86, of Harbor Beach passed away on Saturday, Oct. 23, 1999, in Harbor Beach. She was born on Sept. 5, 1913 in Port Austin to the late Joseph and Catherine (Goretski) Polowski. On Sept. 27, 1941, she married David Butterwick at St. Michael's Church in Port Austin. She was a homemaker and a member of Our Lady of Lake Huron Church in Harbor Beach. She was a member of the Holy Rosary Sodality of Port Austin and active in the Harbor Beach Senior Diners. Irene is survived by a daughter, Carol Paukstis of Flint; two brothers, Stanley Polowski of Grindstone and Alan Polowski of Cottonwood, Ariz.; one granddaughter and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, David Butterwick; three sisters, Eleanor Stinson, Bernice Polowski and Frieda Gorney; and three brothers, Chas Polowski, Paul Polowski and Robert Polowski. Dast, 72, of Pigeon passed away on Saturday, Oct. 23, 1999, at Covenant Hospital in Saginaw. She was born in Winsor Township on Jan. 28, 1927, the daughter of teacher Leo Luedtke Sr. and Elizabeth (Hinz) Luedtke. On June 1, 1947, she was united in marriage to Donald Dast at St. John's Lutheran Church in Berne. Mrs. Dast was a homemaker and a faithful, lifelong member of St. John's Lutheran Church, where she sang in the choir for more than 50 years. She was also a member of Townliners Extension group. Mrs. Dast is survived by her husband of more than 52 years, Donald; two sons, Dennis Dast of Saginaw and Douglas Dast and his wife, Shirley, of Bay City; two daughters, Margo von Daggenhausen, and her husband, Lothar, of Flint and Wendy Terwilliger and her husband, Ronald, of Pigeon; eight grandchildren, Jennifer, Christopher and Stephanie Dast; Heidi, Megan and Stacy von Daggenhausen; and Brandon and Jason Terwilliger; a brother, Arthur Luedtke and his wife, Alice, of Pigeon; a sister-in-law, Marguerite Luedtke of Pigeon; and nieces, nephews and cousins. Dot Schubring Dot Leotine Schubring, 78, of Port Hope passed away on Sunday, Oct. 23, 1999, in Beaverton. She was born July 21, 1921 in Port Hope to the late Edward and Pauline (Lawitzke) Woolford. On Oct. 11, 1940, she married Edwin Schubring in Port Austin. She was a homemaker and a lifetime member in the American Veterans Auxiliary No. 115. She also was active in the Lutheran Women's Missionary League. Dot is survived by a son, Larry Schubring and his wife, Phyllis, of Swartz Creek; one daughter, Carolyn Jock and her husband, Delbert, of Beaverton; seven grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; one sister, Pauline Sieman-Messing and her husband, Bernard, of Minden City; two sisters-in-law, Ester Jane Woolford of Filion and Marian Woolford of Florida; and one brother-in-law, Jack W. Smith of Port Hope. She was preceded in death by her husband, Edwin Schubring; three brothers, Edward Woolford, Scott Woolford and Walter Woolford; and by one sister, Caroline Smith. Amelia Bustamante Amelia "Dell" Bustamante, 90, of Alpena, formerly of Cass City, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 28, 1999, at home. Born Amelia Thomaszewski on Oct. 24, 1908 in Manistee, she married Joseph Bustamante. He preceded her in death in 1960. She was a member of the Garden Club and Doll Club. She is survived by two sons, Anthony and his wife, Cecile, of Sterling Heights, and Michael and his wife, Nancy, of Sterling Heights; two daughters, Mary (Mrs. Earl) Sageman of Elkton and Barbara (Mrs. Ed) Retherford of Alpena; a daughter-in-law, Rosemary Bustamante; 32 grandchildren; and 39 great-grandchildren. Preceding her in death in 1997 was a son, Joseph. Arrangements were handled by Bannan Funeral Home. A memorial Mass took place Oct. 1, 1999, at SS. Cyril and Methodius in