HURON DAILY TRIBUNE, Bad Axe, Michigan Local Obituaries Week of January 2, 2000 Anthony Walker Anthony S. Walker, 29, of Manistee and formerly of Caro, died unexpectedly Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2000. Funeral Services will be conducted at 4 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 9, 2000, at Kranz Funeral Home in Cass City. Interment will be at 11 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 10, 2000, in Almer Township Cemetery in Caro. Nellie Brown Nellie Alston Brown, 91, of Memphis, Tenn., died of heart failure Sunday, Jan. 2, 2000, at Primacy Health Care. She is survived by one daughter, Nancy S. Maiden of Germantown; three sons, Robert F. Brown of Fayetteville, Ark., William F. Brown of Bad Axe and Gerald B. Brown of Atlanta; a brother, Fritz Alston of Ozark, Ark.; 10 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. Graveside services were conducted Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2000, in Memorial Park. Louis Gottschalk, Jr. Louis August Gottschalk, Jr., 58, of Bad Axe passed away Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2000, at his home after fighting a courageous, two-year battle with prostate cancer. Cancer may have won the fight, but God was the real victor. Surviving besides his wife and daughter are his mother, Marjorie Young and her husband, Milton, of Elkton; three brothers, Ronald Gottschalk and his wife, Harriet, of St. Augustine, Fla., Ralph Gottschalk and his wife, Bonnie, of Bad Axe and Sam Gottschalk and his wife, Sue, of Elkton; one sister, Gloria LeJeune and her husband, William, Sr., of Bad Axe; brothers-in-law Richard Dean and his wife, Darlene, Mark Dean and his wife, Cindy, and Mike Dean, all of Cape Coral, Fla.; sisters-in-law Roslyn Sozio of Cape Coral, Fla., and Lana Knight and her husband, Wayne, of Frankfort; several nieces and nephews; and several great-nieces and great- nephews. The celebration of his life will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 8, 2000, at the Elkton United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Pete Crawford, pastor, officiating. Interment will be at Riverside Cemetery, Elkton. Louis McCarthy Louis G. McCarthy, 83, of Oak Beach died Wednesday morning, Jan. 5, 2000, at Scheurer Hospital after suffering an apparent heart attack. Surviving are his wife, Sarah; his son, Louis McCarthy and his wife, Chris, of Mud Creek; two daughters, Lois McCarthy of Las Vegas, Nev., and Claudia Fournier of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; five grandchildren, Patrick, Erinn, Alison, Amanda and Eric; three brothers, Richard McCarthy and his wife, Rita, of Clearwater, Fla., Bill McCarthy and his wife, Shirley, of Houston, Texas, and Patrick McCarthy and his wife, Pat, of California; two sisters, Dorothy Chittenden of Sebastian, Fla., and Betty Lenhardt of Roseville. A funeral mass will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 10, 2000, at St. Roch Catholic Church, Caseville. The Rev. Fr. Dennis Kucharczyk, pastor, will officiate with burial in the church cemetery. Thelma Meissner Thelma L. Meissner, 51, of Caseville died at her home Wednesday morning, Jan. 5, 2000, after suffering what appeared to be a heart attack. Surviving are her husband, Warren; two daughters, Bridgette Meissner of Jacksonville, Fla., and Stacey Meissner of Caseville and her fiancee, Shawn Diebel; her granddaughter, Brittany; her mother, Helen King; two brothers, Gene King and his wife, Connie, of El Paso, Texas, and Bill King and his wife, Laura, of Oak Beach; three sisters, Evelyn Schoenfeldt of Owendale and her friend, Roger Fritz; Joyce Muntz and her husband, Bill, of Bad Axe and Irene Schelke and her husband, Dave, of Harbor Beach. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 8, 2000, at Champagne Funeral Chapel, Caseville. The Rev. Michael Quayle, pastor of the Caseville United Methodist Church, will officiate with burial in the Caseville Township Cemetery. John Collis John J. "Jack" Collis, 80, of Caseville died Tuesday afternoon, Dec. 21, 1999, at Courtney Manor, Bad Axe. A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 8, 2000, at the Champagne Funeral Chapel, Caseville. Interment will be in the Caseville Township Cemetery. Murl LaFave Murl E. LaFave, 87, of Owendale passed away Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2000, at Huron Memorial Hospital near Bad Axe following a brief illness. His survivors include his wife, Agatha, to whom he was married for over 56 years; their children, Marsha Potter of Grand Rapids, Dennis LaFave and his wife, Cheryl, of Wheaton, Ill., Lynette Martin and her husband, Paul, of Flushing and Kathy Berkenpas of Grand Rapids; four grandchildren, Jared and Stephanie LaFave, Brooke Weatherhead and Adam Berkenpas; three brothers, Frank LaFave and his wife, Dorothy, of Bad Axe, Paul LaFave and his wife, Donna, of Gagetown and Ted LaFave of Caro; three sisters, Betty Bryant of Birmingham, Catherine Rick and her husband, George, of Florida and Ruth Russell of Grand Rapids; and several nieces and nephews. A funeral mass will be offered at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 8, 2000, from St. Francis Borgia Catholic Church, Pigeon. The Rev. Fr. Martin Schuette Martin Frederick Schuette, 75, of Pigeon passed away Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2000, at his home on the family farm in Oliver Township. He is survived by his wife, Ruth; children, Patricia Ann Shaffer and her husband, William, of Nashville, Tenn., Janice Schuette of Ann Arbor and Mary L. Caister and her husband, Randall, of Grass Lake; two grandchildren, Laura Shaffer and Matthew Caister; a brother, Adolph Schuette and his wife, Gertrude, of Pigeon; a sister, Dorothea Schuette of Pigeon; a brother-in-law, Louis Depping and his wife, Patricia, of Texas; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 8, 2000, at Cross Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Raymond Orth, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery in Winsor Township. Alvin Gwisdalla Mr. Alvin B. Gwisdalla, 66, of Ubly and formerly of Utica, died Thursday morning, Dec. 23, 1999, in Haslett. He is survived by one son, Douglas Gwisdalla and his wife, Dawn, of Lake Orion; three daughters, Catherine Wosik and her husband, Kenneth, of Utica, Nancy Bloodworth and her husband, Christopher, of Utica, and Kimberley Goodrich and her husband, Glenn, of Utica; six grandchildren, Kenneth Wosik, Jr., Allen Wosik, Christopher Bloodworth Jr., Andrea Bloodworth, Amanda Gwisdalla and Nicholas Gwisdalla; one brother, Cass Gwisdalla and his wife, Mary, of Shelby; and one sister, Celestine Blankenship of St. Clair Shores. Mass of Resurrection was conducted on Tuesday, Dec. 28, 1999, at St. Mary's Catholic Church of Parisville. The Rev. Ronald Wagner, pastor of SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church of Ruth, officiated. Burial was in St. Mary's Cemetery with graveside military services by Thumb Veteran's Organization No. 1. Lavern Chiotti Lavern J. Chiotti, 81, of Elkton died Saturday, Jan. 1, 2000, at Huron Memorial Hospital in Bad Axe after a short bout with cancer. Surviving are two daughters, Carol Chiotti of Pigeon, and Jenny Botterbusch and her husband, Ron, of Montgomery, Ala.; son, John Chiotti and his wife, Donna, of St. Paul, Minn.; grandchildren, Juli Snyder and her husband, Ben, and Micah Chiotti, all of St. Paul; and a sister, Gertrude. A memorial mass will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2000, at St. Francis Borgia Catholic Church in Pigeon with the Rev. Fr. Barney Janowicz officiating. Ida Dressler Ida M. Dressler, 75, of Sebewaing died Friday, Dec. 31, 1999, in her home. Ida is survived by her children, Judy Bollstetter and her husband, Don, Larry Dressler and his wife, Lois, and David Dressler and his wife, Debby, all of Sebewaing; seven grandchildren, Tracy Herman and her husband, Mike, Gina Taylor and her husband, Lucas, Ryan Neumann, Eric Dressler, Joel Dressler, Joshua Dressler and Dana Dressler; four great-grandchildren, Michael Herman, Madison Herman, Aaron Taylor and Gavin Taylor; one brother, Floyd Rulason and his wife, Rose Marie, of Owosso; one sister, Martha Rose Thume of Bay City; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. today, Monday, Jan. 3, 2000, in St. Peter Lutheran Church in Bach, with the Rev. Ernest Wendt officiating. George King George W. King, Sr., 87, of Cass City died Friday, Dec. 31, 1999, in