Sterling Heights. Interment was at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Southfield. Gertrude Knoblock Gertrude M. Knoblock, 90, of Port Austin died Saturday, Oct. 23, 1999, at Huron Memorial Hospital in Bad Axe. She was born on March 27, 1909 in Port Austin, the daughter of the late Michael and Mary (Zimpkoski) Sosnoski. She and Edwin Knoblock were married on Feb. 24, 1930 in St. Michael's Catholic Church in Port Austin. He preceded her in death on July 6, 1995. Gertrude was a member of St. Michael's and a member of the Holy Rosary Sodality. She enjoyed cooking and baking and was an avid gardener. Her family was her greatest joy. She is survived by eight daughters, Florence Yaroch and her husband, Lawrence, of Illinois, Lorraine Kelterborn and her husband, David, Lillian Dolan, Irene Pettit and her husband, Irvin, and Venice Clancy and her husband, Gene, all of Port Austin, Betty Jane Hertel, Karen Gilbreath and her husband, Jack, and Linda Burger and her husband, Paul, all of Ann Arbor; six sons, Edwin Knoblock and his wife, Patricia, and Eldon Knoblock, all of Port Austin, Kenneth Knoblock and his wife, Belle, of Lapeer, Daniel Knoblock of White Lake, Donald Knoblock and his wife, Marilou, of Kinde, and Gary Knoblock and his wife, Beth, of Port Austin; 36 grandchildren; 48 great- grandchildren; two sisters, Agnes Baranski and her husband, John, and Helen Ignash, all of Port Austin; two brothers, Harold Sosnoski and his wife, Dolly, of Port Austin, Raymond Sosnoski and his wife, Gustavia, of Bad Axe; three sisters-in-law, Florence Sosnoski of Warren, Mary Sosnoski of Port Austin and Vera Sosnoski of Kinde. She was preceded in death by one grandson, John Knoblock; one sister, Irene Koroleski; and three brothers, Edwin, Sylvester and Stanley. Mass of the Resurrection will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 26, 1999, at St. Michael's Catholic Church with burial in the church cemetery. A Rosary will be led by the Holy Rosary Sodality at 7 p.m. today and there will be a parish scripture service at 7:30 p.m. today. Visitation is from 2 to 9 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Knoblock Funeral Home in Kinde. Gordon Lackie Gordon H. Lackie, Jr., 72, of North Street, died Friday, Oct. 22, 1999, at home. He was born March 31, 1927 in Detroit. Gordon worked for the Detroit Edison Co. for 39 years. He was a veteran of WW II, serving in the Navy in the Pacific. He belonged to the VFW Post and the American Legion in Harbor Beach and the Masonic Lodge #62 of Marine City. Gordon was active in the Little League and Babe Ruth in Algonac, both as a coach and league president and he was the past president of the local Lions Clubs in Algonac and Harbor Beach. He was a former member of the Harbor Beach City Council as Mayor Pro Tem and Acting Mayor. He is survived by his wife, Alice; son, Gordon H. Lackie, III and his wife, Betty, of Harbor Beach; daughters, Barbara L. LeGault and her husband, Gene, of Harbor Beach, Beth Ann Bergman of Phoenix, Ariz.; grandchildren, Shane, Brandon, Brett, Craig, Lauren and Kara; stepchildren, Charles Moak and his wife, Julie, of Marysville, Linda Lipa of Port Huron, Cathy Cassady and her husband, Tom, of Fort Gratiot and Tom Emig and his wife, Teri, of Marine City; step- grandchildren, Sue, Donald, Christina, Craig, Hillary, Amanda, Ashley, Kerstyn, Lindsey, Max, Jim, Bethany and Maryia. He was preceded in death by a son, David J. Lackie. There will be no visitation. A memorial service will take place at a later date. Memorials may be made to the Algonac Little League or the Harbor Beach AYSO. Arrangements are being handled by L. C. Friederichs & Sons Funeral Home, St. Clair. 1