his home. George is survived by his children, George W. King, Jr., and his wife, Phyllis, of Cass City, Bette Lou Hunt and her husband, Calvin, of Ubly, Glen L. King and his wife, Janet, of Auburn, Jerry King and his wife, Bev, of Bridgeport and James L. King of Cass City; 15 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; a brother, William King of Lexington; and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services were conducted on Sunday, Jan. 2, 2000, in Kranz Funeral Home, Cass City, with Chuck Emmert of Novesta Church of Christ officiating. Interment was in Elkland Township Cemetery, Cass City. Claude Marries Claude Lee Marries, 77, of Caseville died Saturday, Jan. 1, 2000, at Bay Medical Center, Bay City. Lee is survived by his wife, Ella; a son, Terry Marries and his wife, Becky, of Rochester Hills; daughters Patty Bedard and her husband, Mark, of Troy and Chris Wilder and her husband, Dave, of Rochester Hills; grandchildren, Robert Bedard, David Marries and Jonathan Bedard; brothers, Bill Marries and his wife, JoAnn, and Joe Marries, all of Santee, Calif., and Bob Marries of Belen, N.M.; and several nieces and nephews. Patti Ann May Mrs. Patti Ann May, 39, passed away on Thursday, Dec. 30, 1999, in the University of Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor after a brief illness. She is also survived by her twin children, Casey and Tyler; her mother, Iva Brown of Pigeon; two brothers, Mick Brown and his wife, Joyce, of Bad Axe and Robert Brown of Pigeon; sister, Sandy McLean and her husband, Randy, of Pigeon; her parents-in-law, Bob and Kathy May of Bay City; four sisters-in-law and two brothers-in-law, Pam May, Lynn and Wally Church, LeeAnn and Doug Grappin and Bobby May; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will take place at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2000, at First United Methodist Church at 4790 Gratiot Road in Saginaw with the Rev. Dr. Haldon D. Ferris and the Rev. Nutt, 67, of Bad Axe passed away on Friday, Dec. 31, 1999, at Huron Memorial Hospital following an extended illness. She is survived by four daughters, Teri Hintz and her husband, Michael, of Champaign, Ill., Lynn Rowe and her fiancee, Steve Milligan, of Novi, Diana Gray of Antioch, Tenn., and Lori Krug and her husband, George, of Bad Axe; two stepdaughters, Donna Steinman and her husband, Bill, of Bad Axe, and Marva Nutt of Bad Axe; two stepsons, Marvin Nutt and his wife, Elizabeth, of Royal Oak and Michael Nutt of California; and seven grandchildren, A.J. Rowe of Novi, Kristin Hintz of Champaign, Ill., Shari, Traci, Eric and Scott Krug of Bad Axe, and Brittani Light of Bad Axe. Gale Priemer Gale A. Priemer, 60, of Harbor Beach passed away at her home on Sunday, Jan. 2, 2000, following a long illness. Surviving are her husband, Ben Priemer of Harbor Beach; three children, Anne Sheppard and her husband, Chris, of Rochester Hills, Susan Boyd and her husband, Dr. Brian Boyd, of Casco, and Steven Priemer and his wife, Ronnett,of Columbus Township; her mother, Frances Farmer of Ft. Burial will be in the Rock Falls Cemetery. Sylvester Lamke Sylvester Lamke, 82, of Ubly died Sunday evening, Jan. 2, 2000, at his residence. He is survived by his wife, Jean, of Ubly; one son, Roger Lamke and his wife, Melody, of Davison; four daughters, Mildred "Millie" Michalski and her fiancee, George Gosdzinski, of Ruth, Ann Marie Frost and her fiancee, Ken, of Sebewaing, Darlene Lawson and her husband, Bill, of Elkton, and Darlene "Dee" Dekoski and her husband, Scott, of Sterling Heights; four stepchildren, Mary Greyerbiehl and her husband, George, of Bad Axe, Rose Respondek and her husband, Gary, of Bad Axe, Chuck McKichan and his wife, Kandi, of Bad Axe, and Doug McKichan of Ubly; 10 grandchildren; nine step-grandchildren; one great-grandchild; two step-great-grandchildren; and one brother, Ted Lamke and his wife, Irene, of Parisville. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Anabell Read Anabell Read, 77, of Cass City, died on Friday, Dec. 31, 1999, in Hills & Dales General Hospital. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. today in Kranz Funeral Home in Cass City with the Rev. David Mercer, pastor of Deford Community Church, officiating.
